Gary's music was highly influenced by Al Jarreau. You're correct that he took Al's rendition as a tribute to his idol and expanded the scat solo. I liked your reaction since you know the the song well. Having people with no knowledge of Chick Corea or Al Jarreau react to this performance is like grabbing a random stranger to referee an important game.

Thanks for reacting to this high energy performance. Interesting that you say it takes a mixed voice to scat. Another voice coach said it takes a mix to RAP. So anything fast past paced (or with a lot of syllables) needs a good mixed voice, to maintain vocal stamina and sustainability to avoid hoarseness , I guess?

Only if you're going up into the higher registers. If one stays low where chest voice is appropriate then you don't need the mix...but the scatting would be pretty boring. (-: Thanks for your comment!!

Mike, I had heard great things about Gary, and have heard him sing some duets. But, this was on a whole 'nother level. After seeing Spain, I'll have to spend some serious time on his other performances. I guess he was too young to have shown up on my radar while I lived in Manila. I'd sure like to have seen him live. It just makes a huge difference when the one reacting actually knows what this kind of music is all about. I have seen a few reactions which turned into a comedy because the ones reacting got shocked and couldn't make sense of what they were listening to. ha,ha,ha!

More and more foreigners are choosing to migrate and stay in the Philippines and I'm pretty sure it's not because of the music. You can be proud of our music but saying it's the only thing you can be proud of is rather pessimistic. You need a dose of nationalism.
