Hi everybody, just wanted to remind everybody that if you were to go up to Alice in chains in the early 90s and tell them that they needed to represent our government by telling their fans to wear masks and be vaccinated in order to come to one of their shows, they would murder you. Listen to Mad Season and his pre AIC rarities. Layne was a big Prince fan. If you listen closely, you can hear Blues and the slight influences of Prince. I really love the way you break down both the technical side and respect the emotional aspects of Lane's vocal style. I ran barricade lines on probably of their shows. They were amazing live. He had his demons and it totally flowed through his vocals. It was painful to see him self-destruct. Grung had a lot of that.

Wading through mud with sharp painful peaks in between is a perfect way of describing his voice, you hit the nail on the head there. He draws his words out in such a distinct, sludgy way, but when he reaches those higher octaves you can feel the emotions he's pouring into them so much. One the reasons Alice in Chains is one of my favorite bands. The instruments compliment his way of singing in such an awesome way.

Thank you for doing your reactions and input on Alice in Chains and mostly the incredible human being, the late Layne Staley. He was a man with a huge talent yet he seemed to be a humble down to earth man. His voice was so powerful with every song he did. Even on the Unplugged concert he still kicked some serious butt. I would love to have seen where he would go if he was still with us. I wonder if his voice would still be as strong. I hope it would have been. I read somewhere that his voice was so incredibly POWERFUL that if you were super close to the stage where he was you could hear his voice over top of the amps and speakers. What I mean is that you could here his voice coming from his body. I hope I am making sense to this. The speakers are so incredibly loud at concerts so to hear his voice over the speakers must have been earth shattering and one hell of an experience. I wish I had the blessing to be able to see these super talented men do their thing.

This really opened my eyes (or ears?) to how our psyche's come out in our art whether or not we intend it to. Layne had such power and natural talent but how you described his flat notes and lethargy and almost avoiding accurate pitch absolutely resembled the self-doubt and sabotage of how he lived. So much beauty and skill but ultimately tainted. Still love that man and I miss what he brought to this world.

You are thinking with your heart to claim Layne for issues and not with your head. In terms of vocal technique, Cornell reached 6-8 octaves and he could climb 4 feet in only one song like Beyond The Weel he was one of the greatest singers in terms of vocal technique, outside that his voice is a factor of the junction of 4 dimensions: range, power, volume and depth. His vocals were so amazing that even women who have an ease in reaching the tones, had difficulty checking out the tribute they did to him. Cornell was blessed by the universe, his voice is one of the most powerful that exists and this is undeniable in terms of talent as a vocalist.
