I love Ella Fitzgerald, Edith Piaf, Judy Garland, Jessye Norman, Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle and many others. But there is something about Sarah Vauhgns voice that gives me thrills and chills and goosebumps like no other singer can. She is, to me anyway, the greatest ever.

Saw her in Troy, NY in the early 80's. The phrase "you could hear a pin drop" was the only way to describe it. Possibly the best vocalist . . . ever.

I heard Sarah Vaughan in a concert in 1971. One of the songs she sang was George Gershwin's "Summertime; right at the last note at the very end she put down the microphone and hit a high note (must have been a high Bflat) and held it out. I was sitting in the second balcony and that voice filled the entire hall. I'll never forget that experience. If she wanted to, she could have become an operatic soprano. Rest in peace.

If I had to choose one singer to listen to for the rest of my life, I would most naturally stay with Sarah Vaughan. Even though I might have to consider whether Ella might do the trick too, I would once again succumb to Sassy's charms. I must also say I was pleasantly surprised by the vocal coach presenting this video: her beautiful face and expressions, plus her honest enjoyment of and admiration for Sarah have also made my day. And her very voice when explaining some of the sections of the song really blew me away. There's a singer!

Wow !!!! Finally someone reacting to Sarah Vaughan such a perfect match with the name of your Studios ... and in tune with the passion of yours for exceptional talents ... I grow up listening to her thanks to my father passion for Jazz, a passion that I cherished trough all my life ... with Her in particular: she has been the reason of many joyful moments, but also She has been of great consolation trough the turmoils of life, and a blessing for my soul, ... Please, Miss Valerie, now that the "star-gate" is open let Her appear in future times ... I have in mind, for instance, "Send in the Clowns", "So many Stars", "My Funny Valentine", ... In any case, I can't thank you enough ... so I send my sincere appreciation to you!

What I see in this live performance is her filling each note all the way, even while changing her facial structure to a smile or a grin. Each note is held to the very end, with impeccable diction and enunciation. Too many jazz singers glossed over that. Hooray Sarah.

Sarah's voice was very resonant -- like a reed instrument (tenor sax?). Matching her gorgeous voice was her impeccable sense of musicality. She really had it all. P.S.: I discovered recently that she was a smoker for most of her life. It's amazing she didn't damage her voice like other great singers (Aretha to name one).

I especially love "Maria" (from West Side Story) and Gershwin's "I've Got Rhythm" from this concert. She turns every song on its head - and still blows me away, after listening to her for 30+ years. I missed Sarah, but I actually saw Dinah Washington as a youngster. Was raised by a single dad in the 60's of Chicago. Often went to sleep on two chairs together and pushed under the table in the clubs. Fell alseep during Dinah, but woke up around 2am when the band was ending. Dinah sat alone on a barstool and sang acapella for the room until 6am. I was wide eyed and remember it all. Good times

As someone who can´t sing but love to play jazz piano, I´m very impressed by Vaughan´s musicality. She sings like a masterful jazz instrumentalist plays a solo. Regarding jazz singers, I´d love to see you react to someone like Billie Holiday, for example I Love You Porgy, or Strange Fruit. Another great jazz singer was Frank Sinatra, but most people only know his hits where his voice wasn´t at its best. When he sang jazz ballads, he really showed what a master he was. I recommend the whole 1957 album "Where Are You".

I’ve been in love with Sassy for nearly 40 years…for my money, she’s the greatest vocalist of the 20th century…Ella thought she was the best too…i think it was Miles Davis who said that she did things with her voice that trumpet players wouldn’t dare try!…Sarah, Billie, Ella and Nina were (and still are) my goddesses who taught me as a child, what it was to be a great artist….my jazz aunties…then there’s Leontyne Price…Sassy and Leontyne, above all others, have a very special place in my heart…as you ask about other artists of interest, Melody Gardot is someone who I’ve taken a shine to recently…not necessarily as a great singer per say (though her voice is very fine), but as a very impressive and instinctive musician…thank you for your posts…I’ve greatly enjoyed watching so many of them….also very happy that you’ve included Aurora…she’s a very special and unique talent…best wishes from California 🥰

Fortunately, I heard her at the Newport Jazz Festival at Madison Square Garden, in 1966, or 67, I believe, At that time she was doing some more opera-like work using her upper register to spectacular effect. I haven't listened to her in a number of years and in this magical Misty for more reasons than I'm able to explain, I found my heart always in my throat. riveted and enraptured by every phrase she sang.
@squidkid2
@squidkid2 2 года назад
She uses her voice as an instrument. This is a concept that you've got to understand if you're ever going to master vocal singing. Your voice isn't just a thing it's an instrument. And like any instrument it requires mastering the subtleties of the instrument. I love how you can see in her smile that she knows she's nailing it. She knows she's getting exactly what she wants out of the instrument. And the backing musicians are doing precisely what they should to compliment her performance. This is the epitome of "comping". They provide the bare minimum of music necessary to let the soloist (in this case the vocalist) shine. All they're focused on is following the soloist's lead and staying the hell out of the singers way and they really do a masterful job of it. I think there are several times when she glances back in acknowledgement of how good the accompaniment is. Her voice is priceless of course but its the whole package that makes this a classic "performance". Great song, great performer, great performance. Its a trifecta that makes a video like this a one of a kind gem. RU-vid really is a wonderful source of videos of the great masters of the American songbook.

I am SO envious that you saw her live. The two voices that stop me cold in my tracks every time: Sarah Vaughan and Lara Fabian. Masters. Pure velvet. (As the contralto daughter of a trained contralto basso, I've always adored Vaughan's timbre. And never thought I would EVER love a soprano ... until I discovered Fabian. 😆)

Thanks for your comments and discussion. I saw her in the mid 80's and she must of been around 70, I'm guessing.. My roommate and I rode in a car full of girls and our tire blew out in the middle of the rural road we were traveling on to the rural college where Sarah was performing. It was scary! But we made it to the concert and sat in the front row! She wasn't as adventurous then as she was in this recording but we were still fan girling. I've always loved her voice as well...so rich and full. I always wanted to sound like her but I am a high soprano. And it's so interesting that you see similarities with Lara Fabian. She also has a rich, warm sound...I'm thinking she is a creamy lyric soprano. And Lara's intensity and focus is incredible
