Many Dimash fans say he makes them feel the emotion of the music even if they don't understand the language he's singing. That's what makes artistic decisions help rather than hurt a performance: carrying the message of the music, making us feel, and offering some surprise so we stay interested. Granted, "Diva Dance" is just meant to be entertaining and show off Dimash's one-of-a-kind ability.

👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷 Thank you! Great reaction and great discussion! So, in the original Diva Dance, that bar (which here has been changed to a series of staccato notes) had 11 notes in quick succession not just starting as a decorative twirl but then cascading to a very low note. The original soprano explained to the songwriter that it wasn’t humanly possible to sing this bar, and the songwriter happily answered that it was precisely his goal to make it sound alien (as it is sung by a blue alien in the movie). So that bar was manipulated using a computer. Now Dimash did sing this bar first in Kazakhstan at some event where he was dressed as an alien. The video was filmed by a fan so it’s rather blurry and from a distance. But you can clearly hear Dimash singing first the opening aria, then doing the Diva Dance including the infamous 11-note bar. Also he performs it again at the Bastau concert and at each of his solo concerts.

I loved the addition of the dancer. The first time I saw the Confessa performance, I think it had English subs, and the dancer became the other half of the relationship that was ending, which Dimash was singing about. They kept almost connecting, then did just briefly at the end before she left. Thank you for another interesting & informative reaction!

Hello from Germany. Dr. Reynolds, thank you for this analysis, it was fun to watch! Answering your question, the dancer here on the point of distracting us from Dimash, but the show people are doing a good job to keep it under control. She does looks like a ghost or his muse. It is achieved through the contrast of her dance and Dimash' natural movement, and his attempts to reach her as if through a glass. It would be so easy for him to mirror her, but he does not. He keeps moving natural, going to lots of drama towards the end of "Confessa", but as a theater actor, not a dancer. All that falling on his knees and knocking the stage with his fists. Also, the lighting on both is different. She is lit with dim ambient light, while he has that extra white spotlight on his face. Also, she looks Italian to me, which helps in guessing what is going on even without the lyrics. Now, if you want to see a badly done job with Dimash and a female dancer on stage, check the song at 18:16 in the following video: "Dimash Kudaibergen - Bastau concert - Astana" by Hélène Villard. Highly amusing at the end, but hardly achieving desired effect. Thank you once again!

When I watch the Singer performances of Dimash, I am always in awe but I also think that sometimes he's just "showing off ". That is the nature of competition and he's introducing himself to the world. One of the things that I think adds to this particular performance though is the stark contrast between the low register of Confessa and the high register of the Diva Dance. It is one of my favorite things about this performance. The timing on the exit of the dancer is perfect as well. If she would have stuck around for Diva Dance, I feel it would have detracted from the song and made it feel too busy. Love your reactions.

This is a good performance but I hope you'll still eventually react and analyze Dimash's performance of the Diva Dance at his Bastau concert. It was vocally much more amazing and very close to the version from the movie the Fifth Element. The performance also had a different feel as it was during his own concert in front of a huge audience. In Confessa, I was really impressed by how Dimash looked very natural but was constantly orienting himself with the dancer so that it looked interactive but not that she was his partner in the dance. That was an interesting point about moving to the beat versus moving to the melody- I'd never thought of it that way.

Yes, I agree with Inkacajo, the Bastau version was much better. His technique for low notes has developed a lot, as also shown at Arnau and New Wave concerts. I am amazed at how good the concert performances and the technical support elements there were.

@@DrMarcReynolds hi Dr. Marc, I think this current format is already good, but the font style used (white with black shadows), though looks classy, is kinda hard to read quickly. Also, I've read some people say that vocal fry is not a healthy practice, is this true? In love is like a Dream, where he uses vocal fry at the start, do you know what octave that was? Oddly, I just found out that my ears can't distinguish which octave the notes are when vocal fry is used (don't know why, because other than that, I can distinguish other notes easily).

Thank you for the Dimash video. I think Dimash’s performance changes depending on what country or audience he is performing for. When performing with Igor ( pianist and composer) his costume is slick and mature and the style of the song reflects that as well.

I think it's worth mentioning that the dancer is not for window dressing or simply to make Dimash look even better than he is; she is the one to whom the song is sung. The (translated to English) lyrics have lines such as I am no longer your thought, I am no longer your true love. I am the sweet that is bitter inside, which you no longer eat. But why are you a different woman? But why are you no longer you? But why did you not say it before? Who does not love will never be loved. When Dimash touches her hand at the hand and then releases it, he is signaling the end of their love. All her previous movement around him, closing in with each turn, is the "tease" that cruelly holds out hope for their love to continue. But it cannot.
@detkakz

Thank you...answer for me is that it's subjective - sometimes extreme vocal fireworks are clearly just showing off and unless the song was written for that purpose (e.g., Opera 2), I don't think it adds much to the performance. One thing I like about Dimash is that it's rare he travels outside the borders of good taste. DKIFC/USA

Hi! I think you found the best way to make short stops in the middle of the video. It was very interesting to read. About your question: I find that I usually need another focal point when watching singers, they don't keep my interest long enough by them selves. The only exception is Dimash. He draws my focus like a laser....can't even notice when a piano catches fire (like S.O.S in Worlds Best, never saw it ....) Dimash can be both very understated and also overly dramatic. Each is equally interesting. One of my favourite performances is Adagio from Singer 2017. He is very dramatic in this one. Love it! I hope you keep doing these reactions. I like hearing your view as a stage director also, you notice things I never thought of.

Probably won't happen. For us viewers, it's easy enough to find the performances on unofficial channels and watch them there instead. When trying to avoid copyright strikes and other forms of takedown notices and all the other fun stuff, the official video being taken down does send a certain message. It's very generous of Dimash and the people working around him that we get to see all these performances uploaded on an official channel. On the flipside, I imagine a video not appearing on the channel or even being taken down after the fact probably means that other holders of rights don't want it on youtube, or they want it on their own channel, or whatever else may be the case. Dr. Marc Reynolds is trying to play by their rules as much as possible, not just because it can get him in trouble, but because he respects these people and wants to respect their wishes/decisions. Besides, there are numerous performances sitting on official channels which he hasn't covered/analyzed yet.

Greetings of Peace to Dimash…! And to all the personnel’s who worked with you, and all others who did the translation, produced videos and uploaded it on line. My deep gratitude to the reactors worldwide for your great help and service done, so that artists can improve and or develop their talents and gifts at their best in order to serve better the listening public. I still browse the music videos of Dimash from time to time to see what still store in there. I’m just wondering how much effort and strength he had invested into his professional fields, to reach such a powerful voice and the many other talents that he had. Indeed it is really a great work. How he was able to develop such a heights of his talents is really admirable and worth learning. And it is much more beautiful because he sang it by heart, naturally and at his heart’s content with joyful disposition. The discipline, courage, dedication and high ideals in pursuing his singing career to the best of his ability the best he can, is worth imitating not only in our individual professional fields but also in living our day to day life. Hope his listeners around the world especially the young will learn something from his optimistic views in pursuing his career, his persistency, courage, creativity and perseverance. His hard work and labors are now indeed bearing fruits in abundance. And so my heartfelt congratulations to Dimash, to his family and all others who supported him all the way through as a musician. For me as a listener, it counts a lot the personal disposition of the singer and the content of its music. The power and beauty of his voice is so incredible. Much more, the possibilities and ease to sing it in many languages and in various voices are really amazing. But some others too also, cannot handle and cannot even believe the power, the strength and the heights of his voice…and they wonder and said oooh… is Dimash human..? I think It’s just a natural reaction that people wonder and probably surprise by it or cannot believed it at all, it’s because it is beyond human expectation. But I believed and are convinced that Dimash 20 year’s cultivation of his voice and talents is no tricks and no magic at all; though he is really gifted but his hard work and years of practice and experiences proves it to us and to the world … that indeed it is possible. My other concerns whenever I listen to music is that, I usually ask: WHAT MESSAGE THIS MUSIC BRINGS ..? TO THE WORLD..? TO PEOPLE..? Although Dimash music are very good, full of content and meaning but I like most this music, because for me it speaks a message of truth, values and realities of human life. And I feel that, it is not just enough to give my thumbs up to like this music, but I’m deeply moved to share something more about the richness and deeper meaning of it. With due respect to the composers, writers and singers of this music for whatever their purpose and intention would be, will always take precedence. The thoughts that I will be sharing below about this music is only the fruits of my personal reflections based on the things that I highly valued and on how I perceived it myself and the message of this song that reaches out to me. For all those who read these reflections and commentaries of mine about this piece of music performed by Dimash. If you think it is helpful for you, for your family and friends you can share it to them as you please, and I do really appreciate it. Or maybe you might have a different reflection experience of this music than mine; you can always revisit this music or other music of Dimash on line. Your own personal comments and critics to this commentary and reflection of mine is very much welcome and highly appreciated too. Song of Dimash in Italian “CONFESSA” (Ester Rabi’s Commentary & Reflection on this song: I like this music because it reminds me the great importance & value of our responsibility to our Commitment & Relationship) When it comes to commitment and relationships we should be solidly grounded on truth of what is really love. Because when tough time comes, that our love will be put to the test in certain circumstances, we don’t step backward or died down with our love instantly, but rather strengthens by it. Actually, because of sin we lost this beautiful gift and virtue of faithfulness within us and even among ourselves. When sin enters into the life of human being we become rebellious with God, with others and even to ourselves and or in any other relationships that we had. Meaning we become rebellious towards Good. For instance, we knew that unfaithfulness is not good, or lying and cheating is not good but why is it that our minds and hearts were drawn many times to such a thing..? But we knew also that deep down within us we want to be good or do good at all times. Yes, we can be a good boy or good girl for some time, some hours, some days or some month maximum, but we cannot all the time persevere on our own effort till the end. This is the reality of our human frailty and weakness that we have to face and bear till the end of our life’s journey. I think we all know that loving relationship and commitment is not all the time easy and smooth sailing, but it’s really a struggle to live it every day. Indeed it is a great challenge for all of us. Since it is beyond our human capacity to be faithful to our relationship and commitment all the time after sin enter into us, we go back once again, to the source of love (God) whom we can truly rely and depend with, because He Himself is LOVE, TRUTH and FAITHFUL GOD and He has all the power to help us in our need. Our human tendency when we are hurt and wounded and in pain in our commitment and relationship, our love prematurely ends in there, we immediately give up and we become bitter, angry, hopeless, depress, and worst, we want to take revenge. If people in the world continue to live such a kind of behavior towards each other in their loving commitment and relationship in tough times, what a miserable and sad life it becomes this earth to live in. I do believe nobody wants to live such a kind of life. Because by nature, our loving commitment and relationship will gives us indeed a great joy, though at times it entails a sacrifice and difficulties. If we only love those who are good, faithful and love us back… it’s no big deal. But the great challenge is, if we hang on to God’s love in us, we will be given by Him grace and power to sacrifice and to search everything for the good of our beloved both for their body and spirit, whether that beloved of ours is our family, friends, lovers, husband or wife. This kind of love is redeeming because God works in us and it enable us to love selflessly, wholeheartedly without judging and condemning of our beloved’s weakness, failings, sins and unfaithfulness, rather it will helps us go through to reach out to them to forgive and accepts them back, with joy and open arms. Through this, we both save our self and our love ones from the deception and dominion of the evil one, much more it will draws us back to the original truth of what is really love: To care and protect our love ones at all times in all circumstances. This is the hardest and difficult thing to do in real life, without faith, grace and power of God it is really impossible to do it by our self, but if we have faith in God, and hope in His grace, I believed nothing is impossible with Him; with God, we can do all things for our love ones, even to give up our life for them. Once again, thank you for your music and service to us. Rest assured of my support with you. God Bless..!. With Gratitude, Ester Rabi, Philippines

The part that interests me very much when the dancer comes out and Fall to his knees and takes his hand and picks up his hand and touches his face, you can feel the emotions that he's trying to relate to the people right then and there. It takes my breath away. Then when she moves away I felt as though she left him or he thought of her and it was all in his mind. The second part it's when he breaks out into the Diva dance voice, it doesn't have to have a meaning to it but the sound and his movements that's so good I feel esto words are coming out when there isn't no words.

Some people do not even realize he sings the first verse in Mandarin and the rest of the original in Italian, but keeps it in the same rhythm. Hard to do and he mixes languages in other songs as well. He is a very good composer such as Adagio in Englisg instead if Italian. I am a die hard Dimash fan. Not anything I find to complain about except the reactors stopping his songs or speaking over him 😉. I am waiting for him to play at the Barclay with the pianist Igor ( headliner) October 26th in NYC with some other singers. Some people don't like his high notes but that was his draw. He is starting to do more of his low notes now and not have to use his high notes in all his songs and I am just as enamored. Mademoiselle Hyde, Love of Tired Swans ect.
