Everyone keeps wanting to know what I think of the remixing of the Entire FFX sound track to include the Tidus Laugh... Here's my response. ; ) Please SUBSCRIBE!
Omg @Dansg08, i noticed your username right away. I love your videos so much. You're insanely knowledgeable and intelligent in general. Thanks for helping me a lot in FFX.
The laugh scene was supposed to be lame and silly. That is why the rest of the party was behind them like: "What the fuck is wrong with these two!?" because this scene was about stop being obsessed with responsibility and trying to please everyone (Yuna) and about letting go, letting go even if you make a fool of yourself.
This guy has such a great sense of humor and one of the nicest actors I've ever met. When everybody was camped out to see George Lucas at Star Wars Celebration V, he and another voice actor came out and took pictures with us, signed autographs and gave us an a nice up when most of the night was down.
What a lot of people fail to comprehend (or perhaps they do and simply don't care) is that there were 3 laughs. At first Tidus gave off embarrassed/nervous laughter because the though of randomly laughing out loud felt awkward to him (and rightly so considering the entire internet unites in mocking his character afterwards) The second was the infamous FORCED laugh, emphasis on FORCED. Lastly after they realize how foolish the entire thing was, they laugh for real.
You have completely owned everyone who ever trolled Tidus's laugh with the ultimate troll of your own. I salute you sir. You have won yourself a new admirer.
@@JATactor you earned the master of trolling for a reason while matt lanter is the master at getting caught lol (if any of you get the reference you are awesome)
I've never understood everyone's issue with Tidus' laugh. He (Tidus) does it as a stupid thing to cheer Yuna up. Something your friend would do, assuming ya'll have friends that is.
From what I understand people don´t really have an issue with it. Most everyone understands it was meant to be goofy and awkward, because Tidus laughs times before and after, hell, he laughs immediately after the awkward laugh. It just ends up being funny, because it sounds really, really awkward, which funnily enough is actually a compliment for Mr. Taylor, considering he did a damn good job at sounding like that.
People understand it but that doesn't mean the execution for that scene was good. The writing and the point its trying to make was good but the execution came off poorly with the situation they were in.
James is definitely up there with some of the best. I'd put him right up there alongside the likes of Rob Paulsen, Tara Strong, Jim Cummings, Troy Baker, Tony Jay, Paul Winchell, Maurice LaMarche and other immensely talented voice actors. Plus, James does a KILLER Christopher Walken and Gilbert Gottfried!
JAT=best impressionist/voice double. Period. However, as much as I love Troy, I wouldn't quite put him up there with those *legends* just quite yet. Especially Jim frickin Cummings.
Jake Painter Yuri Lowenthal. Also, Kevin Michael Richardson who voices Lewis, is an *insanely* talented VA that does every "large bass voice" in US cartoons. I wish he would do an anime or two, but unfortunately he's far far too expensive.
Same. Earlier in the game he had let loose a cathartic scream, and the negative emotions continued to build up inside him anyway. So then when Yuna asks, "Wanna scream?" he acknowledges the futility in doing so. Forcing a laugh when you feel like screaming really hit home for me, and I think the voice acting nailed how that's supposed to sound.
It seems to me like most people that makes fun of this does not even understand that the laughter was supposed to sound weird and funny on purpose and thinks the voice actors did a terrible job.
I love these kind of old 3D platformers where you explore big worlds and collect stuff and its way more fun than platformers where your just supposed to get from point A to point B in my opinion so i dont understand why many people seems to find it boring nowadays and dont want these games anymore.
You know, the dub laugh was actually fitting and was a pretty good piece of voice acting. But if people didn't think it was bad, then we wouldn't get such amazing memes
Yeah, the voice acting is outstanding. I just didn't like Tidus as a character. And that moment was very cringy (yet very well done from a voice acting perspective).
@@BrianOfAteionas Tidus is a great character though. He is a genuine first world brat with daddy issues and a lot of the people who have problems with him act just like him ironically. On top of that, he was the exact kind of change in mentality that the world of Spira needed in order to change on its own, in addition to being a very well constructed narrative tool with which to introduce us the player to the overworld. All of the exposition feels natural because Tidus is just as clueless as we are. In fact, I'd say he was the perfect method of easing us into the world of Spira because he essentially was a first world kid from a high tech city. It was great break from the usual angsty badass that other games would toss you in with.
It's not a very complicated or nuanced scene. Being intentionally awkward doesn't absolve the writing from being bad. You can both understand the scene and also think it's bad. Ramsay Bolton was written and acted brilliantly but he will never be remembered this way. Even if the performance was impeccable he will only be remembered as a bad character because this is the only allowance the writing made for. I don't think people blame James Arnold Taylor's performance for this scene. It's just poorly written.
People just like to hate on Tidus. They claim Cloud and Squall are too emo, then Tidus shows up happy and energetic and people trash him. The laughing scene was beautiful. The game is amazing. I've played through at least 5 times. JAT is very talented and performed Tidus beautifully, I wouldn't change a thing. Best game ever!!!
I don't think Tidus being happy has much to do with it. Also, all the emo cloud things are about the compilation of FF7 content. cloud spent half of FF7 being a cocky jerk. Squall is a little harder to pin down, but I'd imagine I'd be a moody jerk if I had to deal with irritating idiots like Zell all day.
ArcRiseGen he was particularly slow-witted for a "fish out of water" kind of character. Although it doesn't help that most of FFX's world was batshit inconsistent due to being run by a bunch of hypocrites
ArcRiseGen it is, that's why I consider it a mitigating factor to Tidus not picking up on really obvious things. But a lot of what he doesn't get makes little to no sense and may have just been left in to ask stupid questions as an audience proxy. however, that answer is quite meta and does nothing to help the character. it doesn't explain more than maybe half the things that he should be able to tell just by looking at people doing it.
Yeah, weird but ya gotta laugh! I think many have now grown up with FFX and it's a retro thing to look back and poke fun! If only I knew, I would have perhaps fought with the game makers to do just a regular laugh like I originally thought I'd do when I read the script earlier that day... 😜
Hey man, while your here I just wanted to say FFX is by far my favorite game of all time, and you were a big part of that for me. I know you get a lot of heat for certain scenes with Tidus, but I just wanted to tell you that I absolutely love your work in FFX and will never stop argueing that its the best FF game. Never stop doing what you do. Thanks for being so awesome about it even after all these years.
I must have watched this ten times by now; absolutely brilliant. Thanks for keeping up with the FFX fans after all these years! That game was the highlight of my childhood.
James... *recovering from laughing fit* ... you're my hero man. Only you would put recording and editing time into a video like THIS for your fans. Love you man. Still pursuing a career in voice over because of you! :)
I have a theory: I think everyone knows "The Tidus Laugh" was supposed to be bad but maybe it's just one of those things that people love to hate in a franchise. Maybe the Tidus laughing mod in the game is a sort of love letter for the game? I can only assume since I believe the creator of the mod said it took 2 years to make. I mean we all make fun of Cloud from FFVII and Squall from FFVIII for being emo. I guess what I'm trying to say WE ALL love to find something in a movie or a video game that is just plain silly and laugh at it. It doesn't detract from the experience they're all sort of inside jokes I guess? But on the other side of that I'm not a voice actor and if it were me personally having something that I did made fun of after being told to do said thing a certain way I'd be pretty upset about it. James has thicker skin than me that's for sure and I admire him for that and his voice talent.
Given that the mod's creator replaced everything, I'm sure he's aware of the context, but for whatever reason, he thought to himself "I should make the soundtrack be Tidus laughing."d
I always make fun of Tidus' laughing scene and even install that mod in my game. But I love that scene. It's funny and warm at the same time. In fact, it's one of my fav and it's an iconic scene of that game.
Cloud wasn't really emo. He was just originally a quiet guy overtaken by Zack's personality, and trying to find himself again after all the crap he's gone through is hard. NOW LEON. THAT DUDE IS EMO. I hate VIII :D
Eko's Corner When I name dropped Cloud as emo I was trying to make a point about assumptions and how nobody tries to understand the characters or plot. Obviously Cloud is not emo I was just playing Devil's Advocate to make a point.
James Arnold Taylor You have nothing to apologize for. You are an entertainer. That's what you just did for me & many others who saw this! Good job, sir.
I'm so glad you acknowledged this, and in such a positive way. As much as I think the whole laughing scene is misunderstood by the majority, I did find this hilarious!
I don't think YOU guys get it. Most who have played the game know it wasn't supposed to be a genuine laugh, but know that it was genuinely cringeworthy.
Sorry Josuke, but the people that do are those that have only seen the meme, or scene come up in a discussion on the importance of voice acting. It is intetional, but out of context you only experience awkward, forced laugter. For the time X had really good voice acting, now that it is taken more seriously and technology has improved it isn't quite the hallmark it once was. Also, Grand Priest, you're imagining a group to feel superior too, you are the one that has to get over yourself
Am I the only one who understood the laugh was supposed to sound like that when I first played FFX without JAT having to explain it way later? Ps love the ending of this video! 😂
Many others knew it but, just as many seem to have a different view... Well I've tried to go meta with this and laugh at the laugh and the laughers!! : )
I'm one of those who know that it's supposed to be like that... But i joke on it nonetheless. Not because i consider it bad acting (instead, i consider it GREAT acting exactly because it's so weird). Hey, it's a memorable-weird moment! But i mean no disrespect to you.
I feel like all the people that make fun of this scene misunderstood it. They were FAKE laughing on purpose and then they actually laugh for real at how ridiculous they sound. Seriously try to fake laugh and see how you sound before you diss on them! James Arnold Taylor did a fantastic job in this game and really brought Tidus' character to life!
Bless you for having a sense of humour about this, I'm sure the HA HA HA scene becoming a meme must having been irritating for everyone involved in the game.
I can see where Tidus is coming from tbh... "Yuna, I've just had my world turned upside down in the matter of a few days, I've watched you send people, seen the destruction that Sin has wrought upon Spira and you want me to smile and laugh?... AH HA HA HA HA HA HAHAHAAA" Seriously though, love this game always have. always will
2 goes against a lot of what made 1 good. Mostly it was much more linear and had a stronger emphasis on characterization. Plus the original NES version had serious balancing issues that you probably didn't see if you played the PSP remake.
Love the laugh, it brings back great memories, I also enjoyed the laugh mod haha. Thank you for your work, your talent is appreciated!! The laugh I think is less about criticizing your work, and more about giving a video game character we know and love a hard time. I think overall that the forced laugh was the best call, look how memorable it became! Like a few others have said, Tidus is one of my favorite videogame characters, and you were a big part of that. So again, thank you!!
I love making fun of this scene too myself, but it's also like my favourite moment of the game. It's just such a funny break from what's honestly a really heartbreaking game like all the way through. So Taylor, I'm glad you're taking the jokes so well. Most of us are laughing with you. And the ones that aren't do need to get over themselves.
now upload that so he can laugh at your video again, then laugh at his laugh laughing at your laugh while you now make a new video after he did it again.
I always loved that laugh in the game! I mean he had to pretend he laughed when he actually didn't and that was just great. You made Tidus to my most favourite FF guy ever. That loveable dork
Incredible, this game has such an impact on my childhood, I had a poster of Tidus with the water sword on my bedroom wall, I'd stare at it as I went to sleep every night. I'm now in my 20's with a family and I still think back to those times fondly. Once my kids are old enough I'm going to play FFX with them as my dad did with me when I was a kid.
I loved that scene in the game, especially when they turn round and everyone's looking at them funnily. I thought it was quite realistic. 2 people who both seemed down trying to cheer up and eventually laughing for real because it worked. This is the best response video ever!
I literally just played the game for the first time the day this was uploaded. This is amazing. I've missed out on a terrific game all this time and now I can finally say I've played (still am) Final Fantasy X. Thank you James ;-D
That delivery in between the laughs. That expression that says, "Why did someone do this?" before the happy laughter. Alright Mr. Taylor, you win. I never got the chance to know that you were the VA for Tidus, and really... I never had a problem with you voicing him. If there was any hate for the character, it would be for the character and not you (much like how I hate Snow as a character, but I don't hate Troy Baker). *Hits sub*
you're amazing for posting this. I got the original scene many years ago but it amazes me how some don't. Still... Tidus Fantasy X is amazing and thanks for this video to go along with it.
FFX is my favorite video game, and Tidus and Yuna are two of most favorite fictional characters (if not my absolute most favorite), and I think you and Hedy did a fantastic job bringing them to life. This video was fantastic, and I'm glad to see you also still enjoy the character that Final Fantasy fans have grown so fond of. Thanks. :)
Gotta say James Arnold Taylor is probably one of the best voice actors of all time and inspires the hell out of me to become a voice actor myself. He's my pillar of inspiration and can only hope to catch up to his talent.
JAT is among *the* greatest voice actors of all time, & it is embarrassing how little the fanbase appreciates names such as Dwight Schultz, Tara Strong, John DiMaggio, Keith David, & the other legendary performers who have graced the English dubs of Final Fantasy. Square Enix takes their dubs very seriously, & they are indeed well-performed, 2001 tech issues aside.
***** I most certainly agree. FFX dub is still pretty good (from what I've seen) to this day and the VAs that Jack Fletcher picked are the reason why IMO.
Felt the same way. Seemed like one of those film/tv scenes where you uncomfortably watch someone who has lost their mind in an asylum. Made more effective by the creepy laughing.
Thanks for clarifying for the people since many seem to miss the fact that after Yuna and Tidus laugh ackwardly THEN they laugh normally. The first laugh was meant to be ackward!
Stating this now, man: Normally I don't care about actors or voice actors and even I was curious for your reaction. This was so much better than I could have ever hoped and I definitely subbed. Keep up the good work.
Good ol JAT. I loved that scene cuz it was supposed to be awkward, I mean you can clearly hear Tidus laughing like normal right after that.Man, every time I hear your voice I get nostalgic for FFX!Thank you for all the awesome memories JAT!!
You're a good man. I listened to your story and it's as amazing today as it was 15 years ago. I also immensely appreciate your interactions with us, even if some of us are less than appreciative sometimes.
