A personal symptom of long time lack of vocal fold closure and overuse of vocal folds is disruption of air flow through the whole body. For me, it triggers a panic state if I don’t slow down and just sigh and breath and relax like you’re showing around 10min. Air will then build up in the lungs and become stagnant. I’ll feel bloated and tense in my throat. And the gastro issues it creates are not related to a separate issue like many western doctors would assume. (Then sending you on a journey with a gastro doctor and them finding no issues, leaving everyone perplexed.) It’s very vagus nerve, nerve in general related! I wanted to share this because I feel this may not be a common symptom for a lot of people. But if you feel like you have air stuck in your belly along with tension from MTD, accompanied by low pack pain when you try to take a breathe and feel like you aren’t getting a strong breath, the root issue to all those annoying and painful things may in fact be chronic lack of vocal fold closure. And if you stay at this point you continue to pull in too much air, reinforcing tension, and even though you’re breathing with all your might, your vocal folds aren’t closing all the way so it’s leaving you winded and weak and using all the wrong muscles! It’s a vicious cycle that I hope nobody else has to go through. But if this is you, you can find balance in the breath and nervous system, and Liz is super helpful on this journey! Listen to your body, relax, and listen to Liz! ❤😊

Liz, can locking or holding your breath cause MTD-type tension in the throat?

Hmm this is a tough one. I would say yes, and no. If you watch this video, I do talk about some of the exercises, feeling almost like you’re holding your breath which shouldn’t create more tension.. but if you are holding your breath throughout your day and not feeling safe and relaxed in your body throughout the day, it can create more tension. So if that’s the case work on feeling more present and relaxed and safe in your body and life. Also, keep in mind that sometimes we do have some tension when we are building muscle in singing exercises so that’s OK and it will subside with time. When doing vocal exercises work on body awareness. Work on relaxing neck, shoulders, face when singing.
