I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 15 years and been singing since I was 16. I teach from my own studio and also teach and mentor via email, and online via Live & Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. Amy lee even says " wow" in a way like " Wtf is going on?". But we all know her vocal skills is very often impeccable and the band is always on point. But.. not in that day.

It wasn't the best performance of "My Immortal", the band was out of the key, you heard Amy saying "wow" at the end, you could see how upset she was and it's horrible that it happened at as important show as Billboard Music Awards while they were killing it at every other concert

They probably changed the strings right before performing. Which most likely lead to the guitars being out of tune.

She's such a good (live) vocalist. I've been to their concert last year and it was soooo amazing and her voice is so powerful and strong. You should watch a synthesis live perfomance it's so good

For that to happen on a stage as big as the Grammys had to be horrifying for poor Amy Lee, who did nothing wrong. She was on point, but the band, orchestra, and sound people blew it big time. How disappointed must she have been to be playing on a worldwide stage and have THAT happen?! Somebody was fired, for sure!

Haven't even started watching yet and I know what the wtf moment is. Iirc one of the guitars is in a different key. I love this performance up 'til the band joins in. I love Amy's' wow'. Amy only wrote the bridge for this song, Ben wrote the rest of the song for his grandfather.

Well diagnosed. The piano and orchestra were in tune but it was as if the guitarists (which I doubt are actual Evanescence bandmates) seem to have practiced to play in a different key. Its a serious lack of listening or ear training for them to think their chords would match. WTFm7

They are band members though, i think something happened with the instruments. As far as i know, sometimes musicians have a few guitars tuned for certain songs, and mix up happens, it happened before where Terry was given the wrong guitar for a song and was in a totally different key Amy was like 'WTF" while singing, they switched it back though quite fast.

I've seen this performance before and burst out laughing when you got excited about the band coming in knowing what a catastrophe it was going to be. Then after you were still trying to enjoy it😂😂😂

There was actually a lot wrong in that performance. Not only the guitars. IMO some of the piano's keys were out of tune. The violines were not in tune with the piano. Amy was a bit struggling to hold the tune. The guitars were the icing of the cake really.

What most likely happened there was just that the band got wrong instruments, happened before with Terry when he was handed the wrong guitar specifically tuned for a certain song. You can clearly hear how the technicians muted out the guitars, although it was a bit too late there. Although some people speculate that a couple of members sabotaged the performance cuz of the friction in the band at that time, but the ones that are usually mention for it - John and Rocky - left the band in 2007, from which only John was fired (according to him, and Rocky followed on his own will), so i dunno. Amy, though, did it like a boss here. I've heard her sing this live a couple of years ago, and she sounded amazing. Her vocals are so much more well rounded nowadays compared to this. But for some reason nobody really checks the new live stuff. Which is weird to me.

I'm a bit shocked you didn't mention how out of tune/flat her notes were in the first verse. At the end of each sentence the notes were just wrong. You said about her being out of breath but it was a glaring thing for me that she just didn't hit the right notes. Good video as usual though. Love an evanescence reaction video.

Out of tune and flat are 2different Things. She was little flat at beginning because she pushed too much Air. But it was Not Out of tune. U can sing notes flat but in tune aswell

@@Craigy2818 Exactly my thoughts. It seemed chaotic beforehand, which is why she seems to apologize for the scrambling. Before she even apologized she was likely nervous, thus crunching her breath support and causing a pitch "dropoff"

Definitely is a mistake of the band. They have to tune to the orchestra because there are some instruments which cannot be tuned so easily. Some of the brass instruments some of the wind instruments needs a hours of work of a specialist as same as a piano! But for the guitars is a several turns of the machine heads and on the keyboards is just several buttons. clicks.

The original song is in the key of A, but for some reason she played it in G#. Apparently, the bass and the guitars played it in the original key without noticing that Amy and the strings were a semitone lower.

At the last second her key board malfunctioned and she couldn't change it to the proper settings. She told the conductor and he switched the orchestra to match Amy's playing, but the rest of her band seemed to have not gotten the memo.

Okay so what happened is that the key was different on Amy's piano apparently. She saw it when she got on stage. The orchestra could adjust to the new key, but the band, who had no clue what happened just played like they were supposed to.

And you can see why none of them are in the band now. They were hacks. They surely could hear they were in the wrong key and stop playing would have been better than butchering it all through. My God it was bad. She never fired anyone. But after this she should have cleaned house instantly.

Amy is playing in the key she normally does. The key can't be different on the piano unless something has gone horribly wrong in the tuning process. An orchestra (no matter how talented) can't all just 'adjust' to a new key on stage. This issue is the guitar was tuned down.

@@kikkd She is actually playing a digital piano (you can see it when the camera goes around her). You could easily change it to a different key by only pressing a button.

Years and years - have a problem when recorded live. I've seen them IRL they sounded fantastic but RU-vid recordings etc really dont get ollys vocals properly. No idea why this keeps happening to them?. Can you review Olly Alexender to see if you can identify what's going on.

Yes she does, because the electric keyboard malfunctioned and wouldn't change keys, or something along those lines. The orchestra adjusted to the piano, but the guitars didn't and were out of tune.

What happened WAS the band was feuding at this time. This was around the time alterations to members were being done. Some bandmates were salty about it and purposely sabotaged this performance. Thankfully they are gone now. Out of all performances to do this at.. the Grammy’s. No wonder Amy was and looked so pissed.

I highly doubt that. Sabotaging a gig like this as a band member would be sabotaging your own career. Also, with Amy and the orchestra both doing a good gob, it makes you look like the idiot who plays the wrong guitar. Theres nothing to be gained from this fail.

This is not the only time it's happened. @7:08 you hear her laugh and say 'wow'... She knows that they messed up bad... If you want to see her sing it almost note perfect live that look for her performing it on the Jools Holland show... She's only slightly off on 2 notes near the beginning (again probably nerves or adrenalin adding some unintentional vibrato that soon goes after the first few bars)... That's the best version of this song. No rock guitars or drums. And, sang a bit slower with more power. It's by far and away the only version you need to listen to. It's on all my devices...

I dont know who send U Always those evanescence Video or other Videos from different singers. But they choose Most time their worst Performance😥. I SAW Amy Lee 2 Times live and soon 3 time. I love Amy Lee, I saw the band perform June 2018. It was 100 degrees that day, but I had chills (I have videos on my Chanel). This was back in 2004, Amy as come a long way vocally since then.

She didn't say "Sorry", she said "It's all right". The conductor probably said something like "our sheet is in a different tune" and she probably said "it's okay...it's all right" trying to say that she was able to adapt to the new tune, problem was, nobody told the bass player and guitar players and they played in the original tune only. I suppose...

That was my first thought too, as soon as you play the first note you realize that something is very wrong. A mediocre guitar player should just have stopped, i think a slightly better guitar player would have been able to simply change his chords to match in the dropped tuning.

@@TheAlja Yes exactly. I'm a guitarist as well and I don't know if I would be quick enough to transpose it, but if the guitars were dropped only a half step you'd just have to move everything up one fret. Maybe something was up with the in-ear monitors where they could not hear each other?

Yikes. At 5:39 the ENTIRE band seems off key. I know Amy thinks she IS the band, but she is not. There are NO original members left in this band EXCEPT Amy. That should say it all....

Well the real story is that they all play the song one semitone lower , and Terry , the guitarist , plays it in the original key... propably cause they ONLY perform it in the original key...We are all humans , so are they...Seen them 9 times since 2004 and they were Bloody Amazing...We are all allowed to make mistakes...She was never out of key..only the guitarist...

Someone actually pitched down the digital piano down a semitone just prior to the performance so both the guitars and orchestra had to deal with the piano and vocals in Ab/Fm rather than A/F#m as rehearsed.

Didn't the musician/ guitarist hear their own playing? Even amateur like me would be stop playing n just let amy and the rest of orchestra playing alone..or soundman could just turn the band sounds off? Poor amy 😭😭😭
