I was thinking the same thing when I watched this. I’ve never sat down and listened to a word for word comparison of the two versions but I listened to both versions more than once and didn’t think that Bobby Gentry’s original version varied much at all from Reba’s.

The official video will also give you chills. So much of her singing style is her natural Oklahoma accent, with a southern drawl. Even though it was written by the great storytelling singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry, Reba made it her own. That red dress made such an impact that people are still talking about to this day. BTW: With your red hair you'd look great in that dress too, Beth.

dude..finally, not the best video to hear her voice but I'm glad you understand how much additional effort it took to sing while basically acting the entire time, haha she's one of the few that come close to Dolly in talent, she's a phenom, multi-talented, did rodeo, had a hit tv show and films, has amazing duets, her music videos are some of the best out there, like mini-movies..it's crazy you gotta see her on stage singing with martina mcbride and a few others "On My Own", reba refuses to ever be outstaged, a very unique singer, she does everything with her voice, no one sings like she does

I saw Reba in the 90s. She changed outfits after every song, it seemed. She has such an incredible voice. "The Greatest Man I never Knew" is probably my favorite, but she had so many good ones.

She has had a long career in Country Music as well as on television with a couple of sitcoms. Perhaps listening to some other songs she has recorded would be something you can do in the future. She has a cover of "Cathy's Clown" and so many other songs SHe's a petite lady powerhouse as it seems many are. Martina McBride is another that comes to mind. Little ladies with huge voices.

Bobby Gentry wrote "Fancy" and these are the original lyrics. I don't think that Reba changed the lyrics to the song when she covered it. "But I couldn't see spendin' the rest of my life With my head hung down in shame. You know I mighta been born just plain white trash. But Fancy was my name."

Country might not be my go-to style of music, but I’m the first to admit there are some *god-tier* performers in the genre. Reba is one of them. Queen just isn’t good enough. The official video is like a little motion picture starring Reba as Fancy. It’s quite moving and haunting. 😊She’s wearing the outfit from the video. Written by Bobby Gentry who also wrote and sang The Ballad of Billy Joe. She’s going to be a coach on the next season of The Voice!

Bobbie Gentry is the original singer for this song she wrote it, and it was about her life. she came out with it in the 60s or 70s. And I love how Reba sing it she didn't change nothing.

If I recall correctly. Her big break, and I mean her discovery, came pretty early when she was still just a teenager. She was singing the national anthem at a rodeo and impressed the right people.

This is a cover of the beautiful singer songwriter, Bobby Gentry which is a more folksy version but that was popular in the late 60's-70's. I really like bobby Gentry's version as well.

I have never been to a Reba show but jf you have watched the award shows where she is a host or co-host you will notice she changes clothes a lot. She does even more so when she is concert.

I'd love to see your reaxtion to Emmy Lou Harris. She has the voice of an angel. Her performance of Pancho & Lefty at the Whistlestop is one of my favorites. I saw her perform in a small venue in the 80's. She sounded exactly like her albums.

The Queen of Country? Depends on who you ask. Reba? Dolly? Loretta? For my money the Queen is still Patsy Cline (and Bob Wills is still the King of Western Swing!). That said Reba is great, no doubt about it.
