Yeah, but Tom has said that the scream he did on the studio recording of AoD, was by complete luck/accident, and he has NEVER been able to recreate it since, not even close. Total fluke, but man, what an amazing screech it was!!!! Iconic for sure!!!

I suspect it wasn’t a pre-roll, but just Kerry playing the opening riff as they were walking on. Slayer was never big on any theatrical bs so just walking on and playing was the norm for them. Angel of Death might have been a better Slayer recommendation for vocal range. Even just for that scream in the beginning... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BYz3G5CKAD8.html

Never in a million years would I have expected a vocal coach to react to Slayer, wow. I say that as a big Slayer fan (they are my other favourite band of all time, sharing the top spot with Iron Maiden). Tom's amazing intensity and ability to sustain that through a whole show was amazing, but I never thought of him as being hugely technical. Try "Raining Blood" sometime for epic levels of intensity, or "Dead Skin Mask" for something...mellow. By Slayer standards at least. (it's also a great song about a real life serial killer, Ed Gein)
@thenecrosanct4906
@thenecrosanct4906 3 года назад
That was my thought exactly. I saw this and thought: "Wow! Slayer. I wonder what Ken will make of this." As you say, it isn't peak technicality from a singer's point of view, though it does require good technique, of course. I guess it's evident from the fact he didn't comment a whole lot on the singing technique. Still cool that he gave them a listen and shared his professional perspective.

Most of the time the Marshall stacks are empty props for show. There is usually only one or two cabinets that are actually being used. Sometimes even different amp rigs are used that are hiding behind the wall of Marshalls and are mic'd facing the backstage area. Or even the guitars just going direct through effects etc. and direct into the mixing board ...all the while have the wall of amp stacks for show. BUT there are some bands that will go through several amp cabinets of their amp wall

This is an old video, and someone may have already said this but... The South of Heaven intro sends shivers down my spine every time. Whether they play it straight after another mid set, or play it from off stage (actually playing it or from a tape) as they walk on to open the gig or back on after they've just swapped out their guitars for ones that don't need tuning or whether it's just on a youtube video. Standing in a theatre with the lights down hearing those notes ring out in the darkness anticipating the beginning of awesomeness is the best but every single time, shivers down my spine. It's as close as I get to a religious experience. There's nothing else quite like it and even if they're playing a mid-afternoon slot at a festival it still works. Slayer were the best. After I saw them for the last time I walked back to my tent in floods of tears feeling genuinely bereaved.

I’d love to see you react to the band Six Feet Under and the live version of Feasting on the Blood of the Insane!

If you're a band like Slayer, you can pull off that "underwhelming" entrance.

About volume and "huge" sound accoustically for extreme vocals: it depends on the person and technique used. Some people cup the mic to get more compression and volume, some rely on amplification more, some dont. I am not knowledgeable enough to be able to explain technical differences but I can tell you that personally, when I was in training back in the day doing extreme vocals I was very loud. We had a band rehearsal without the drummer one time so we just used small amps in a bandmates bedroom and i did vocals without any mic and amplification. I was almost too loud for the like 30-40-50-whatever watts practice amplifiers tuned to high gain settings.

if possible check out live stuff from their early years. Or even studio videos.

As someone who used to sing in metal bands when I was younger, my experience was contrary to what most of the vocal coaches seem to suggest when I hear them comment on various metal screams. In my experience doing this style of vocal regularly, my throat got used to it and the more I did it the easier it was. It wasn't doing damage, I could still use clean vocals whenever I wanted with no breaks or cracking. If I try to scream along with these songs now, it will give me a sore throat in very little time and make it much more difficult to sing clean afterwards. It's not because I've forgotten whatever technique I was using, I still produce the sound in exactly the same way, it's just that my vocal folds are not adapted to singing like this. I also suspect that having not maintained the adaptation, it would be very difficult to get it back later in life. I haven't tried, so I can't be sure, but I suspect, the body adapts more easily when younger and with regular use, it's easy to maintain that adaptation.

The familiarity probably comes from the flattened 5th in the chord progression. This was once called diablous in musica due to it's ominous sounds, and it goes back to Black Sabbath.
