I was going to say the exact same thing. I imagine my eyes were just that wide the first time I heard 'Deadhead'. He really shines in this EMG video. I don't have any hesitation in saying I personally think he has the best, most powerful voice in modern music, dating back to the 60's. He's done a lot for his public throughout the pandemic, free live stream concerts, podcasts, streaming sessions where he shows how he produces and mixes his music, he held charity events to raise money for healthcare workers. Not only is he a wonderful singer and composer, he is a wonderful human being. He's very versatile as well, one day he releases an ambient album, a country/Americana one the next, electronic, pop, progressive rock, extreme metal - he does it all. Since you're a vocal coach, Higher at Plovdiv might be nice, or Why the Quarantine Concert version, Bring him Home in Auckland, Death of Music at Royal Albert Hall. Beware for Deadhead at RAH - it has a tendency to get blocked, you might need to blur the video.

At 19 years old Devin was scouted by legendary guitar shredder Steve Vai to front a band he was putting together. At some point Steve send Dev to a vocal doctor to check out his vocal chords; and the doctor told him that if he continued to sing the way he did he would permanently lose his voice within two years. That was nearly 30 years ago now, and Devin's voice has only gotten stronger.

Hello Bethany, lovely to meet you! I too make reaction videos, but just about the emotional impact of the music rather than trying to be too academic about it. When I started about 4.5 years ago, I worked through a lot of Devin Townsend material, and I would most definitely call myself a fan, having acquired vinyl, CD, DVD and Blu-ray of everything he’s ever done. There are literally like 25 albums to explore, live records, concert DVDs and loads of RU-vid stuff. I know comments below a video can be somewhat overwhelming (from experience) so there’s no need to respond or answer this. To continue your Devin journey, you’ll soon discover that he is one of the most authentic vulnerable artists out there, and everything he writes is as an emotional response to the world around him and how he makes sense of it. It often resonates with the listener who is looking for a barometer and explanation for their own reaction to the world. With this in mind, there is no Devin period that repeats, so from the early days of Strapping Young Lad and the angry extreme industrial metal that SYL made to Ghost, a stripped back chilled Enya-esque record, to the bonkers but brilliant chaos of Deconstruction, to the shiny effervescent poppiness of Epicloud, to a pre-pandemic Empath there is nothing that’s wrong to explore. However, for what it’s worth, here’s where I’d go next! (These are mostly live and easy to find on RU-vid) Deep Peace - from Live at Plovdiv Deadhead - live at Royal Albert Hall The Death Of Music - Live at the Royal Albert Hall Coast- live from By A Thread concerts Grace - live from The Retinal Circus Detox - live at The Retinal Circus Why? - live from his studio quarantine online concert Genesis - live at Roundhouse 1. Numbered 2. Awake 3.Pixillated - all live at the By A Thread concerts Higher - live at Plovdiv Mountain Top - with Che Aimee Dorvil - live Dunlop sessions You know, there’s so much to unpack and to enjoy, take your time and enjoy the journey. Not everything will work for you, but the majority should connect! Have fun! Jim

He does have nice lows too, altogether amounting to over 5 octaves of harsh+clean range, at his peak. Best all-around range showcase might be Higher, Deadhead is the most expressive and shows off the highs. Lightworker or Why reflect the recently emergent Broadway Devin. So wonderful to get to watch you discover Devin Townsend. Devin fits into the broader theme of great metal vocalists using wide varieties of clean and/or harsh vocal placements to great effect. You wanted a resource to learn more about harsh vocals, so I'd recommend this video by vocal coach Mary Z (who specializes in harsh vocals) explaining the fundamentals of the different types: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GBrGvh4LjMs.html . Her channel in general is a great resource. Also, Lolie from The Fairy Voice Mother RU-vid channel knows a fair bit about the subject and I'm sure she'd be happy to point you towards some more resources. Also, a bunch of people are going to start begging you to react to Devin's performance of Deadhead at the Royal Albert Hall, and I just want to warn you in advance that he had a cold for that performance and that's why he sounds a touch worse for wear at the end of the song. If you want a version of Deadhead without Devin having a cold, I'd recommend reacting to the Plovdiv performance of it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vU-GP41LeSY.html I think it presents a better example of his voice on that song, since he didn't have a cold at that performance. Finally, I would add to the suggestions that you react to Devin's performance of Why? from his quarantine shows : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xsd4ZkFVOHY.html It's Devin leaning into the musical theatre aspects of his musical inclinations and it's GREAT.

Just the perfect amount of reaction and just listening to the song and appreciating it in all its splendor, and not pausing every 2 seconds to talk about something seemingly important. In a world of too many reaction videos, thank you for this!

Great reaction to the tremendous Devin Townsend he really is something else, incredible musician, incredible singer, incredibly charismatic and fun to watch. I think now is a good time to introduce you to another vocalist, Will Ramos who will take your path to harsh vocals to the next level. on his wiki page it says devin is synesthetic, so he percieves music as colors and i always imagine him as one who can see the whole spectrum of tones, while we other normal people basically can distinct like 16 base colors from each other and then vary the brightness (octaves) and other stuff, so for him it's easy to hear if he's perfect on pitch or not and play with aaall sorts of tools to change his tone to whatever he likes oh and for harsh vocals check out mary zimmers channel 'Voicehacks', i highly recommend her clips where she growls on helium...you're welcome :)

for a teacher who is really good at harsh vocals of all sorts, Kardavox Academy here on youtube is very much specialized in the heavily distorted sounds. And The Charismatic Voice has a video where we get a laryngoscopic view of Will Ramos' (Lorna Shore) instrument as he tries a couple of different harsh vocals, which is also used in currently ongoing scientific research of vocal production. Mary Zimmer of VoiceHacks, another youtube channel focused on harsh vocals with more of an educational bent than the aforementioned, has a similar and newer video of the laryngoscopy of Enrico Di Lorenzo (Hideous Divinity) which should also be insightful.

Thank you for this, such a wonderful reaction. Devy is an incredible musician and vocalist. I agree with the recommendation of "Why" and "Deadhead". The quarantine version of " Why" would probably be better, because of the camera being much closer, but definitely check out the Order of Magnitude version afterwards, it's very entertaining. On "Deadhead", as others have said he was battling a cold, but it's also later in the program, after he had performed an entire album, and a few more as well.

his best performance of this song is "Kingdom - Live By A Tread in London 2011" because it features one of the best live collabs with Anneke van Giersbergen also, this is a re-make of the same song done in this style, his old recording was exclusively in the screamed/harsh vocal style on the album Physicist

7:31 - If you might be looking for a vocal coach who could talk to you more about growling and other extreme-vocal techniques, I can think of no one that I’d more highly recommend than @KardavoxAcademy. For instance, if an apples-to-apples comparison may be helpful, here’s his reaction video to Jinjer’s “Pisces”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sPkkrzr8bqY.html
