Vocal Coach reacts to Rush singing Limelight 

It's hard to believe that three people can sound so incredible. They were one of the greatest bands for two generations.

This song was really personal to Neil Peart, who wrote the lyrics to 99% of all Rush songs. Neil really struggled with his fame. He was driven to be the best drummer he could possibly be, but he really didn’t like dealing with fans. He had a bit of a phobia when it came to meeting strange people. He shares that in the lyric in the second verse, “I can’t pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend”. Neil was a shy introvert, who liked reading. It made him uncomfortable when people gushed over him and he obviously found it impossible to put on an act as though they were his friends. Geddy and Alex used to do all of the meet and greet after the shows. They were both very social with a great sense of humor. Neil would typically sprint off stage and leap on his motorcycle, which he rode from city to city, following the tour. It worried Geddy and Alex a lot that something might happen to him on the way to a show, but Neil was Neil and nothing could change his way. This song’s lyrics speak volumes about his person. He was living in the Limelight, but was actually a quiet, reserved individual and the best drummer in rock and roll music (RIP professor).

Her enthusiasm is adorable, I mean that in the most respectful way. She’s great and obviously very knowledgeable.

I will go to my grave believing Moving Pictures is the best album of all time. Writing, musicianship, engineering... I have simply never heard anything like it. It's perfection.

And let us not ignore the transcendental awesomeness of Alex Lifeson...

Very nice reaction. Rush were famous for several reasons, but their ability to replicate studio recordings into flawless live performances set them above the rest. They cared more about being great musicians than being popular. Pretty damn rare in any era or genre.

You're experiencing the wonder of Rush that some of us started having 40 years ago. IMO, since you like the studio setting with the combined views of them performing, it's time to watch "Tom Sawyer" also done at LeStudio. Probably considered their "signature" song, although by no means the last one you'll want to hear.....their discography is huge. As always, RIP to The Professor.

When I was a young sailor stationed at Meridian Mississippi, my co-worker and friend Darren Karstensen was a HUGE RUSH fan. As he put it " In the world of Rock no three persons ever made SO MUCH SOUND". Tragically we lost Darren Mar 07, 1984...only 15 months after I first met him. It was many years later before I dabbled into listening to Rush music but I now understand Darren's comment, and fascination of/for the group.

You have to bear in mind too that he is singing someone else's lyrics & he & Neil had a great respect & understanding regarding that. Geddy always said that he had to understand what Neil was talking about so that he could sing with conviction. Also Neil was so without ego that he would re-write entire parts if Geddy felt it was necessary. A small insight into why they were able to work together & remain great friends for more than 40 years.

This has always been my favorite RUSH song. The intro grabs you, the lyrics give you a glimpse into the duality of being a brilliant performing act yet a shy individual, and the musical delivery is amazing. The drums are brilliant, captivating and precise, the guitar and bass work are stellar and Geddy's voice drives the emotion of the song to your heart. This song always made me appreciate that there are pros and cons to every avenue in life so do the best you can with the gifts you have and be thankful for your friends and experiences. The song still blows me away today, as much as it did when I first heard it in 1981.

Amazing how Geddy doesn't just sing but plays bass & keyboards too. What a multitasker ! The video was filmed at a recording studio outside of Montreal Canada called "Le Studio" which Rush has recorded there 6 times along with David Bowie, Celine Dion, Bryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan & Cat Stevens.

Thank you for this. As a music fan, but totally unskilled at any instrument, I love this breakdown. This is like watching a football coach go over the game and describe "because we see this, they're going to defend like that" and break down the plays. Love it. Keep rolling.

I'm thrilled that you're not one of those people that are turned off by his voice. A lot of people think it's grating. I would strongly suggest checking out a song from before this one called Cygnus x-1 where he hits his highest notes in any Rush song. Then you need to check out something from the 90s when his voice is starting to get lower. I suggest coldfire because he has a really cool chesty quality when he sings that lyric. Then you need to hear resist from the late 90s, then go a little further into the 2000s he really struggles at this point because he's now well into his 40s. I suggest a song named Driven. Then to his final album I highly recommend you check out the garden there's a section where he really does struggle with his falsetto but pulls it off. This song in my opinion was their best song ever and ironically their last song.

It's always great to see a new convert to RUSH 🙂. They are as you say extremely gifted talents that had an amazing career. Sadly, The Professor is no longer with us, but he and his brothers have left us with a treasure trove of music. I look forward to more of your analysis of all things RUSH. Great job!

Alas Neil has exited the stage for good. This piece has always moved me in the sense of his being so vulnerable in his discomfort with the limelight. Now it brings me to tears, but not in a negative way. A mix of gratefulness, sadness, respect.

When I think about it, it was really brave for us to cover this song at a music festival back in high school in 1987, which was clearly far from perfect, but at that time we were proud to be able to perform live in front of an audience.

I remember reading that Geddy’s vocal range spans over three octaves. RUSH wrote the epic “2112”, a multi-part 20+ minute piece that shows how expansive his range is and how he can change from the high end and amazingly switch down to the lower end.

I've always felt this song is an EXCELLENT example of how silence can be used as another virtual instrument in a song. This song uses a LOT of time signature changes and the use of "nothing" instrumental wise (while the vocals often continue) is masterful.

I've seen a lot of concerts and I was fortunate enough to see Rush live several times. They were the only band I ever saw that sounded exactly like they did on their albums every single time. Sure they added in some amazing solos and extended jams but the songs themselves were always played perfectly, just like on the albums. Truly an amazing band. Its really fun watching a newbie getting into the band. Welcome aboard!

It is a beautiful thing when I hear musicians discover Rush and deeply appreciate what they did. Another key element here were Neil Peart's (drummer) lyrics and how rhythmic it was allowing Geddy to articulate accordingly. Sometimes it was a challenge for Geddy to fit words within a particular measure given that Neil was an extremely literate and poetic writer. Pure genius band.

Next up, the medley of Broon's Bane/The Trees/Xanadu off of their live album "Exit...Stage Left". It is the tour that they did right after Moving Pictures and is a masterpiece.

Limelight has wonderful melody and is a technical work out. Very atmospheric and beautiful. A joy to hear it again.

So the more you dig into rush the more amazing individual songs you're going to find, and these are some of the tamest examples of Geddy Lee's range. No other group that I know of from that era has so many unique hits. Twilight Zone and A Passage to Bangkok really show-off his voice, but you can find another 10 much larger songs to really show off the groups mark on music history. They are getting a lot much recognition lately as our generation looks back for more unique sounds and they have it covered

Theses are 3 of the greatest musicians to ever grace the Earth. Neil the lyricist was arguably the best drummer ever, Geddy the singer, bassist and keyboardist is arguably one of the greatest bass players of all time, and Alex is a very underrated guitarist although good guitarists will tell you he is amazing.

I'm really enjoying your discovery of RUSH! A very beautiful song by them was the last song on their last album is called "The Garden". On that song you will hear how Geddy has evolved his voice over time. So, there would be some more technical interest for you there as well. So much to explore. Have fun!

Love seeing other music professionals giving props to Rush. Being a lifelong fan of theirs, I’ve always wondered if Geddy sought out any vocal coaching/training throughout their 40 year career. Regardless, his vocals are as big a part of the band as their musical abilities are. Would love for you to react to Entre Nous, Different Strings, Natural Science from the Permanent Waves album, as the early 80’s are his peak vocally IMO.

my favorite band of all time.....used to see them on the small venue tours in the Great Lakes area in the 70's, before they ever had a recording contract, and they were awesome then....Geddy would recognize places like Coral Gables, the Rafters, Crazy Horse in Southern Michigan

Your channel just popped up tonight. No wonder, one of my favorite bands of my youth. In 1976, friends and myself were walking around the Hammond civic center in Indiana. Rush was playing that night. We had no tickets. I guess we were just curious. All of a sudden a door pops open and some guy comes out and asks if we needed tickets. That night we sat off to the side of the stage and experienced Rush. 17 years old. By the time I was 20 I had invested about $2500 in a stereo system. A lot back then. Rush 2112 was my favorite album to play on it. I was in another world listening to them. Thank you for reconnecting me to Rush with your sincere excitement for them. I can still experience it.

After listening to them on radio and recorded media, I initially saw Rush in 1982 in ATL, and followed that up with another 7 shows through the years, culminating in their farewell tour. To say that I’m still enthralled by their music is an understatement.

Definitely "Red Barchetta" next. It reall has that chill vibe that is a cruising down the highway music. Geddy Lee is an amazing bass player as well as a totally unique singer.

Since the loss of Neil Peart, I haven't listened to Rush at all. But this brings it all back. I think I'm ready to get closer to the heart and enjoy this incredible music once again.

Being as well read as he is, he pulls from various books to bring his lyrics to life. This song was reflecting the bands amazement at how popularity can occur by being a rock band and how their music became so sought after, thus thrusting them into the Limelight! Rush is one of the most incredible bands to come from the 70s!

It's always wonderful witnessing someone who is just becoming aware of one of Progressive Rocks' (prog rock) greatest groups ever to grace the studio and stage. Not only do we have the one-of-a-kind voice of Geddy Lee, but we also have three absolutely consummate masters of their respective instruments. AND... if that wasn't enough, Neil Peart (their drummer who passed in 2020) was a truly gifted and published author (8 books); writing all the group's lyrics. Each song is a dive into wonderful and thought-provoking concepts; not one superficial glazed-over poem EVER, like SO much content in past and present music. This song's lyrics happen to be Neil Peart's look on his life as a world-renowned musician and artist who prefers to be away from the glitz, and much preferred being an inspiration to others as a whole, and not so much in-person... "...I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend."

The reason it is so refreshing is because "they are the band musicians like to watch" A large surprising piece of his voice is most male singers that go to a strong line backed with conviction usually have that gravel and low masculinity. Geddy has a higher tone naturally and a Canadian accent. These guys were childhood friends, love what they do and they each are considered the best at their instruments. I love watching you enjoy them.

Tom Sawyer is likely their best known song but they have a huge catalog to choose from. I'd suggest Xanadu, Subdivisions and maybe Fly By Night for a selection of their stuff

I have bee.n an avid RUSH fan since 2112. I first saw them in the early 80's and when I saw Geddy play the bass with left hand, play keyboards with left, play the foot pedals and sing at the same time! This is RUSH!!!

I love all the reactions from classical, music theater, and opera nerds. I went to music school for trumpet performance. But also play guitar and sing rock and roll. I learn something about singing pedagogy every time from you. You and the Charismatic Voice always make me smile. I am an old gen-x nerd, and you remind me of my daughters.

Rush do have a few ballads in their canon. To hear a different side to Geddy, I would recommend ‘Different Strings’ from 1980 or ‘Tears’ from 1976. Although these do not have accompanying videos, they are well worth the listen. I think you would enjoy. Nice reactions!!

A great analysis of the vocal, most excellent! Another primary component of the song is the guitar solo. It's such a unique, flexible piece of work and it matches the subject matter of the song perfectly. As I understand it producer Terry Brown put one of the amp cabinets outside the studio and used distantly placed mics to capture the echoes off of the surrounding mountains. Thank you so very very much, Rush was one of my favorite bands along with Aerosmith and Journey. I’m 62 now , the first time I saw Rush was back in 1976, I was 15. That’s the same year that my parents got me my first Strat. I’ve always been amazed by how people can write songs and music and then putting the arrangements together. Rush was so instrumental in my life. I cried for days when the Professor passed away. He became my favorite drummer after Keith moon died. I was lucky enough to see Rush nine times in my life. I would like to ask you a question. As a vocalist, do you appreciate music or singing even more because you are a vocalist? When I was nine my parents bought me my first acoustic guitar. I spent 5 years taking lessons on guitar, bass and drums. My guitar instructor Nick name me Jimi after Jimi Hendrix. I keep telling young people that they shouldn’t listen just to one kind of music and I tell them that they should go see has many performers as they can or want. Rock is my favorite but I’ve went and saw many performers. My first was Earth, wind and fire. I hope that you will appreciate this that I saw performers like Tony Bennett, Lou Rawls, Natalie Cole, Barbara Streisand, In 2007 my friend show me a dvd of Celtic Woman and have seen them 21 times now since 2008. Greatest band in the galaxy. Yet the rock and roll hall of fame SNUBBED them for 14 YEARS before finally inducting them in 2013.

One thing too to add on this: I have seen them live and there were no backround singers or any other than these three man on the big stage in hall that mounted about 10000 people... and except between the breaks of the songs, never heard as silent audience ever other than in classic conserts. In a sense maybe RUSH pushed the rock/progressive rock as close as it can be to be compared to classical music with only three people doing this in live??? And the wall of sound was massive. Their music is so tight that that is one of the reasons why people fell in love with this band and this band gradually from 70's raised it popularity in my home country( as we are a very small persent of the world and in some sense very small, but if there ever gonna be a war in Europe against those oppressions of the only possible direction ever ), we are at last with the right side of 'The Force'. But we have been ready for that for the year 1939 and twice stopped the invasion. Why I am saying this when talking about RUSH? Because, Neil Peart wanted to believe that someday human society and the world will evolve but that means also not just political changes but a change of hearts. This world has always been blocked to some coalitions and deeds accordingly, but in our modern world there are way more 'moving parts' that are unpredictable because we don't have ethical principales... the differences among religions or nationatilies are not the most important while we are still promoting as virtues??? What the ****... This is just what we know for certainty from the about 3000 years and how well this nationalism( only ) and separation of other people( making them non-belivers or wrong thinging political adversories has led to us??=) Has this served us at all... Or do we see hundreds millions people like everyone of us beeing murdered in wars( in last century ) even in side of societies in the worst case it's even inside you or even your family. If you have a LEGO model and those instructions how to build it correctly and the model may have even 10000 pieces... Who wants to after spending about 1000 dollars for the set, just try their luck without the instructions.. That is a very wise way to go, but unfortunately too many people think like this in all respects of their lives. Now we do have the most advanced technology up to this day and fast connections to reach anyone in just milli seconds, but nothing helps us if we can't really use the information and also understand both those so called minor things and the bigger things and also combine that. In physical world nothing is apart from anyting... It is a one big whole... thre is not even in science any way to separate things from each other like humans tend to do. And this has nothing to do with religion or believes. It is called logic and all claims both theoritical nad eperimental sciens is not proven until, it has passed the scientific minimal requirements, from which one of them is philosophical, the science that made us all to have cell phones and computers from the first place, if you didn't know this. It is based solely on logics from philosofhy, just making the differensence of a false statement or invalid argumentation that can sometimes been even taken as false from the presumrions let alone anything else. IF we dig deep enough there are only two possible outcome of everything: True or false aka 0 or 1 as it is in computers. We humans with philosophers found the truth when computers came to this world and they had to think how to structure the AI so that it will work as hoped. And if you are also studied pcyhology along with these others... man or woman... you are screwed. Even the most talented( in IQ ) psychopaths will fail almost every time in these test as they are ment to be tricky and ment to be seeing where you are telling the truth and where you are lying. The one thing that unfortunately follows you for the rest of your life is, that even though no one, and I mean NO ONE can ever again lie to you if you are smart enough, the down side is this, that the more you understand the more you may become involved and in personal life, if you are a man, you may lose you temper during of the first sentense, that you find untrue. It is a double edged sword. And even more so it goes with liying women too. If someone puts his or hers most effort to ensure you but tells you a bunch of lies and everyting is just a lie, it is not just hurtful, but it is always at the same time underestimate you which is even worse.

I think it was around this time when you already had Permanent Waves (1980) just released, with the cusp of Moving Pictures(1981) coming out, Exit Stage Left (live show), and Signals (1982) when Geddys voice started to change/develop into something real beautiful. His voice wasn't sheer perfection early in the bands history. Some thought his voice was too high like a screeching cat and it definitely was a voice you had to get used to and work your ears around. I bought my first album All the Worlds a Stage in 1976, and I was blown away, but it took me a while to warm up to Geddys voice. As it matured, developed and deepened through the years it just took the band to a whole new level of amazement. There's just so much material you can listen to from them and never not be in awe what they did for over 40+ years.

I've been a fan of Rush since a friend introduced me to them by playing Working Man. I was able to see Rush twice in concert. The musicianship and lyrics have always been amazing. I once heard Rush described as a thinking man's rock and roll, and I agree. Excellent job Bethany! I'm a newer sub to your channel and am really enjoying it.

Fell down the wormhole at my high school before Summer of ‘75 when we saw what we thought was just another Fly by Night band. We were only 13 years old but…. We knew this band was definitely captivating. They could go somewhere.

Geddy Lee's vocal range changed considerably over the years. Your first reaction for Closer To The Heart was mid 70's, where his vocal range was incredibly high. This 2nd reaction is from the Moving Pictures album from 1981 & his vocals, whilst still in the high register, is much mellowed. I'd recommend the song A Farewell To Kings from the album of the same name. It's much closer to what you heard from Closer To The Heart, from the same album. If you want super crazy first generation vocals from Geddy Lee, you could try Anthem, or literally anything from their first album called, simply, Rush.

Geddy's voice had mellowed a bit by this point in their career. He wasn't singing those crazy high lines like he did back on the first three or four albums. Vital Signs is another great song on the Moving Pictures album you might like. Or if you want to hear more of the earlier stuff, check out Anthem off of Fly By Night.

I'm a Canadian whose high school years were 1977 to 1983, which was when Rush was still was in their up and coming period. I was lucky enough to see them 3 times: in 1984/86/90. "Cygnus X-1: The Voyage" would be one I'd recommend. Many different aspects of Mr. Lee's singing happen on this one and you'll find it really trippy. Be well. I like'em. Been long time. The one time Rush came to Cal Expo for an outdoor summer concert I missed out on getting tickets. So, I walked across the boulevard and stood outside the concert gate to listen to the music and the fans cheering after each performance. I could see the stage lights, but not the stage. Still, pretty awesome. My girlfriend was a music writer with features on rock and metal bands. A few days later she called the bands manager and was able to get a phone interview. I could hear her asking questions and giggling now and then. And, of course she thanked them for taking the time. Felt like I was outside the gate listening to her talk to them. Never forget that. Definitely one of my top 10 bands.,🎸

I especially love anything from the 1981 tour (for the album this song is on), not only because I got to see them on that tour in high school, but I believe it is Rush at their peak-prime, and the show had a really warm feel to it; also, Geddy's at his best vocally. Geddy Lee is a rare bird, his unmistakable voice, instramental virtuosity, and writing the music (Neil Peart wrote their lyrics) I'm so grateful having seen them live multiple times. I glad you found them too, Ms. Hickman

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
