Vocal resonance for singers

Voice projection is important for singers. This video helps all singers to manage vocal resonance regareless of style and period. It explains the relationship between voice range and location of resonance including description of passaggio.
For those who wrote negatively about this video: (wise up, don't just shoot from the hip)
Thank you for your critics. I am glad I am not perfect in your sight, which is true. Please read a short selected reference bibliography (below at the bottom:- I speak from extensive study and experience) to discover your ignorance and arrogance. (a dangerous combination.)
I started as an instrumentalist playing violin, trumpet and cello. I own and play four saxes, play Euphonium, trombone, the electric bass and directed Jazz orchestras. I can certainly say I am experienced in performing and directing many styles and periods of music. Most of my solo voice students sing pop. My students perform classical as well as pop, some professionally.
1. I put this video up for my vioice students in college. You are a only a guest.
2. I have taught solo voice, as a tenured professor, for over 40 years at the college level and privately in my studio. I was a young and ignorant professor forty years ago. But after forty years I have read a lot of materials and learned a lot for which I am thankful.
3. I directed choruses since 1966 and learned from doing it too. I have directed numerous Jazz, pop and broadway shows.
4. I had great teachers who opened my mind towards voice pedagogy. I have had many great opportunities for professional developments, paid by my employer at a community college.
5. Most importantly, I am not showing-off, though I have earned to do so. I do most of my work for my students. (They all got DVDs of their singing and my coaching after each coaching session)
I am afraid some unfriendly critics (only three, so far) may have been motivated by racism because I am not white or just blind attack out of innorance and/or jealousy, which is unnecessary. Hay, if you understand what I taught in this video, you would be able reap the great result of having this knowledge to benefit yourself. I charge a lot for doing master classes teaching voice using this proven and scientific technique. Go use my technique and make your bucks. This video is free of charge anyways. I have read a lot and experienced a lot so you could shorten your period of learning and use it without having to claim that you learned it from me. Am I throwing pearls before swine?
Bibliography: (read about these authors on the web too!!)
1. William Vennard: "Singing, the Mechanism and the Technic:
2. Richard Miller: "On The Art of Singing"
3. Richard Alderson: "Complete Handbook of Voice Training"
4. D. Ralph Appelman: "The Science of Vocal Pedagogy"
5. Many publications and transcriptions of scientific/medical research from The Voice Foundation conferences and Symposiums
Thanks for reading and watching my video. You are welcome.
Sincerely.
J

Sorry to hear you've received negative comments on this marvelous effort of yours. I found your combination of information and demonstration, and the particular personal manner in which you presented it, incredibly helpful in making clear a number of complex concepts that I previously had trouble getting my head around, and this is precisely the topic I needed addressed at my current stage of development. Thus, I'm grateful to you. I couldn't be happier that I found your channel. I wish you great success in your work (and elsewhere, while I'm at it). Thank you for this wonderfully helpful video. Cheers.

Hello Mr Law, I have worked with 40-50 singers who sing in a pop style, and I sing in that style too, and what you said about pop is basically true. I guess those who are unfamiliar with the inside workings of pop have crtiticised you for slamming on pop stars because they aren't aware of what really happens behind the scenes. Coming from my experience, I did not take your video as criticism but as inspiration to perfect my craft and an accurate reflection of what occurs with >95% of upcoming pop singers. I appreciate your time and generosity in sharing this video, although intended for your students, with the world and wider community. I have learned from this video, thank you, and I'm sure many around the world have been impacted. Keep up the good work in San Fran, maybe we will cross paths one day. JL - Australia

I attended a local voice lesson after watching/applying Joshua Law's techniques on resonance. I had a head cold and didn't feel good, yet my voice teacher, a highly qualified professor who teaches at a conservatory, seemed amazed at how my resonance had improved. It was the biggest breakthrough I've had in 15 months. Kudos to Prof. Law!

I'm so glad to see this video. You were my teacher way back when and were great then too! I learned the most from you out of any vocal teacher I ever had. I stopped singing a while back due to some trauma and just now getting back so was just looking up stuff on the web and typed in your name and low and behold, you are still at it! KUDOS!! and Thanks so much for posting these helpful videos!

This teacher is amazing...In one full sweep he just explained all the stages you should be aware of if you are to achieve correct and smooth connection from top to bottom of your vocal range,most singers over look the details and end up in vocal trouble sooner or later.A hand full of serious singers gave this man a listen to their benefit.

Thank you so much for this video!! I'm a woman studying classical singing and I was on the search of further insight of the concept "sing in the mask", because it seems I tend to sing too much in the back of my head, which leads me to lose air in the process, according to my teacher who is a soprano. So your explanation has really helped me! I will do these exercises and really focus on singing more forward than backward.

Does the head voice equals sinus resonance or hard palate resonance? If I understood, lower and midle registers are to be in the soft palate, upper register in the hard palate, so the singer consciously made the shift. As the singer goes up in the register, from the hard palate activates de sinus as well, am I correct? Great video thank you!
@aznbryanc
@aznbryanc 6 лет назад
I know this is very late, but this response may help other students and singers. After studying the Bel Canto method for a while now, yes, it does climb up toward sinus and hard palate resonance as you describe. I think Salvatore Fisichella's interview where he describes this was a very useful functional adjunct to Dr. Law's explanations. :) Excerpt: JL: What do you think of appoggio into the mask? SF: As I explained before, appoggio (leaning) into the mask is imaginary, a matter of speech. The appoggio (leaning) of the voice is always global and simultaneous in the various resonance chambers. Depending on the height of the pitch one uses one chamber rather than another. As an example to understand better: in the first octave on uses 60% of chest, 25% Nasal (sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses) and Maxillary Cavities, and 15% Frontal and Occipital areas. In the middle voice one would use 60% of the Nasal-Maxillary, 20% Chest, and 20% Frontal and Occipital areas. In the high notes, 60% of the note would go to the Frontal and Occipital cavities, 30% to the Nasal-Maxillary spaces, and 10% to the Chest. The boundaries are not so exact as numbers may be, but all happens in proportions as directed by instinct and mechanism, and dependant on the skills and natural structure of the individual. Source: tenortalkblog.wordpress.com/2010/10/22/interview-with-great-sicilian-tenor-salvatore-fisichella/
