The song was written after he betrayed his best friend “brother” by sleeping with his girl. It’s about the loss of the friendship. He touches on the subject briefly before the performance, if you can find a longer version of this video he talks about it.
I mean he’s never confirmed that but that is our best guess based on the comments he’s provided. All we know is that he did something messed up to a good mate of his- when he was 16. He didn’t lose the friendship though.

I was lucky enough to be a regular Patron at the cove after Matt left idol. He was basically the house band. Its one of my fave memories was the few times I got to see him live before he blew up
Thought you'd like this Charlie. Matt is kind of the Aussie Ren (or, more accurately, Ren is like the British Matt 😜). Matt loves contrast and to BUILD. It's emotionally draining to listen to sometimes because you get so invested and don't realise it until the song's over. This guy is a genius and always watch him live. I believe this calling sound may have been influenced by the time Matt spent in outback Australia - he has a strong interest in indigenous music and sounds, which often derive from sounds in nature. As for the lyrics all we know is that Matt did something “really stupid” to a friend when he was 16 and he experienced a lot of shame and guilt afterwards. Many have interpreted this as cheating in the sexual sense of the word, but this is just conjecture. Possibly did happen but not confirmed.
That calling sound also reminds me of the “coooeee” we used to use on our property to find each other while moving stock. Although Matt’s sounds a lot better 😂✌🏼
Doesn't appeal to me at all. I saw him live last weekend at the gold coast and it didn't appeal to me. The huge crowd obviously enjoyed the free show. Not on my playlists.
