Hello Singderellos,
In this video, I react for the first time to Corey Taylor performing ‘Snuff’. In this video, I analyse his amazing performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.
Corey is a powerhouse of a vocalist! His display of raw emotion is breathtaking. This performance also reminded me of Disturbed's "Sound of Silence"!

I'm so excited to be a part of your singing journey, It's one that truly never ends.
Love you forever,

re: Corey’s neck… it is definitely kind of legendary lol. so much so that he found out a few years back that he had broken his damn neck *17 years* prior and didn’t notice 😳 went for a checkup because of progressive weakness and nerve issues and his dr was shocked he could still function at all. they did emergency surgery to replace 2 vertebra and shave some other bone that was damaging his spinal cord. he didn’t tell Corey the whole “you should have been paralyzed” bit until after the surgery as to not scare the piss out of him.
@Zabiru-

Yep. As much as this sounds like some kind of "legendary metal singer urban legend"-type stuff, when it comes to Corey I can believe it. The amount of shit the guy has been through in his life is something else. From what little I know about it from interviews and the books he's written I'm not sure I'd want to trade places with him. Massive fame and money not-withstanding. Of course, he'd break his damn neck and not notice ^^ Considering the stage shows Slipknot does (and more importantly did in earlier years) it's not exactly far-fetched. I'm not 100% sure about this, but I remember either reading or hearing somewhere that he supposedly actually broke it by headbanging too hard. Which sounds nuts, but again - it is Corey "The Neck" Taylor we're talking about so who knows.

You should read up on the background to this song. It was originally written about his ex-wife but when Paul Gray (Slipknot bassist who had persuaded Corey to include it on the All Hope Is Gone Album) died, it's meaning evolved into homage to him - hence Corey's introduction about it being a heavy song form
@joshgruenbaum9379
@joshgruenbaum9379 2 года назад
That's not the story I've heard for this song. I've always heard the song is about a close female friend that helped him through recovery and some very dark times that he fell in love with but she didn't feel the same way. The Paul part is definitely right though.
@mrolsen6987
@mrolsen6987 2 года назад
I've heard both stories for years, so you both win. Joke aside, the song is clearly written about a girl, for me it doesn't matter about who. The fact that the meaning changed and why is more important, you get the picture of why he's having a rough time perform it.

I'm sitting in my car eat lunch , and watching this reaction made me smile 🙂, I've been a Maggot since I was a teenager and I enjoy Slipknot on their brutal songs and ballads/slow songs, Snuff is one of the most genuine songs ive heard , the feeling it gives , the pain in the lyrics, it's just all a beautiful chaotic feeling, everytime I hear the first words "bury all your secrets in my skin...." I always get chills and get in my feelings, awesome song and reaction , Maggot4Life 🤘🙂

Congrats on 100K well deserved, just wanna add that you are (in my opinion) the best vocal reaction channel on RU-vid, you clearly have a passion for vocals as a whole, other channels seem to be put off when reacting to certain genres but you seem to focus a lot more on the vocal aspect of it, keep up the good work, love your humour and how you imitate some of the heavier vocal techniques

As a singer myself, I can with great confidence state that you are THE best vocal reaction channel on youtube. There are many others who are really good, but they don't have this depth of knowledge in technique. When they listen to something that is spectacularly difficult to do, as a singer, it pisses me of when they don't seem to understand how difficult that thing really was. Recent examples include Chhap Tilak, and Bol hu. Every non-eastern reaction channel understates the singing ability. They simply don't have the knowledge of vocals. BUT YOU, when you mentioned gamakas and then proceeded to demonstrate, I was blown away then. and I still get blown away at every reaction of yours. You are the best.

Loved the analysis. First time viewer, you earned a subscriber. This song hits me personally because I lived it as well. My wife abandoned me when I was at my lowest point, an absolute dredge of society. I was toxic, a liar, a cheater, and a substance abuser. I was so miserable to her, she was absolutely right to leave. The pain I feel from this was knowing she fought until she just couldn’t, and I was too in my own spiral to see I was throwing our lives away. Sorry if that’s TMI. I thought I’d share a personal account as to why this resonates with so many people.

So this song was originally on Slipknot's "All Hope is Gone" CD and was the last song he wrote with bassist Paul Grey prior to his passing. That's why it's hard for him to get through. The current Slipknot tour is the first time they've included "Snuff" in the setlist in several tours. From the same show but, on the fun side, although you should have the live from Download 2009 in your previously watched list, check out "Spit It Out". Live by Slipknot it's known for the "JUMP THE F*** UP!" moment. From this acoustic show, it's such a humorous moment. And don't sleep on his work as vocalist for Stone Sour or his solo release. If you want to jump from ballad to ballad then check out "Home" from his solo "CMFT" CD. Or Stone Sour's cover Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game". Stone Sour though is more the hard rock version of Slipknot's metal. All great stuff, depending on your mood and musical needs at the time.

So love your examination of his performance! I would love to see you react to Queensryche's "Take Hold of the Flame" live from Tokyo. Geoff Tate is well recognized as one of the best hard rock vocalists from the 80s-90s. His range from lows to operatic highs is phenomenal. Another would be Bruce Dickenson of Iron Maiden, particularly "Hallowed Be Thy Name". And for a bit of a duet/accompaniment try Kamelot's "The Haunting" from their "One Cold Winters Night" live with guest vocalist Simone Simons of Epica. Looking forward to more of your reactions! /cheers

Been listening to Slipknot for a good long while and I definitely feel, like you said, that Corey is excellent at letting his emotions show through his voice. Granted, with Slipknot those emotions have been mostly limited to frustration, feeling of impotence, anger, outrage, and pure rage at some points but they shine through like a beacon in the music, and of course me being an anguished teenager, as you do, at the time I started listening to their stuff, it really spoke to me. Now I just really listen to it because it's just really good music.

So, pretending no one mentioned this, I believe this performance was shortly after the death of Slipknot Bassist Paul Gray, who was one of the people, if not the person, who convinced Corey to release Snuff with Slipknot, so, it has the extra emotional pain of Corey dealing with Paul's death as well as the emotional pain of Corey dealing with the loss of a romantic relationship in which he was more invested than his girlfriend at the time. There was a rumor that Snuff was written for Stone Sour, but, Corey himself confirms that Snuff was always meant to be released by Slipknot.

Corey Taylor is also in the band called Stone Sour, he was in that before Slipknot. And he actually does a lot of acoustic shows. I would recommend people trying to listen to some of his early stuff from Stone Sour like this song : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q5Uuux82m6g.html&ab_channel=sumpunk It's called I can't believe and is from 1994. You would really not think it's Corey Taylor. However they made some really good song back then, and with really deep lyrics, well worth a listen. I also wish when people did a reaction of this song they did it of an other one that this version. There are some where he actually get super emotional and have small break downs completing the song because of the meaning it took on with Paul Gray. It adds something more to the performance. Also. His neck is famous in the industry. there is more memes and stories about Corey's neck than there is of his mask.. it's a thing on it's own. And enjoy the moving.

Keep at it Lolli. You have all the elements you need to add another zero to this number. It's should only be a matter of time. Best I've seen.

I love the fact that you touched upon the similarities between Corey and David! I may not be as knowledgeable as you but I picked up on the similarities that you talked about at 6:33. And as always I thoroughly enjoyed your very technical breakdown of this wonderful performance :)

I frickin' love watching your videos. Your enthusiasm combined with your vast knowledge and talent for conveying said knowledge in an entertaining and informative matter is amazing. Love you. Love your vids. I'll once again suggest either Linkin' Park's "Given Up" live here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uOJRx5GEDu0.html For an amazing combination of vocal talent, various techniques, and conveyed raw emotion. And also anything by Type O Negative as he has such an amazing and unique voice that I think you'd really love analyzing. Lots of good song choices there, but I'd say maybe "Love you to death" But there's several to choose from there. Keep up the amazing work!

Congrats on 100K!!! I’m not a huge slipknot fan myself but this is a great song. The Swedish prog metal band Soen (a band you really should check out) recently covered this on a live feed they did in jan. Amazing version

Thanks for this ! and I say +1 to all the comments below that state your knowledge ! I'm looking forward for my (buy my coffee) request to come alive, hopefully sometime soon ;) ("MB14 - 2018 La Cup Showcase" or "Baptista Aquavista - Psaume de David")

Oh man, if what you said about neck muscles and neck as a whole is true, which i almost fully belive then i can only imagine how powerful would be Mike Tyson's voice, coz he had (maybe even has now) 22 inch neck (in diameter) , which is approximately 57cm, if im not mistaken. He has a lisp, but imagining him singing or growling even with it brings some joy to me :)

I'd love to see you react to Teddy Swims. Pretty much anything he's done, it's all brilliant, but if I had to pick one in particular to see you analyse it would be his cover of I Can't Make You Love Me.

Great reaction! This was very entertaining and I've learned some things (not that I could put them to use, because I can't sing at all😅). If you don't know it yet, please check out Falling In Reverse "The Drug In Me Is Reimagined". Subbed! Greetings from Germany
