Genesis are an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, in 1967. The band's most commercially successful line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. In the 1970s, during which the band also included singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett, Genesis were among the pioneers of progressive rock.
"Mama" is a song by the English rock band Genesis, released as the first single in 1983 from their self-titled album. It is recognisable for its harsh drum machine introduction composed by Mike Rutherford, which leads into minimalist synthesizer lines in a minor tonality and finally Phil Collins' reverb-laden voice.
Composers: Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford
Producer: Genesis, Hugh Padghem
Performed by Genesis
Genres: Folk, Pop, World
Origin: Godalming, Surrey, England
Date
1990

Even with all the fame and attention, I would still argue Collins is very underrated. Superbly subtle drummer, great songwriter and an incredibly charismatic and entertaining singer. No idea who is the best drummer of all time, in fact no idea how to measure it. but Phil and Neil Peart are for me the best composers of drums of all time.
@TenMinuteTrips
@TenMinuteTrips Год назад
By now, in 2023, the use of the adjective, “underrated” should be just totally banned from the RU-vid comments section. It’s hard to find, maybe possibly even impossible to find one music video on RU-vid where absolutely nobody invoked the term “underrated” to describe the band or a member of the band or a song or whatever. By whose standard is someone or something underrated? Why would you even be arguing about that? And best drum composers “of all time?” You’re going to have to go back further than that. Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Carl Palmer…

@@TenMinuteTrips So you disagree. Fair enough, I don't agree with you, although I would add Palmer to the list of great composers. Also I think underrated is particularly applicable to Collins as he is more often than not dismissed or ridiculed because of his chart success.

@@TenMinuteTrips I've been saying this for years. Underrated is a nonsense term. Not underrated by the thousands that go to the concerts or the millions that buy the records. Only underrated by those who have never heard of him.....and then if you don't know who he is, then you can't rate him anyway. Well said sir

Great reaction and analysis. Mama is one of my favorite Genesis songs of all time. I've always felt that Phil Collins was criminally underrated as both a singer and a drummer. I think maybe his massive commercial success and acclaim as a songwriter got in the way of him being taken seriously as a musician. He wasn't particularly flashy on either vocals or drums, but very unique and emotive.

he was never underrated as drummer. He is included in all top list of drummers and his influence and style are recognized by many famous drummers
@johnhmaloney
@johnhmaloney Год назад
@@beshuro I started looking at those lists in '85, when he was at the height of his popularity and I never saw him on any of them. There were the classics like Bonzo, Peart and Moon ... occasionally Baker or Mitchell and the (then) current guys like Lee, Benante and Lombardo, but I never saw Collins or any other pop guys for that mater. He sold countless records and did a ton of session work and it could be argued that that's more important, but he was never considered a great drummer in the public consciousness.

this vocal performance is still one of his best. At this point in his development, he really mastered the "growl" in his voice designed to project power. The studio version continues to give me goosebumps 40 years later or whatever it's been. Despite his success, he remains painfully underrated both as a complete singer and as one of the most innovative and distinctive drummers in the history of the medium. While people may only remember '80's Phil, the body of his work in it's entirety will go down as one of the most diverse, influential and successful of anyone. What a legacy! What a vapor trail to leave behind!

OMG yeah, I completely forgot about that. It worked really well. Gonna have to go back and watch Magnum again. Really unique show that had a lot of effort behind it. Loved that you never knew what you were going to get from episode to episode, from silly comedy to tragedy, adventure, war based drama, buddy based drama, mystery, supernatural spooky, spoof, parody, etc. Read somewhere that Magnum was the first network show to ever feature a cold blooded murder by the HERO of the show, when Magnum killed Ivan, knowing that his diplomatic immunity would allow him to get away with war crimes in the past and murder in present day Hawaii. Not many shows ever took that sort of risk. Not only did they get away with it, it worked within the narrative of the character.

It is very interesting to hear you analyze my favorite vocalists. Phil Collins replaced Peter Gabriel in the progressive rock band Genesis in 1975, and many listeners could often not tell the difference between Phil's and Peter's vocals, often thinking Phil was the only singer in Genesis or thinking it was the same singer after 1976. Peter's and Phil's harmonies in Genesis were lush and gorgeous because of their similarities. You seem not to have reacted to any solo Pete Gabriel songs or any Genesis songs with Peter. I would be very interested to hear your side-by-side comparison of the two singers, especially of their Genesis songs. The live version of Peter's solo masterpiece "In Your Eyes" may change your life. Peter's character voices in the 20-minute Genesis epic "Supper's Ready" and throughout the concept double-album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway showcase Peter at his best. I hope you listen to more progressive music vocalists. Thank you!

Can you imagine having TWO of the best male singers in one rock band? I think Gabriel's best vocal work, showing his vast range, is contained in the epic 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'. (and with such interesting music) There is a video out there on RU-vid that isolates Phil's voice when singing with Peter in The Lamb recording. I had no idea Collins could sing SO high. His falsetto in those harmonies is mesmerizing. And Gabriel's range may be even wider!

Phil really didn't sing and drum at the same time. He did some harmony stuff when Gabriel was in the band, but after Gabriel left, I don't think Phil ever sang from behind the kit. He would always go back to the front when the singing parts came up and let Chester handle the drumming.

I really liked how you took the style of Isaak's song in a totally different direction. The drum sequence being a straighter pulse with almost no upbeats mixed with your singing approach in a unique and surprising style direction, which I personally think should be done more with covers. Your tone and technique were really impressive, and I appreciate the times I thought you pulling out deliberate flexes, like the whistle falsetto towards the end, (or whatever that stuff is called). Makes me think of some of the 80s hard rock guitar slinging, a sorta one-uping, like "can you do this, hmm?" Great Performance

When Phil worked with Peter Gabriel, on Peter's 3rd album, he really developed his iconic "Phil" sound. They developed the gated reverb on the drums for that album, and Phil went on to make that his iconic sound. Also, Peter said that there wouldn't be any cymbals on his album, and there aren't. Not a crash, hi-hat, ride, all the drums are done without any cymbals. Peter thought it would play into the darker ambience of the album. So Phil had to mess around with the drums in a way that didn't use cymbals, and he carried a lot of that forward as well. I'm typically not a fan of his, but as a drummer myself, I do love his drumming.

Phil is/was such a talent and a great performer. My favorite Phil story is I went to see one of his concerts on his solo No Jackets Required tour. It was at a large 30,000+ seat indoor arena that was packed to the rafters. Fairly early in the show the house/main speaker towers went out... The only sound was from their stage monitors.. Phil stopped the show and after a couple minutes of waiting to see if they could get the main speakers back up, he turned around his vocal monitor to the crowd and proceeded to entertain us with maybe 30 minutes of the craziest dirty jokes & stories... They finally managed to get everything running again and he still went ahead and performed another nearly 3 hours of his solo music and Genesis music.. I'll never forget that night.

It’s all those songs that start simple and bring in the drums later. Tonight, mama, don’t care anymore. But Phil gave all of those songs a unique sound.

So glad I got to see them one last time on The Last Domino tour. Phil may not be able to drum anymore, but the man can still sing! This song was amazing as always

I saw the tour in Buffalo in 1984 when this song was being promoted and it was the best concert I've ever seen.

The whole self-titled album is a great bridge from the prog era to the pop era Genesis - I generally try to ignore that _Abacab_ exists. so that is sits between _Duke_ and _Invisible Touch_ :)

Great seeing this reaction, Beth. Phil seems to be very polarizing as a singer. Personally, I love his voice. Singing as a different character, as he does in “Mama” was very much a carryover from the Peter Gabriel era of the band… a technique Gabriel continued to use as he moved on with his solo career.

One of the great drummers. But also a fantastic vocalist. My favorite band. Original always. Please have a listen to Ripples from A Trick of the Tail. Love to hear your take on that one. Keep up the great work. Andy. Kent.

This reaction video and this performance should be an ad for going to see live music. You may like/or dislike certain recordings or albums by any given artist, but until you hear that song performed live, you don't really have an idea of just how good or powerful a performance can be in person. It can take on a whole different meaning for you. What a gig, and what a performance! 🙌

Genesis is to me, the very finest band ever....Phil is my hero in terms of musicality (love the down-scale in his voice, never realise until now 🤘🤘)....but you mentioned also Sarah McLachlan in comparison....wow! you have my like and my suscribe......it's funny, 'cause Sarah one time said that Genesis was one of the bands that she listens in her youth....great review, greetings

My favorite era of Genesis (Duke, Abacab, and Genesis albums). Invisible Touch was big while I was in high school, but the preceding albums were in rotation on my study playlist in college. Phil Collins was at his apex at that time between Genesis and his solo work. He remains my favorite drummer.

Great song. One of my favorite Genesis songs. I was able to see them live during the Invisible Touch Tour. In Chicago Illinois. Had front row center seats. It was a spectacular show. Check out Phil Collins solo song In The Air Tonight, there is a great live version that will blow your mind.

Im going through a genesis kick rn, there are no comparisons to what they brought to the table during their tenure, most of their songs are absolutely incredible and the rest are just good ☺️

I remember this when it came out, it was most odd and certainly stood out, it was 1983 so punk and new wave were gone, so was Ska/2-tone, we were hearing on the radio shiny synth pop, US Black electro soul on the radio along with saccharine ballads and novelty songs.

Dam.... i had bought the 45 rpm record (always in my home) in 1984, when i was in High School (and yet a little young Metal Bassit, son of Sir Steve Harris). That was a mindblowing song in Club !!! Thx Dear about your React here... stay & keep safe

I know he can/could sing he made a living out of it. It's nice to hear a different perspective on a voice I grew up with and maybe took for granted. Phil is the best. Thank you. Love Adam x

My favourite part of this track was Collins' drumming towards the end.... those draggy fills that could only possibly be him. Bloody marvellous.
