Hello Singderellos,
In this video, I react for the first time to the band Tool performing ‘Sober’. In this video, I analyse Maynard James Keenan's magnificent performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.Tool is an absolutely iconic band, especially in the progressive rock / metal music scene and this will be one of many Tool songs I react to!

This song was written about a close friend who suffered drug addiction but while high his artwork found a very different level, it is a poem of both the torment and enlightenment the mind goes through when high and/or coming down, Maynard not only wished to vocally capture the torment of addiction but visually display it too, anyone who has seen a crack addict in real life may recognise the distinctive contortionist moves he displays... for many this is just a historic song for some this is a much deeper performance, a piece of art on another level just like his friend made.

Do u know the band personally??? I know this is the wikipedia backstory but come on, maybe lyrically written about said friend, but certainly not musically.

@@7empest262 one of the band did an interview back in the days, I recall reading it and yes maybe wiki may support that but I didn't get it from wiki, I grew up to music and have been in bands myself albeit local ones so music has a strong influence on me and I was in my late teens when Sober was out. I can only say it is what I recollect of reading about the origins of the song and his strange moves, take it with a pinch of salt by all means but he did consider himself not only as a vocalist but an artist too.

As poetry it has a wider meaning. I've never been an addict but I can relate to the lyrics in many aspects, as a person with emotional, depressive issues.

He’s said that someone close could only write or perform while under the influence or at least needed it in their own mind to be creative musically. Needless to say Maynard wasn’t a fan of this.

I have always agreed with the idea that his posture is part of the performance, evoking an addict in the throes of withdrawal. Also, with Maynard's anxiety issues, he usually picks a point or person he feels comfortable looking at on stage... imagine being the person he stared at as he belted out this song, eyes just boring through you. Maybe check out A Perfect Circle, Judith.

I bought my first Tool CD many moons ago and as I was driving home listening to it I started to cry. I couldn't understand every word (at the time) but the meaning and emotion was conveyed perfectly. MJK is kind of a miracle; in that he shares himself, his ideas, his thoughts, and his memories by creating a bridge from his pain to ours. It is a unique language shared by souls.

Sorry for your loss. I am highly reluctant to touch this for fear of harm on you, but will make an exception. They are a very deep feeling band in thought and highly technical. They rarely posted their lyrics if ever, they wanted their music interpreted by the individual listener. It is up to you to decide what they meant. In any case this is a very emotional song performed brilliantly. I too have an emotional link to it.

"Authentic expression [...] is essential to comprise a good vocal performance" - no truer words have ever been spoken. This is why artists like Maynard, Yebba and Aurora will always reach in and grab you by the .. uh.. vulnerables and hit you right in the feels, whereas a technically perfect performer like Dimash might not.

Oh man....So I was just finishing my 6 year degree in University when a friend of mine asked if I wanted to go to a metal concert to see Maynard. I was already in the car honking the horn, like "Duh, yea of course I want to f'ing go, lets move!" I never, in my wildest dreams thought we'd be witnessing history. I personally feel, this is Maynards best performance ever. It's like he tapped into the old gods and personified Cthulu on stage. His stare literally melted brains in the first 3 rows and his vocals drove the rest of us into insanity. I think the term I am looking for is visceral. I literally stood there just staring at the stage for I dont know how long afterwards. Could have been 5 minutes, could have been 15 *shrug*, trying to comprehend what I had just witnessed. It was one of the most intense performances I've witnessed until I went to see Nightwish at Wacken 2013. Luv your work miss, and taking it this far back that only those of us old geezers would have seen it live is just heart warming. Dont let the greats die, keep us all alive in your reactions !!

They are so much better live then the studio recordings, not necessarily because they play differently but rather because you can see the embodiment of their music as they preform. The human connection is stronger live. I've only been able to see them once at Coachella in 2006 right before 10000 Days came out and it is still the best live show I've ever been to. See them live, and if you haven't already check out Maynard's side projects A Perfect Circle and the group Puscifer. Both are incredible in their own right 💗

Step further down the rabbit hole. Listen to Carina's solo work. She's so underrated. I don't think a "reactor" has given her a chance yet. "On Leaving", "Let it Fall", "Slow Motion Addict", "Do You", "For Everything a Reason", you can't miss. She has a vast range of styles from heavier like "Sober" to very emotive like "10,000 days". I will say keep Tool in mind though, remember we didn't fall in love with every song on first listen, and some felt like they took forever to finally build to the good part. "On Leaving" is a good example of that, beginning is a bit slow, but about half way in you get slapped in the face and you can't stop grooving.

Hello again, FVM. I've never listened to anything by Tool. I watched this because it's by you. Thanks for reacting to it. It's relevant to my life. Knowing nothing about the singer at all, I can't precisely judge whether or not he's singing about his own experience or someone else's. However, as a recovered alcoholic myself, sober for 30 years now (after drinking for 23 years [after not drinking for 13 years]), I do have room to say he certainly sounds authentic, and further, speaking as a linguist now, authentic in ways that aren't easily just an act. For your personal emotional benefit, I would like to say that the level of despair he depicts isn't necessarily a permanent fixture of an alcoholic life. We **can** just be sober, all that pain can be healed in time, and all those questions can be answered, if we know where to look. Thanks again for this reaction. Maybe I'll listen to some Tool now. I've seen them many many times over the years, most recently earlier this year in Tampa Florida. I was fully prepared to be very forgiving as a listener, as the band members aren't exactly 25 years old anymore. I was excited for sure, but made sure I tempered my expectations ahead of time. Then they performed Hooker with a Penis. To say that I was silly for thinking I needed to give them an OUNCE of forgiveness was an understatement. Maynard, Danny, Adam, and Justin were utterly flawless, and it was up there with the best performance I have ever seen in my life. So your comment rang very true with me.

I think the aspect I enjoyed the most about watching this reaction, above all the other multitudes of reaction vids I’ve consumed, is seeing the genuine emotion of a fan seeing a live Tool performance for the first time and re-living those exact memories and feelings of my first Tool concert. There’s the excitement, almost-childish giddiness, emotional connection to the point of being overwhelmed to tears for no real reason at all other than being part of the communal sense of awe and release of energy, and then pure appreciation and thankfulness.

Yuuuuuuuuuuuup! I first watched this performance back when I was in high school about 18 or so years ago. I was FLOORED when I first watched this. It's so damn great! Really happy that you enjoyed it. :) If/when I have ideas, I'll hop on back and suggest them. :)

So I asked my son, "Have you heard of the band Tool ?" His answer," of course !. haven't you?" Never ! So thanks, great lead singer and talented group. Your genuine excitement is contagious. You are the best !! Don't wish to hijack this reaction but we need more Lolli Wren performances and this from Morissette Amon ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p2FXQgtmPDw.html.

This is a rare performance in which you can actually see MJK easily. At some point (definitely before Lateralus. Maybe before Arena?) he began standing back beside the drum kit, out of the lights.

After 25 years of both U.S Military service and PMC, much of which I was heavily drinking to forget the day, I got Sober in 2011. This song is addiction, literally for me what it was like day after day. Promising deliverance only to leave you further behind. Addiction robs us.

Love all of your videos (I sing in an a cappella group myself and just recently performed the Pentatonix arrangement of Hallelujah) - but really love that you are covering some more "alternative" vocal artists. Two suggestions in that vein.... Mike Patton from Faith No More (the live video from 1997 Phoenix Festival - searchable on RU-vid - has a wide range of songs and performances; Ashes to Ashes is a fave, but also more melodic stuff like Easy and I Started a Joke). Second is Eric Nally from a (relatively) obscure (but loved!) American band called Foxy Shazam (I always loved the song Killin' It). Very dramatic singers with some impressive if unusual chops. Keep up the amazing videos and your passion for the voice - it's infectious!!

you MUUUUST check out the live version of "Jerk-Off" from 10.10.99. Its so insane you'll love it! Also, it features his best live recorded scream imo, and the best way to end a concert ever.

You are an information Goddess! Stumbled across you on a Jinger deep dive and have subscribed ever since. I don't sing... I don't know anything about music theory...but after I watch a break down of yours I feel like I have the clues to recognize some of the hidden, driving components that lead me to come back and listen again... and again. IMO you are building an audience that people like Elizabeth at The Charismatic Voice, or Julia Nilon have come to represent. Keep up the good work, I'll do what I can to spread the word.

Perfect analysis...had to subscribe after this, tho I am a regular watcher. As an alcoholic waste of space I totally relate to his pain and lyrics in this song, purely coz he doesn't say this in an "I feel sorry for myself" type of questioning...he is honestly asking the reality of the situation, what makes me so...unable? :/ Regardless, great reaction...you got a sub. X
