Her phrasing kills me. She's telling a story, she's always telling a story and while she will shape the notes to her liking you will understand. Now I'll go watch her do Stairway to Heaven again with Nancy and Jason and a giant choir that couldn't bury her. Ann is the biz. For real.

Beth, I wish you could have seen and heard Heart back when I first knew them. Though the band was from Seattle, they called my Vancouver, Canada, home for their early years. The first time I saw them was at a high school dance night, just before they had their first hit album with Dreamboat Annie. Standing five feet from the stage was an incredible experience and Ann's vocals are an amazing experience from that close. As you can imagine, the teenage boys made Ann and Nancy Wilson the talk of countless adulatory conversations for months afterward, yet I was enamoured with the entire band's performance. I saw them many times after that, playing at the local roller skating rinks and free concerts on the city parks, as well as the numerous clubs I could bluff my teenage self into at that time. I saw the band so many times, they began to recognise me in the crowds, though we never spoke. In those early years, Heart played a mix of R&B, Rock, a heavy Led Zeppelin influence and Gypsy/Roma Folk. Ann also often played flute to augment her vocals. They were truly unique, as no other group sounded remotely like them. The last time I saw them, August 27 1978,, was as the closing act of a multi-band show at Empire Stadium, the same place where Roger Bannister first broke the four minute mile. I was in the fourth or fifth row of a crowd of over 45,000, the day filled with solid bands and long delays under the crushing August sun. As Heart took the stage, the sun was setting and a wonderfully cooling breeze wafted over us from the Pacific Ocean. The lights from Grouse Mountain, a warming backdrop across the inlet, over the foothills where I lived. When the band first arrived, Ann noticed me and smiled, letting her sister know I was there. After a quick smile and nod from Ann, they opened the full day's finale and brought us all to a crescendo of both hard rocking and gorgeous ballads, taking the occasion to introduce us to songs from their latest album, the amazing Dog and Butterfly. I wish you could have seen Ann and Nancy and the rest of Heart at this time, Beth. I'm sure you'd have been as mesmerised as I was. Ann and Nancy kept the Heart name after the original band broke up but, to me, they were never the same. The variety of styles and sounds they played was never equaled, despite the bigger hits the sisters enjoyed during the 80s. I was blessed to hearing them in those early years, as I had been with so many bands and singers who would go on to bigger fame afterwards. I grew up in a magical time for live music ♥

They were so good when they were at the peak of their powers and I was fortunate to live through those times as a young lad becoming musically aware and discovering all of the great music of that era. Look anyone reacting to Heart can do the popular rocking stuff like "Barracuda" & "Magic Man" & so forth. But what about the hidden gems that didn't get the hard rockin' rock station air play? Like this gem, "Dog & Butterfly". For me it's the most beautiful song ever written. It brings a tear to my eye every time i listen to it. It's about going after your dreams. The studio version has a little drum with it, but whenever performed live it was just Ann & Nancy Wilson. Both on acoustic & both singing.
