Voice Teacher - Reacts To - The Cars - Just What I Needed - Ken Tamplin
The 70s produced a lot of great bands and if you aren’t familiar with The Cars you definitely need to check them out.
The Cars were an American rock band that came out of the new wave scene in the late 1970s and were at the forefront in merging guitar-oriented rock with the new synthesizer-oriented pop that was becoming popular in the 70s.
Their debut album sold six million copies and appeared on the Billboard 200 album chart for 139 weeks.
The band was named "Best New Artist" in the 1978 Rolling Stone Readers' Poll and won "Video of the Year" for "You Might Think" at the first MTV Video Music Awards in 1984.
Many of you will recognize the song from the performance I’ll be reacting to. “Just What I Needed” is one of their most popular songs and was their debut single off of their very first album.
Check it out and let me know what you thought!

The Cars are one of the bands that have/had their own unique sound. Masters of their craft indeed. RIP Mr. Orr. He was one handsome man. Benjamin Orr was just amazing! Just a beautiful, full, & pleasant voice. As a musician, always felt he was a bit taken for granted when he was alive b/c he wasn’t that “flashy star persona” but the stable guy in the band that did much of the hard work & perhaps not always as recognized as he could have/should have been.

Elliot is really underrated. Just so tasteful in his playing. I love wankery too as it has it's place and the technicality is amazing, but you're right about him being underrated. He wasn't flashy but he served the song and had some really tasty solos. Tonight She Comes is one of my favorite solos of his.

Good reaction, Mr. Tamplin. Keep it up. Ric Ocasek also produced Weezer's debut album "Blue Album", released in 1994 and their third album "Green Album", released in 2001 (when I was 4 to 5 years old) and sadly, he also passed away back in 2019 two months after you released this video. Also, I did a latest cover of the guitar solo from this song back in July 12, 2021 after Mr. Rick Beato featured it in his video "Top 10 Underrated Guitar Solos of All Time" and the whole song in his 99th "What Makes This Song Great" video. Elliot Easton is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. R.I.P. Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek. We miss you both:(

Benjamin Orr what a magnificent voice. Ric Ocasek seem to get so much credit and not that he wasn't good but Ben was better and he was pretty cute, too. I'm originally from Boston so the Cars were like everything to us back then. In fact just a few months ago I got the cars original album series which is CDs of all five albums because I didn't have the vinyl ones anymore. I guess my sister took them. Amazing how I remember every song and pretty much every word. And just what I needed was the first one released and maybe not the biggest hit but one of them, probably top five I would think.

Ric Ocasek gets much of the credit because he wrote all of their big hits! The songwriter usually carries the biggest weight in the band especially if he's a hitmaker like Ric.

I lived in the metal shop in high school and Cars "Tonight She Comes" puts me back in there like it was yesterday. I had my own set of keys and worked alone on mills and lathes until 10pm when the janitors kicked me out. There were days where I cut class all day and headed to the metal shop at 3pm passing other kids as they were leaving to go home haha. Looking back, my shop teacher was taking a huge liability risk allowing me to do that. I ended up with a scholarship that paid for tech school so it was well worth it.

They were a huge band back then even though I don’t think they stayed around very long. A band that doesn’t stay together 10 years isn’t very long to me. Wow!! You did it again Ken, choosing such a talented band as The Cars. I was watching the video and it reminded me of when keyboardists in the eighties started wearing their keyboards on a strap around their necks like guitars . I guess they liked to be more mobile on their synthesizers while on stage. The synthesizer guitar trend needs to come back. A little late to the party I am, but Ken, im impressed with your discretion to honor this with your resources! Thx. FYI, There are better concert vids of these guys out there etc.. This one was a bit rough with engineering etc. Spot on u are. This band was at the advent of New Age etc., a serious break from the hard rock/heavy metal 70's. Somewhat of a throw back to the Bubble Gum 60's. (of which there was immense talent!) Unique in the way that the Doors music is unique. You know. Timeless. Saw them on the BIG stage, full house, at the Spectrum, Philly (R.I.P. hallowed temple of the gods!!!) same year as this. Was totaly more engaging and impressive! Benji had quite the chords. Very suave! As ALWAYS, Ken, thank you for your selfless generosity in putting these clips out here for us. It means a lot and sure as hell is inspiring and helping dreamers find a way!

Ben was a gift from God. And a better bassist than many recognize.

Ken I absolutely LOVE your reviews and reactions (especially for my Boston boys The Cars), you have such brilliant insight. Have you ever done a video reaction to The Doors? I’d love to see that. Jim was such a rad performer

2:35 I've had the privilege to have played in a band that had a Lead Singer/Bassist. I also played and sang in another band a couple of times while playing my drums...both are extremely hard to do.

Loved The Cars. Ric's song writing was great especially on the earlier albums Ben was a terrific vocalist; nice pitch, good range. I agree the comment about Elliot Easton being an underrated guitarist. I also think David Robinson is an underrated drummer. IMO too much emphasis was placed on the keyboards and not enough on the lead guitar and drums.

Agree there about David. Not nearly enough footage of Elliot and David live. Keys were a big part of the sound then, though. Greg still gigs and is a great personality. They all were.

Hey Ken, not a lot of people near where I live (Prince Edward Island, Canada) seem to like rock or anything like that, which is what I like. So when I watch your videos, it takes me to a different, happy world where I can finally be with someone who shares the same interest in rock as I do. Thank you for the videos, youre the man!

Your emphasis on the importance of parts gained a new subscriber...as a fellow Musician, i am sure that you, as i, labour over the parts of a song, the little bits/accents/fills/riffs, et al. Parts are the seasoning in the sauce, and everything to a songwriter.
