It's interesting to see how James has evolved as a singer over the years. I've seen in the second half of his career where he spends a lot of time warming up and taking care of his vocal cords. I hear his singing being much clearer and more enunciated. A lot of other metal/rock singers show they haven't.

This is my favorite Metallica song of all. That lead never fails to transport me to a different time, and not just when I 1st heard it. I'll still get goosebumps listening !! I have most still on CD, and had the Black cassette long before any of my friends. They played it non-stop, and then I had to listen in their vehicles, and by the time the radio overplayed it was sick and burnt on it. Until then I thought it their best work, and even above Master. Just my own personal feelings, and also believe Hetfield an underrated guitarist 🎸🤘

I want to say the reason for that was at some point in the 90's I think he blew his voice out right in the middle of show and afterwards when he was told how he did it and how to avoid he started talking singing lessons.

Metallica as a group are gods, they are masters of playing in the pocket. They are so raw and powerful with a mix of beautiful skill. Credit to James Hetfield he is an atom bomb on this song, his voice has evolved with age and the power and energy he brings to his live performances is something else. Projects at the crowd MASTER and you can’t help but scream back master with him. On top of this the man is playing a guitar, with his signature down picking, controlling breathing, interacting with the crowd and keeping in time with his fellow band mates. James Hetfield… we salute you!

Hey, Beth, you should react to John Bush. When James felt insecure about his singing abilities, he wanted John to be Metallica's vocalist. John is the vocalist of Armored Saint and was the vocalist for a while of Anthrax (another band of the Big 4 of thrash metal). I would recommend "Reign of Fire" from Armored Saint and "Only" from his time in Anthrax

this has probably been said before, but just in case, the flow of the song is meant to represent the various instances of addiction: the first part was the need, the want for the drug. the second part was the high, that euphoria that comes with it. and finally, the crash and the return to the need, expressing the endless cycle of addiction

The shifts in tempo reflect the various moods of the abuser; first, the intense anxiety of needing a fix; next, the peaceful high itself (hence the calm melody); finally, the resulting anxiety that follows and their need for another fix.

It's not just about the vocals, but playing this song and singing at the same time. This is a fast and technical song to play on guitar, it's definitely not easy. Then sing at the same time? Dang, I don't know how he does it so easily. I would feel much more comfortable playing guitar only, being able to look at the neck and my fingers.. but he does it all while putting on the front man show for the crowd too. So talented
@sporadicamnesic
@sporadicamnesic 2 года назад
This is at least twice as fast as the original recording as well. One thing Metallica have a habit of doing, especially during the 80s and early 90s, iss playing everything so much faster live, then add to that James Hetfield downpicks most of his rhythm parts on the guitar you understand why people refer to him as a machine and a master of downpicking (not puppets, lol). He's even said himself that he plays the guitar like a drum kit as he really wants that percussive sound from it when he plays

Beth Roars, what you mentioned about how the singer James Hetfield ends some of his notes with the "Ahhh". like "Fearaaaaa...that has actually always been a trademark of his. If you listen to alot more of their music you will hear that he does that alot! In my personal opinion James is one of the most underrated singers. This man had always had great skills and even now decades later he still slays in live performances. You should listen to more! Also his softer side like the song "Nothing Else Matters"

This was the second song I heard from Metallica. My sister had 2 boys in school who liked her and knew she was a fan. They both bought her a vinyl copy of the album for her birthday one year, and she gave me one of them since she obviously didn't need 2. This is the second track on the album. I always attributed the variety in Metallica's songs to the classical influence, which was one of the things that drew me to love them, the classical influence, the perfectly distorted guitar riffs, the epic solos, and the genius storytelling lyrics. Only recently have I come to appreciate James vocals. He may not have a huge vocal range, but he certainly conveys the emotion effectively and with passion.

When I started to get into Metallica my son was always going on about this song, and I thought yeah, it's a pretty good song. But then, we went to see them live for the first time. I got it, I totally got it. Watching them perform it live, it takes on a whole new life of it's own. This isn't a song, it's a living legend. Trying to learn this in the drums has been a challenge. But an incredibly fun one. The time signature changes aren't a problem. They feel right. It's the bass that gives me the most problems, the abductor in my thigh goes numb with the fast repetitions and pace, I lose the beat 🤣. Getting better with each playthrough, but I don't care what you say about Lars, still playing that live? Props to the guy for endurance.

When any band/artist says: "We didn't like the acoustics of that studio" IMHO it is a polite way of saying they didn't get along with the people they had to work with/situation/etc. at said studio. (OR, the band just couldn't pull it off/wasn't yet ready to make the album yet!) I really don't think it has very much ever actually been about the "sound of the room"! (At least, not for a rock-band that since the late 60's record instruments non-acoustically!)

Metallica is one of the few metal bands.of any genre of metal that has mastery over what they do. Some hits and misses over albums but more often than not, as an audience we know they will be at their best. In a way, the use three rules of good writing for their stuff that can be also found in the late Stephen Sondheim's work in musical theater: 1. Less is more. 2. Content dictates form. 3. God is in the details. Even if unconsciously, the seem to follow this path, song by song, album by album.

Listening to Metallica, any time from Ride the Lightening on, understand that there isn't a sound, a chord, a beat that isn't precicely placed in the music. They are perfectionists when it comes to their music.

I think there needs to be a Muppet version of Master of Puppets, except written and performed to be literally about puppets.

Where’s Jim Henson when you need him. Animal is the easy drummer pick.

@@bobby_c07 yes but it’s with Muppets. Basically the studio version of this song but Muppets are playing it!

Fun fact, he says "pancakes go" before kirks solo, instead of "fix me" after finding out in 2010 that cliff Burton (in 1985) jokingly told anthrax that that's what James was actually saying.

It is seamless complexity. Same with Rush & Led Zeppelin. Great Analysis! PS How would you like to play before 1.6 million people like they did in Moscow? ("Enter Sandman" video)

Would you do a Metallica song sung from when it originally came out vs. The same song sung today. He has had to change the way he sings, and I would love to hear you talk about the difference.
