Yes! I agree completely! The Episode 1 and Battlefront 2 droid voices are my favorites. As you say they sound like capable, cold, deadly killing machines, and not just comic relief. Yes they are machines, and that gives them some strengths in combat. They have no emotions, and so they cannot be struck by fear, and will not hesitate to kill the enemy. They also can appear intimidating due to their lack of emotion, and lack of morality and personality. I can accept that they speak, are able to yell and such, as that to me fits into the Star Wars universe. But when they get these cartoony voices and act like bumbling idiots, that ruins the cool parts about the droids. Having competent and deadly battle droids also makes it seem like the Republic truly was fighting an uphill struggle against the CIS. And on another note, I always think it's important how things sound. In movies and media I mean. How movie guns sound, how the droids sound, how my guitar effects sound. It's all important and really builds the universe and the immersion in what you're seeing. If things sound a certain way, they can help you get immersed into what you're seeing.

I like to think that they speak differently afterwards because they are programmed to be faster, without the need for the capital ship for control. So like in games where the physics are tied with the framerate so the faster they are processing the faster and higher pitched they speak.

​​​​@@LUR1FAX the older models had not much to think, they were controlled by a central computer, kind of a hive mind. In later movies, instead, they reprogrammed them to avoid the fiasco of Naboo battle making them independent when disconnected. The problem it's the fact they were originally programmed just to be guards or sentinels that mostly stand and see, not to be ground soldiers that have to move and recognize territory. They're used this second way because, compared to B2 or other units which were made for combat, are stupidly cheap. They also lacked of proper maintenance to save costs and avoid wiping their data when were programmed for special purposes (at least that was stated in official comics, once canon, not sure nowadays). To me it makes sense they were gradually becoming more incompetent, because you're oversaturating robots of different works and such without giving them proper maintenance. The Separatists most of the time were running with limited resources, so if they can make the things cheaper they do, and B1 were the most affected by far, making them even pilot ships. I mean, if a regular computer glitches and make weird things if you don't wipe part of the data it's kinda reasonable the B1 could become gradually more and more goofy, hence of why they sound cartoonish in Clone Wars CGI series.

Most games do that. If they said the same line over and over again it'd get boring really quick, but if they change the tone of voice at least once it makes it feel not too repetitive. That's why the roger roger line has the most variations. You hear it everywhere and lots of times!

Sound modulators would be falty due to ware and also the thing the voice goes through at the front of them would make the noise aswell

episode 2 and 3 are pretty much the same as the clone wars though, episode 1 is really the only movie where they had “cool” voices

@@monochrome_soft9472 Episode 2!? Are you deaf? The only time the Jar Jar Droids were in the Movies was in Episode 3, and only during the Battle of Coruscant. Afterwards they didn't say anything, which tells me a lot about how the Team thought about the Droid change.

It's pretty obnoxious how a lot of SW fans seem to have the "serious = better" mindset about a franchise for children lol Same thing goes for 2003 Grievous fans. He has the most cookie cutter personality in that show, you could swap him out for any generic sith lord and the lines would be completely interchangeable. Being "cool" and "serious" is apparently more important than being memorable and fun to watch.

Topaz 616 agreed. The super battle droids make sense for being deep and intimidating. Plus, as was mentioned before, it gives them more personality, and I rather they be the comic relief instead of some shit like Jar-Jar.

Only droids that don't get routine memory wipes develop strong personality traits.

I cringe kind of easily-but I don't express it like Internet denizens-and I didn't cringe at all to the newer droid voices, so I guess I negate your assessment of these voices.

Just opinions I guess. I don't "literally" cringe, I was just using expressive wording to show my utter distaste for what they did to the battle droids, lol. It just annoys me. I find it cringe as in the "cringy* context. They made them too "kiddie" and similar to what they did to General Grevious in making him lame and cowardly when he was fearsome in the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon. I also hate what they did to the droids in that.. it's just illogical in multiple ways, droids talking about promotions and army jobs, chores and punishments, etc... too much persona and humanity to them in what was orginally just a pre-programmed, deployed killing machine (which included pre-set ranks and models for each job) that struggled with human interaction (due to not having protocol/human cyborg relation functions) giving way to the "odd quirky line" but was not OTT. Nothing makes sense with the animated CW and ROTS droids, and goes against the entire premise of "why" you'd have a droid army in the first place. In that you don't need to train, promote, comfort, dicipline, punish etc. The reason people had battledroids is that you could just take them out the box and they are good to go and are efficient for the job they are programmed for (whether that be cleaning, repair, combat, commanding.. etc) and don't think about anything else. But they just made them unthreatneing, annoying, bumbling clowns that nobody in their right mind would mass produce for war.

Wow, that's a surprisingly long response. On a side note, I want to say that it's really strange to say "cringe" when you don't actually cringe from second-hand embarrassment, and I think it's pretty rude to categorize an entire collection of behaviors as "cringy." I appreciate your clarification on that, but those are just my thoughts on concept. Anyway, I agree with pretty much your entire assessment. I'm able to accept the quirky droids, _especially_ those in "Revenge of the Sith," because I like their aesthetic and they can be effective threatening when they need to be. Also, I think I was misinterpreting your opinion because you were saying that they make you (strongly) cringe, which would be a rather weird reaction.

Honestly I'm not a fan of the generic robot voices. They don't have as much personality with those voices rather than in the clone wars.

@@topaz6995 They aren't supposed to have personalities. They are droids created solely as disposable soldiers. A droid like C-3PO? Sure. They are supposed to be cultural and lingual interpreters who can make peace with both sides. Battle droids should not be like that.

The Phantom Menace had everything but a good inflection. I like the sound of it, but the direction of the voice actor is crap. Republic commando had voices that well suited it's gritty tone, and battlefront did them proper justice.

@Confederate Fleet becauae DICE went with what's popular when it came down to canon media, hence why all prequel characters were voiced by TCW voice actors, all clones were voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, even though they got Morrison into voicing Jango and Boba Fett

When i first saw the Commando droids in TCW I thought they were these droids. But these are just standard B1s.

Because George wanted comedy but got rid of the people that told him no- which resulted in Episode 2 and 3 having increasingly bad acting direction- let alone the fact that it gave Filoni an opportunity to put his foot in the door.
