Alright in a serious note: You are the best content creator vor unclean vocals and analyzis on youtube yet. There may be some like Mary Z that do vocal analysis but strangely once it comes to a quick demonstration it sounds nothing like what they are analyzing. You take care of many aspects, not only the distortion but a lot on mouth shapes, pronunciation etc. I really trust in what you are saying and even these videos already helped me to change up my technique a little. Cant wait until I can take lessons from you (once i have the money for a rehearsal room to practice in). Keep up the good work man! oh and id be interested in the vocals of alex teyen

Thanks so much! I try to analyze only things that I can personally demonstrate and, if I don't fully have it figured out, I try to be transparent about that. And thank you so much for the kind words, I'm glad I've been able to help! Mary Z is a solid coach, although I don't know her personally and haven't talked with her, her videos are pretty spot on for vocal fry. One reason it might sound different is the amount of space she has in her chest and neck for the resonance to roll around.

Honestly, shadow of intent is easily one of my favorite bands. Thanks to Jared dines, and Austin dickey. 😂 They did a breakdown video back in 2019 with the sickest breakdowns, and this song was in the video. Been hooked ever since. Ben Duerr is a FXCKING MONSTROUS vocalist! Also, this breakdown is easily TOP 5 for me.

Seriously loving the level of detail in your descriptions of specific techniques and that you can give real examples and show what's going on with such ease. I would really love to hear what you have to say about Inferi's vocals on the track Behold the Bearer of Light. Lots of highs with sparse lows sprinkled in so it would be some nice contrast to the first few videos focusing a lot on lows Keep it up, man!

I'm not sure if he's been mentioned, but personally I would love to see someone do a breakdown of Dave Hunt's vocals in Anaal Nathrakh. The man is insane. Something like "Depravity Favors the Bold" or "On Being A Slave" off The Whole of Law, or "Obscene As Cancer" or "New Bethlehem/Mass Death Futures" off A New Kind of Horror would be amazing.

Video happened to pop in my feed and I'm not disappointed! Great content and actually helped me get some articulation I'd been missing for years. One suggestion going forward, though, is to run your audio through an equalizer as the difference in sound levels between your talking and vocals had me on my volume like a teeter-totter. I've been doing unclean vocals about 6 years now, and Ben's vocals have got to be my most favorite to learn and imitate. Learning his technique has taught me to more comfortably do gutturals and lows in general. Honestly if anyone is wanting to get some disgusting lows but still sounding clear then this is the band to learn it from.

Couple things: You're the man, so informative without being insufferably know-it-ally, which is a definite thing with vocal coaches; Also, just an observation, a big trick with getting the pig squeal out for me was mouth shape, particularly making a dramatic "E" when the tongue hits the roof of the mouth to get the right overtone for that noise. As you mentioned, it isn't technically a pitch or a note, but a vibration, which that mouth shapes allows for me. Keep it up, man!

Don't normally comment on RU-vid videos, but man, you are a huge wellspring of knowledge on metal vocals. I've only been doing them for like two years so I've a long way to go, but these reaction videos have been amazing starting points for not only technique but writing as well. I can see myself buying a few one-on-one lessons from you :) I do have problems running out of breath :[

I fell out of doing metal vocals for a few years and lost the technicality with most of it. Its this new wave of deathcore bands like Shrine of Malice, Shadow of Intent, and Slaughter to Prevail that have really motivated me to start getting back into and get onto their level.

I am, but only on our most recent release (Glioblastoma). Everything else was Tony. I've never heard White Noise or Beyond Deviation but I'll check it out!

@@baguette6302 It seems like whistle tones are growing in popularity pretty quickly. I'd never heard them and then in the last, like, three months i feel like I hear them all the time. Its a cool sound for sure.

Very nice overview, I enjoy the way you go through a detail each different vocal piece and show us how they perform them, very intuitive and sheds light on stuff we don't know much about. Shadow of Intent has a new album called Melancholy, which came out not too long ago, and I would definitely enjoy an overview on some of the vocals from that, a couple songs to look at would be Malediction, and Barren and Breathless Macrocosm, or Embracing Nocturnal Damnation.

Wow! This has helped me so much! You should check out Traitors (down-tempo/ deathcore) because Tyler has been incorporating a new vocal style in songs like "Ruthless Hate" that I just can't figure out!
