The Vogum 2024 Ultra Marathon goes from Porthcawl to Penarth, covering 40 miles of the Welsh Coastal Path.
220 people had entered this event and with the weather becoming warmer through the day it was going to be a long day in the sun... food, water and salt tablets would be key to doing well in this event....all I thought I'd had down....but did i really?
Meeting fellow slammers and people who had done a 200 mile run the week before truly inspired me to try my best and enjoy the day... Carl is an absolute machine and a true inspiration for anyone wanting to run, you could do far worse than looking at Carl.
7am start and we were off along the sand dunes, around Merthyr Mawr and onto Ogmore stepping stones, then CP1... then an up and down section along the coastal path to CP2...felt good here and had a lovely Vegan Ice-cream bought for me at this CP....
then onto CP3 the dreaded PowerStation part, hot, muggy, humid and didn't help I got the Cp distance wrong, which meant I drank my drink too early and suffered until the end of the race...school boy error.
CP3 done, cramp in the shoulder and a massage from Carl...then road shoes were on and it felt better to run again, until my lack of quality salt intake took hold and cramps started to form... slowing me down big time...
Anyway, we dug in and got to CP4 and back onto the coastal path... and onto the finish where a warm welcome was had and lots of support as runners were coming in.
truly a great sight to see others coming in and cheering them across the line.
