We’ve had several requests to spend some time looking at pro-level lavalier microphones. In this episode we take a quick look at and listen to the omni-directional VT500 lavalier from Voice Technologies, a Swiss microphone company. For reference, we also have some sound clips from the Sanken COS-11D lavalier, one of the very common lavalier mics used by pro location mixers for film and video. And we include samples with male and female voice.
I was really impressed with the VT500 with it’s unusual front facing capsule and found it’s audio quality to be very good and its form factor easy to hide. The foam windscreen is thoughtfully designed with hard plastic backing to prevent noise from rubbing against clothing, and the RF shielding worked nicely to avoid those annoying interference issues. There’s also a waterproof model for those recording more exciting pieces in or near water.
You can find our previous review of the Countryman B6 lavalier microphone over at • Countryman B6 Lavalier...

I have been using VT-500 series mics for many years after I had too many Trams fail too quickly. I thought since the VT group was still alive and was improving their product that they would be better to support than the excellent Ted Rapp (Tram inventor) who unfortunately had passed away years before and was no longer around to improve his product. Over time I have found the VT's a little bit delicate and prone to failure with no obvious reason. Usually after a few years. I usually have about 5 working heads around at anytime so it is nice if the accessories all match. Also while they sound good when you first get them I do hear a difference between older and newer mics so not convinced they are as consistent sounding as I would like them to be. Still looking for the durable bulletproof Lav.

[CHRIS] Curtis, We have a couple of RodeLink Wireless Kits, and in looking to upgrade the so-so Rode lav that is included, I read some things about different manufacturers not always using TRS the same for the 1/8" connectors. It looks like the VT500 only has one 1/8" option, but it's listed as "Wired for Sennheiser EW series". Is it a safe assumption that a 1/8" lab mic listed as "Sennheiser" would work with the Rode Wireless? And I watched most of your other videos on lav mics, and it seems the Countryman B3 is in our price range of $200, but wondered if you had any other models we might look at? I have my eye on the Oscar TL-40 at $145. Thanks, Chris
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 лет назад
Hi Chris! Yes, in fact, the main narrative in this video was recorded with the VT500 and RODELink so we have confirmation that the version wired for Sennheiser works great with RODELink. The $100 - $200 range is pretty scarce but I have heard good things about the Oscartech and think it is definitely worth considering. Sennheiser's ME2 is around $150 and sounds great on some people, not so great with other voices. I'd probably go for the VT500 or the Oscartech. Good luck!

All the parts including Mic and Clips are matching 100% because they are mold injected. As I know the only company who has waterproof lavalier microphones with ipx7 certification (VT-500Water / VT506Water). And it is all made in Switzerland, so you can except high Quality and support. I used also the VT-Duplex vocal for singing because it has 136dB SPL and even strong voices can`t clip it. And they are strong in custom made solutions.

Hey, Curtis (nice name btw)! I was wondering, How much does the recorder affect a lavalier microphone? I have a Sound Device Mix-pre 6 for my shotgun NTG3 mic, but I wanted to get a mic like the VT500 and pair it with a secondary portable recorder, like the H1n, for redundancy. Would there be a drop in quality from the Mixpre 6 to the H1n?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Hi Curtis! In terms of self-noise, condenser microphones like 99.9% of lavalier microphones will generate more noise than the preamps to which they are connected unless using very low quality preamps. That being said, I suspect the H1n's preamps will impart a couple dBs more noise than the MixPre but I haven't specifically tested that. In addition to that, the preamp will impart it's own character to the recorded sound. The H1n, in my testing, tends to impart a bit of a midrange focused sound which sometimes requires a bit of EQ to get recordings to sound their best. The MixPre imparts the tiniest bit of low-end warmth so the recording is often usable as is straight out of the recorder.

Thanks a lot for this Curtis! How do you think this mic works hidden underneath clothes though? I heard people that it is a pain to hide it and that it doesn't perform as good as cos-d11 and others. What are your thoughts? I know that the VT506 is meant to be hidden and that works better but I'm thinking to buy a second hand VT500. Thanks!

Hi Javi, I've had good luck with it under clothing - have used it on several jobs to good effect. Every mic complements different voices. I personally prefer the sound of the VT500 over the COS-11D on my voice, but that can be very different for other voices.

Hi Curtis, thanks so much for your videos, I always learn a lot. I have a semi-related question - I have a few Giant Squid lapel mics that I use with the Rode News-shooter, but I struggle with RF interference - moving the transmitter away from the mic helps a little but it's still an issue. Have you ever used one of those ferrite chokes to remove interference, or should I just buy a better lapel mic like this (or perhaps something in the $100-$200 range)? Any advice would be much appreciated.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
+Gary King hi Gary, I haven't used the ferrite chokes, unfortunately. I find these more reasonably priced wireless systems to be prone to seemingly random performance. For this review, in fact, the audio samples were recorded with Sennheiser G3 wireless. But when I went to record the main talking head segment the following night in the same location, I had to switch to the RODELink to get interference free audio. And I the same location in the past, I've also experienced the inverse - could only get a clean signal with the G3 kit. I'm open to trying anything that might help. Where does one find the ferrite chokes?
@garyking4032

There's an article here on them (I just skimmed, most of it's too complicated for me). It seems like you can buy them in 10's and they're pretty cheap - www.amazon.com/dp/B01LXJK1E6/ref=psdc_761520_t3_B0002MQGEK - I might give them a try.

Interesting. I owned a VT500 for years and always liked it. (It's a long story about where it and my other sound ger went. Long story short, don't leave stuff in your car. Ever). I especially like how the alligator clip makes it easy to hide on a female actor's bra. So back to your review. I agree the VT500 did compliment your voice much more than the Cos11. What was surprising is that it was quite the opposite when tested with the female speaker, since I had told myself that worked particularly well with women's voices. Now I know we all have unique voice characteristics regardless of gender. So that's one possible explanation. I did notice the mic overmodulated a bit when she spoke the word "why". (The Cos11 did too but it was much less noticeable). The mics being exposed might account for the difference between what I recall and what I am hearing now.
@curtisjudd

Ouch, noted on leaving things in the car. And yes, good point, I believe the VT500 and COS-11D are voiced for concealing under clothing. so probably should have done that.

Curtis! I found my way here from your recommendation. I’m about to purchase but just want to double check. The VT500 eco (from your link in description) says it’s designed with “TRS Locking Connector for Sennheiser”. I just want to make sure that the locking connector isn’t exclusively for sennheiser. Will it still plug into a rode wireless go?

What do you think about using the VT-500 with the Tascam DR-10L for narrative work? Does a pro mic like the VT-500 (or DPA 4060) need to be combined with a higher grade recorder (e.g., Lectrosonics PDR) to fully utilize its capabilities? Thanks.

I got the vt500 seinheiser from bhphoto. Zoom h1n mic input is working properly since i tried a cheap lavalier and it sounded with both channels
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Yes, different mics are wired differently. Most that are wired for Sennheiser wireless (like the VT500 probably?) will only record to the left channel. You can just mute the right channel or remove it in post so that the audio plays back as dual mono (both speakers).

TA4F to 3.5mm or Lemo ? It seems logical to get one lav mic and adapt to other connectors. I just have no idea if there are limitations to such a plan and what is the best base lav to get and adapt from there in the future if I have to. Thanks if you can help me out any at all.

Hi Curtis, I see you used the Rodelink for wireless transmission. Would you consider it a professional transmitter/receiver kit, I should I look at something like a Sennheiser?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Hmm, not sure whether I'd consider RODELink pro level though I have used it on some paid jobs and it worked quite nicely. Its transmitter is quite large which makes it hard to conceal on actors. It also drops signal when the actor goes behind a wall which is not often a problem but I did have a job where that presented some issues earlier this year (the producers insisted that the sound mixer should not be in the room with the talent because they were doing a research project and wanted as few people in the room with the participants as possible). In these cases, I go with the G3 (which, incidentally, I used for the audio quality tests in this episode). In short, I keep both in my kit so that I can switch to the other when needed. One time I was having all sorts of interference issues with the G3 and flawless performance from the RODELink. In other cases, the inverse. Wireless can be tricky and there is no perfect solution for every situation. If I were not shooting professionally and could choose only one, RODELink is probably good enough for most cases.

@@GODLIKE99KINGZ This is not a wireless system, just a microphone which you can plug directly into your computer. You will still be tethered to your computer via cable. So in short, no, I don't think this is what you're looking for. Maybe something more like the RODE Wireless GO: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UNfXmB_blwI.html

Hi, Curtis! Great review as always. I actually liked your voice more on Sanken, rather than VT, it sounded more spacious and airy. I always wanted to ask you to test another lav mic, Tram TR50, which is recommended by many film professionals. I'm looking forward to changing the lav on Tascam DR-10L and consider this microphone without the power supply. I hope Tascam can feed it, but I'd like to know your opinion, please. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/415886-REG/Tram_TR50GSET_TR50_Omnidirectional_Lavalier.html

Hi Dancing Camera, Thanks! The Tram is on my long-term "to try" list so I plan to review it some day. My impression from listening to samples and hearing from other engineers is that the TR50 has a pretty strong high frequency boost voicing so it generally works best concealed under clothes (in fact, seems like it was designed for this purpose).

Yeah, I wanted to connect this question to the Rode VideoMic Pro+ "High Frequency boost" feature, which you recommended only if using the DeadCat. I'd like to hear in your episode how the high frequency boost changes the voice (with Rode and Tram microphones) to understand why you not really recommend to use it by default. Isn't it supposed to improve speech character as advertised like sweeten the voice? I was going to use this feature at all times for documentary production, when the lav should not be seen, but I do consider your warning. I'd like to suggest that you create another episode titled "Better Lav Mics for Tascam DR-10L", because it is widely popular among filmmakers, who don't yet have a wireless system. Thanks for consideration!

Voice Technologies has another microphone of the 500 series. called VT506. this was made with a high frequency boost if you use it under clothes. So maybe this sounds better to you than the VT500, if you like the high frequency Sound.

vt 500 sounds better. I think has deeper than cos11! cos11 is brighter but more nasal. i have vt500 but the wire is disaster, extremly delicate. im consider to buy cos 11 because some review said that is strong lav.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 года назад
The COS-11D is a very tough lavalier. The downside of that is that it is a bit harder to hide under form-fitting shirts.
