Vocal Coach Reacts To Adam Lambert - Mad World - American Idol - Ken Tamplin
How did Adam Lambert NOT win American Idol?
Adam has been singing since he was a child and became heavily involved with theater and choir. He went on to sing for a tour cruise and performed in light opera in Orange County, California.
At 21, he was signed with a manager and cast in a European tour of Hair and continued to work in theatre productions and as a session musician until he was cast on American Idol.
After finishing as runner-up on the show, his career catapulted. His debut album climbed to number 3 in the US Billboard Top 200 and his next two albums also finished in the top 5.
And NOW Adam sings for Queen!
It just goes to show you that no matter what rejection or obstacles you face, NEVER give up on your dreams.
I chose to react to one of Adam’s early performances which is his rendition of “Mad World” on American Idol. I wasn’t really a fan of the original version but I love what Adam does with it.

It's amazing how far Adam's vocals have come, he truly is a world class vocalist these days. I've seen many videos of him live and he rarely has an off night.

Even if he does have an off night it shows he’s human which is what we all are right? There’s a clip of him singing I think it was we will rock you and couldn’t remember the words and burst out laughing - I’d much prefer that over the spice girls who made it sound awful

Adam has said in interviews that he messed up the end of the song, singing the background singer's harmony rather than the melody. Still sounded wonderful to me.

I personally think Adam Lambert is the greatest male vocalist of our generation. Excellent pitch, tone, emotional delivery, stage presence, good looking etc. He's the whole package. It really is a shame that he didn't win that season and I will never NOT bitch about it lol. I honestly think the only reason he didn't win is because everyone found out he was gay and back in 2009 people were nowhere near as accepting as people are in 2019. Things have changed so much in the past decade, it's really crazy. Anyway, great video! I'd love to see you react to him singing before Idol! He sang "Is Anybody Listening?" in the play "The Ten Commandments" and man, his performance is so good. He also sang "What's Up" "I Can't Make You Love Me" and "Dust in the Wind" very well in some other videos.

You pointed out some very specific details about Adam's performance of this song. Flaws in performance is not a bad thing; it's real and dangerous and that's why I hate auto tune. It's interesting to compare this to his performance of Mad World in 2016 on Idol. You can hear the subtle maturity of his voice and what is amazing about that is the fact he was recovering from strep throat at the time. He is an amazing vocalist. His Believe at the Kennedy Honors and Who Wants to Live Forever at the Isle of Wight are mesmerizing. Totally enjoyed your insight.

Good review! Adam was second place that year but yet he’s going on to do far more with his career. The same thing happened with Chris Daughtry. Chris Daughtry was number four and I thought for sure he was a winner, & did not. however, Chris Daughtry went on to have a fabulous musical career. I love Chris Daughtry’s voice, too. Adam is touring with Queen & i’m glad to know the boys found another good singer so that they can continue playing their fabulous music around the world as well as paying tribute to Freddie mercury.

Interesting you are the only vocal reaction video where you mentioned the transition from passagio. I remember purchasing your program around the earliest years of RU-vid but I noticed is songs with fewer modulations like rock songs vs R&B are easier to work around passagio. In your program I had an easier time with the female version as I have a similar type of range to Adam. Great program and I recommend it👏👏

It wasn’t his interpretation. It’s the version used in Donnie Darko arranged by Gary Jules Adam was 27 here. He had to choose a song from his birth year and this came out from Tears for Fears that year. He’s a flawless legend now.

I couldn't tell what he was sitting on at first haha.. but Adam has just continued to tighten up that pitch, and seems like a cool guy. I had to be reminded that was a Tears For fears song THAT's one of my fave vocal pairs, those guys did some unique stuff in the 80's and it's still killer.. so, anyway great song sung by a great singer as told by a great singer who also teaches. AND BOY what a fitting song cause it's a MAd WOrld

Finally someone says it. imo People really need to understand giving someone credit. :) People seem to forget his impact. He's a pioneer in his own right. That's Historic for solo reasons, he made history in pop and in Rock (Queen stuff being obvious) . Pop/Rock prince. I think Beyoncé is legendary, BTS, Adele, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeren, Taylor Swift, Drake (Sighs), Eminem, 50 cent?, Nicki Minaj, Sam Smith- not now; but eventually.ER am I missing anyone?

It wasn’t off the stage of idol to Queen. . It was in Queens clutches , so no one snatched him up . Adam has his own solo stuff , to do .!

Glad you posted this Ken - it reminds us that even singers who are just killing it nowadays were once upon a time "a little pitchy." Gives the punters among us a little hope! Also from what I know of Idol (particularly in Australia) the winners aren't the ones who go on to successful careers, it's always the lower place getters. Sometimes I wonder if the winners/runner up places are decided well beforehand by the powers that be, but I may be wrong.

Great commentary, especially your notes to other singers on not giving up. It's interesting when he performed this again on AI for the finale, he didn't go as high on the ending notes. Saw an interview where he was watching this particular performance live and he was kinda shocked by them and said he didn't intent to do that. It's great to hear incredible singers critique themselves! Such a humble and honest guy.

This is great advise ... Check out Chris Daughtry because he finished 4th and turned his eviction into a great career. The following year, American Idol used his original song I'm Coming Home as a feature music for the show. I think he's the best vocalist to come from Idol.

Adam Lambert put the "Hey, look at me; I'm the next Elvis" persona away. (Remember the heavy eye makeup and black nails?) It was a smart move when he began coming across more vulnerable and approachable. In the beginning he was turning a lot of people off. Great singer.

So Adam sings out of breath and pitchy - and still gets a rare standing ovation from Simon.That definitely tells us something. Maybe the proof is in the singing performance? :) I remember being disappointed when he did not win, but he worked it out to success regardless. Adam is impressive on so many levels.

American Idol has commercials and product placement throughout the show and the show itself is actually one big ad so they can sell the recordings of whomever wins. The show is an ad that breaks for ads and in the end we get stuck with more crappy pop music by the winners that are then treated as a commodity by American Idol. Adam Lambert has a fantastic voice and is doing a great job with Queen and since getting off the show. Thanks for all the great videos Ken. Please tell some more rock stories like that kick ass one with the legendary Lemmy. I could see people throwing bottles at Katy Perry especially after she stole the home of a group of elderly nuns leaving them destitute and broke (one poor nun even died from the stress of the court battle)but why would anyone throw anything at Motorhead?

Great stuff! I could tell he was going to be a star from the first time I heard him. I wasn't surprised that he didn't win because although he was an awesome singer, he wasn't the viewer's flavor of the month. He's become quite the performer with Queen and his solo stuff. Not totally my style, but I appreciate his unbelievable talent. Would love to see you do a vocal coach reaction to Shinedown. Great singer with very cool mic technique and a killer band. I can't believe this performance was about a decade ago.... I was in high school and I stopped watching American Idol after this season because the fact that he lost made me so angry.

Hi Ken, love your reactions. Adam Lambert has a new song, On the Moon, which he sang in the Late Late show. Again showing awesome control. It would be nice if you could react to that one or his Late Late performance of Closer to You. Both are stunning acoustic performances by Adam.

To this day I have this performance on my playlist. Adam is my favorite Idol. Recently one contestant held my attention the way Adam did: Michael J. Woodard. I'm not sure how you'd rate his vocal talent, but I found him fascinating to watch every week.

The cover that Adam is singing is actually a cover by "Gary Jules" he was the one who made "Mad World" very popular by singing/making it more emotional

Thank you for the reaction, loved your technical observations. What a peculiar choice of performance though, yes there were a couple pitch issues here, even Adam admitted it. Love ur artist and song choices. Great diversity. Much respect. The thing I learned about that type show is it’s generally more of a popularity contest than a vocal competition. As is the case with my current hobby of fitness.... judging has always had the subjective elements. When u have a head judge or judge go rogue though...it most definitely causes their credibility to take a hit. Love you, Ken. XOXO
