Vocal Coach Reacts To Motorhead - Lemmy - Ace of Spades - Ken Tamplin
Lemmy from Motörhead was the real deal.
The band was active for 40 total years and he was the sole constant member for all of that time.
Motörhead is often considered a precursor to the new wave of British heavy metal. Their fusion of punk rock into the genre helped to pioneer speed metal and thrash metal.
In fact, they’ve actually been credited with influencing numerous musical scenes. Lemmy always insisted that they were a rock and roll band and that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound.
Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scene and is ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock
Their hit song “Ace of Spades” was their biggest track and was hugely successful. Today I’ll be reacting to a performance of this tune.
Let me know what you thought!

Hard to categorise? Lemmy's intro: Hi we are Motörhead and we play Rock and Roll.
@0okamino

I'd say that's the humble Lemmy way of putting it, but they really brought together bluesy rock, hard rock, punk and metal into the glorious maelstrom of their style. So, to put it as simply as Lemmy did, they ROCKED!

I've also seen Lemmy tell the story about the mic position as a means of not seeing the audience, so he could forget that the audience was made up of only 10 people (including the bar staff) and a dog.

I heard it was because lemmy had stage panic and the mic upwards would let him play and sing without being nervous, kinda makes sense, even with 10 people and a fog you could get anxious.

He’s done this a few times oddly. Like the conflicting stories of how Fast Eddie was introduced to Lemmy. I suppose in the end it doesn’t matter, but it is quite strange.

One of the things I liked about Lemmy’s singing was that it never really changed. A lot of male singers start to sing at a higher pitch as they age (see Axl, Vince Neil and even Bruce Dickinson). I’ve always wondered why that was? Lemmy on the other hand, never had that happen. Guess it was his style of singing that put little stress on his vocal cords.

I had te privilege of being his friend for more than 20 years. Once having some beers a friend of mine asked him "How does it feel to be the father of Thrash Metal?" I went there in the afternoon to buy a ticket to the show and he came out from backstage and I introduced myself, he shook my hand and then he realized I was no one important... haha. After the show he recognized me and signed my gold Ace of Spades CD from a bar stool sitting next to a super hot blonde chick while drinking Jack and Coke. RIP Lemmy

That's a good point you made at the beginning. There are so many "vocal coaches" analysing singers, but if I ask a question about singing I never get a reply. You, Ken, on the other hand, always answer. Plus you have so many albums out. I am currently getting them all. I had your Elvis cover of Can't Help Falling In Love playing the other day, and my neighbour is a mad Elvis fan. When I was coming home from work he said "I see you've discovered the King, about time I'm sick of hearing Tom Petty and that Dylan bloke!" So there you have it Ken, I didn't know whether to tell him it was you or let him carry on thinking it was Elvis. And anybody who reads this, have a listen to Ken's Elvis, it is amazingly like The King. As for Lemmy, I loved him he had no filter and nobody messed with him. I have a big framed poster of him in my house underneath it says 49% MF, 51% Son of a bitch.

Thank you Ken, the video was definitely fun to watch but I'd like to hear more about what you personally think about Lemmy's voice and singing style. To me he's got a perfect voice for rock and roll and just the right attitude, as you have described. I've had discussions with people that have an opposite point of view and say that he couldn't sing properly. I don't think Lemmy cared about technique or stuff like that, he was all emotion and heart and passion. That's the reason why we admire him and hold him in such high regard, a straight shooter definitely, we need more people like him. Great channel by the way.

Lemmy remains my favorite musician because he was uncompromising in so many ways. His voice didn't start out as the rough, gravelly thing made so famous by Motorhead; his songs in Hawkwind sound different because he isn't pushing his voice beyond its limits; some of the songs on the first Motorhead album are also like this. It must have done all kinds of permanent damage as later on, during the Lemmy documentary his voice was at times subtitled. God I miss knowing he's out there.

I'm not sure it's strictly correct to say he was doing it into his 70's as he died days after his 70th birthday. But 100% his energy was amazing and I truly miss him and Motörhead. RIP Lemmy

Lemmy didn't just play Rock 'N' Roll, he was the living embodiment of it. All 3 original members are gone now. R.I.P. to Fast Eddie, Philthy Animal, and, Lemmy.

Ha! Your Robert Plant story is hilarious, because the exact same thing happened to me, except I'm clearly not Robert Plant, although I did play in a few completely obscure punk bands in the 80s, but that's irrelevant to the story. years after I quit playing and I'd moved to Toronto, I was a regular at a local place called the Bovine Sex Club. I guess I LOOKED like I was in a band, that whole late 80s sort of punk/glam/goth variations on the Johnny Thunders theme with lots of leather and black hair and you get the idea. Anyway, what sounds like possibly the same gum chewing gold digger you saw in LA comes up to me all flirty and asks me something unintelligible. So I leaned closer to her, and said, "What?". She goes, "What band are you in?" and looked quite excited about which one it might be. So I said, "I'm not in a band", and she goes, "oh", turns and walks away exactly like Robert Plant girl. That's the day I realized exactly how shallow that whole scene was and walked away from it. Well, I know my story's not as great because it's always better when a guy from Led Zeppelin's in it, but it's the best I can do. and it's sort of comforting to know that the same thing happens to world famous rock superstars. Also, forgot to mention that I was lucky enough to see Motorhead in 82, one of their final shows with the original lineup, and yes, it was LOUD. Sounded like an airport with drums. It was brilliant.

I had bruised ribs for a month after watching Motörhead at Leicester University way back when, I got constantly slammed up against the barriers by the crowd behind, but I didn’t notice at the time! Too busy going nuts!

Lemmy a no compromise original that will never be replicated ever because most people would probably die during a single tour . The vocal technique would be pure punishment and something to think he was doing this and great amounts of drugs and drink until he passed at 70. What people tend to overlook is the mans Bass playing style was almost like a rhythm guitar . Lemmy's song writing was also overlooked beyond this career making song. Killed by Death and Eat the Rich I loved simply because those songs had some much humor to them while being Balls to the Wall. Then there was Mama I am coming home for Ozzy. Have to love Lemmy's on stage intro at the beginning of every show. "We are Motorhead and we play Rock and Roll " ROTFLMAO yes indeed Thanks Ken for yet another great video and some great stories

@@kentamplin Yes the story of Robert Plant at the Rainbow is way too funny. A late acquaintance of mine played with Robert Plant during the height of his solo recording career. Kevin MacMichael of the Cutting Crew "Died in your arms tonight" was their big song.
