Matt Corby is an Australian icon. I think one of our best artists and possibly one of the best world wide. His range of vocals, his song writing, his instrumental talent and ability to play countless instruments. I’ve seen him live a few times and he performs with no shoes on and has to stand more than a metre away from the microphone during songs like this because his voice is so loud and powerful. He is astonishing. You should give his Triple J cover of “Chains” a listen too and his original track “Monday”.
I gave the biggest smile when you said "He's got everything, hasn't he? The agility, control, technique, the tone. What is there left to do?". You had no idea what was coming! Also, LOVE that you're reacting to Australian artists. We have some very talented singers down here!
I love it when people discover Australian artists. I believe their voices & styles often reflect Australian culture with its diversity and infancy in style. Not necessarily going against the grain of modern styles but also not really fully matching up either. Which I think is the reason a lot of these songs area years old but would still get a current audience and following if they had the same backing as those overseas
Totally agree mate. To add to that we have our own way of doing things down under and some of our music is very 'funky' in non-mainstream ways. Matt is super traditional, but completely unique... which is kinda the aussie way.
Matt had all the cheat codes. It's not fair he's not been recognised internationally. Unfortunately most AUS artists don't play well with the sharks that run the game.
I was lucky enough to live in the same area as Matt post Australian Idol and he used to play as the house band at a local pub nearby. Saw him turn from a 15 year old kid with a fringe. Into the talent he is today and not with raw talent. But with hard work and commitment. I used to wonder to myself "Can you imagine being one of the people who used to go to Sin-é when Jeff Buckley would play" i kind of feel like i know how they felt. Can you imagine if he had of actually won Australian Idol. The world probably never would have got this song.
Matt is the reluctant superstar, just writing and playing what matters to Matt. His live performances are so much greater than his studio stuff. He is the master of looping to boot.
"That's a tornado of talent!" - 😂😂 Love that description and sums up Matt very aptly. Shoutout to Wayne for the request and thank you Nina for giving Matt the appreciation he deserves and hopefully a whole new audience with your great reaction and insight. ❤️
yep!! I remember the first time i heard him sing. He was 14 years old at a family reunion in a country NSW (Australia) town. He sang a few songs while the rest of the very large extended family ate dinner, in a large hall. He wanted to practice singing in front of a large crowd. I had never heard my entire extended family silent before, but we were all stunned at the quality of the singing and playing. One guitar, one voice and his sister as backing vocals. Pretty much the same reaction as you in this video. Since that JJJ performance, the one in this video, he has actually gotten so much better. His voice is stronger, he is more experienced, and there are no words to describe his creativity and musical talent. If he wasnt family he would still be my favourite artist. I can only suggest that if you have any opportunity to see him live, move heaven and earth to do so. What is scary is that he is still so young. Remember Madonna when she first started to what she is now? Santana ? Michael Jackson? Springsteen? Elvis? U2? Bob Dylan, Prince. I know there are many many more I havent mentioned that deserve to be but the point is, whoever they are, what were they at the beginning compared to their greatest performance? Now imagine what this guy is going to be like in the future.
Same as the original comment you read! It's been years since I've seen this and always come back to it! Him doing the cover of Chains by Tina arena is phenomenal, also!
At age 16, Matt Corby auditioned for the 5th season of Australian Idol in 2007 where he finished as runner-up! I'm in Texas, USA and I'm probably one of the few Americans that actually got to see Australian Idol, I always downloaded the episodes with Bit-Torrent at the time. I loved the show and I really liked Matt a lot, he was my favorite and what a talent. I'm really glad he's still around and in the business doing what he does best! Thanks for posting this video Nina, a very pleasant surprise indeed.
Every Friday morning, we here in Australia are lucky enough to get 2 songs from a touring artist/band. Our national radio station Triple J host’s a live performance in their studios. The artist/band perform one of their own songs and then they do what’s called “like a version”. The artist/band will have chosen another song from anyone else and give us their version of said song. Gems are so often created Triple J create and sell the top tracks on an album every year called “Like a Version”.
I've been to 2 of his shows in London in 2018, literally my favorite experiences ever! Both times! ♥️ I'm glad you liked him, his songs have so much meaning behind them.. they got me through some shitty times :)
I just stumbled upon this video and first thing I see is pug pillows in the background so you get an instant follower lol my pug Ted is one today!!! And Matt Corby is an absolute treasure
Thanks Nina. He's an insanely talented Australian artist. Can't wait to hear your reaction to The Teskey Brothers. Btw your eye make-up looks beautiful. :) Hugs from Aus
Meanwhile, us Australians are confused why everyone is reacting to a 10yr old Like a Version. Triple J gor the win. That last bit: "Engaging Jimmy Barnes Mode", lol
Watch the full video with intro. When you know the story of the song, it brings clarity to the emotion and power. It’s utterly genuine. Same reaction by everyone who hears it - stunned into silence 😂
If you haven't found it already, you must watch the balconytv version. Best by far. Literally played on a balcony with the low sound of city traffic in the background. No studio acoustic there.
Ive seen him do this song so many times now and it still gives me chills and raises the hairs on the back of my neck like its the first listen, absolutely brilliant
I laughed out loud at “Well he’s just a tornado of talent”! Equally as someone who’s heard this recording well over a hundred times, I was waiting your reaction at that moment where he just unleashed everything.
Great reaction, Tom and Alex(the DJ's) were quite lucky to be in the same room as this performance, though this segment is a weekly occurance and there have been some amazing performances over the years. This is a standout one though.
So glad you enjoyed this. We’re very proud we have talent like Matt in Australia. He’s awesome. If you’re looking for more, listen to Untitled, Resolution and Runaway. They’re all amazing original tracks of Matt. Thanks for the vid
I'm 22. When I was like 12/13 I used to replay this song on my phone like every single day. I think I must've heard it on the radio one day, or tv, I can't remember. It's quite a depressing yet expressive song and I connected to it emotively. I felt "seen" because I was very depressive back then in a way that felt very isolating. Today was my first time searching it up to see the face behind the voice. I didn't expect him to be so young. He's truly very in-tune with his voice. I was just watching you and saying to myself "You're in for a surprise" 😂 Loved this video reaction. God bless you in Jesus name.
When describing all the positive attributes of this performance and his voice, how hard was it to stop yourself adding 'and he's super freaking hot too'?
Wow I absolutely loved this. Matt Corby is one of my fav artists, his music gives me goosebumps. This was a great video! He is impeccable isn't he?? Do you help people tap into that talent as a vocal coach??
He wrote and sings this with many emotions of anger at himself, hurt, guilt and regret. He made a big boo boo by wrecking a friendship with his best friend because he slept with his mates gf.
I pretty much never comment on videos. I've only recently started watching reaction videos to things (my first one was Snarky Puppy's Lingus about 3 months ago)... and you're the best reviewer/reacter/reactor (what do you call yourself?) by far.
Matt was treated really poorly by Australia has talent's staff and coaches, also the media really messed him up. At one point he was told behind scenes he had no future in mainstream music. The kid was 16 and came runner up in the fifth season, 2007. He stopped music for a few years after that until the burn got so hard to ignore he started writing and recording again. Thank god he did because he is an absolutely beautiful person inside and out and the music he creates is up there with the best! He also spent years doing concerts for people in their backyards for birthdays and other parties purely because he is an absolute legend!
A tornado of talent? I like that one, consider it stolen, I'll be using that. To answer your question, yes, I was blown away by this performance, stumbled across it some years back. If you haven't already, check out Uncle Jed's version, it's a little different but mighty good too.
Absolutely love this song and you're reaction. I want to introduce you to one of the two greatest singers to come out of Australia he has been performing and releasing albums for 50 year's. The song is Stone Cold by Jimmy Barnes and Joe Bonamassa. Joe plays the guitar and is American Jimmy Barnes sings and is from Australia. I will subscribe if you react to this song.
