In today’s episode, we have a listen to the new W.Lav Pro and W.Lav Micro lavalier microphones from DEITY. These mid-market lavaliers are made to work with most pro level wireless microphone systems - not just the DEITY Connect. I record several samples here with my Audio Ltd. A10 wireless microphone system to a Sound Devices 888 mixer/recorder.

FWIW, I always prefer hearing your voice as it is at the end of the review e.g. @13:25 Even since tinkering with recording as a teenager, I went for the flat, natural tones. I read somewhere eons ago that the microphone is like the lens on a camera. There are lots of choices but it's the first thing your content comes through and affects everything happening from then on. Question: Have you covered somewhere else what you do with excess lavalier cable between the capsule and where the belt pack is? I did see the video about hiding certain lavs in a button hole, but knowing where to put excess cable so it's secure and less prone to getting damaged would be good. Keep up the series Curtis. It's the most authoritative information I've found.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
For corporate work where we're just shooting head and shoulder, talking head types of shots, I generally just tuck the excess into the pocket or waistband of the talent. For narrative, usually in the waistband as well, often secured with tape so that it doesn't fall out.

My voice produces a rather nasty resonance with almost all lavalier microphones when they're mounted to my chest. But good news - a little bit of EQ makes it sound really nice, including the W.Lav Pro and Micro. Hear a sample with EQ at 07:31
@Hexspa
@Hexspa 4 года назад
What frequency range? I find that the MKE600 sounds too midrange-y with the 100Hz HPF engaged. Gonna try my next video with it and the windscreen off.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
@@Hexspa 960Hz - ish. But the best way to find it for your voice, mic, and location is to boost by about 6dB, set the Q to about 20, and then sweep across the frequency spectrum until you hear the midrange problem get even worse. Then cut there by 2-4dB and widen the cut to a Q of about 2.
@Hexspa
@Hexspa 4 года назад
@@curtisjudd So you're doing a relatively wide, shallow cut? You ever try dynamic EQ? Do you use the HPF on your mics? Sorry for all the questions but I reference your videos every time :)
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
@@Hexspa I often apply a HP filter at 50Hz in post though we didn't do that here so that you could hear the audio directly out of the recorder. I don't use dynamic EQ just because I don't have a dynamic EQ plugin as yet. Yes, I usually apply a relatively wide, shallow cut to manage unpleasant resonances - that way they generally sound fairly smooth and natural.
@Hexspa
@Hexspa 4 года назад
@@curtisjudd Ok. Yes, I noticed that you have more bass in your voice over than I had in my recent vids. If you're curious about dynamic EQ, the MAutoDynamicEQ is good but doesn't seem to work that well with Premiere Pro - though that can be related to me running integrated graphics and the way Melda does their GUI. They have 50% off sales all the time so watch for those, if you're interested. Waves has one, the F6 I believe, if you like them. Anyway, I tried your curve and Q=2 is actually pretty narrow don't you think? Regardless, you have great sound and I'll continue to try out your advice and reference your excellent work! Cheers.

If I am not mistaken the SPL of the W.Lav Pro is actually 110. I'm not sure if it was mentioned in a video of Sound Speeds or reddit. 110 is written down in the manual although every site on the internet states it is 130. As mentioned, this could be wrong. But I think it's worth pointing out.

Great review Curtis! So in terms of wireless lavs, any newer ones coming out in the near future that could be game changers? What do you think is the best at this moment for higher end wireless mics? I watched your other reviews including the Rode Wireless Go and Picogear (which just got in stock). I was thinking of hooking the Tascam DR10 to the Rode that way I have a "back up", but I haven't pulled the trigger yet since I'd need two Rode mics/receivers on the camera on the gimbal and it starts to get clunky.

Hey Dr. Reyes, good to hear from you, thanks. There's always Lectrosonics, Wisycom, Zaxcom, and Audio Ltd. on the pro end. Very expensive, but very reliable and they all sound very good - these are what are used in the big budget film and TV productions. I'm not aware of any new pro-sumer or consumer wireless systems coming that really change things in any substantial way.

Great review, and they sound pretty good. Any comments or tests directly on cable noise? Is the silicone slippery enough to avoid scratching on simple movements (like holding the tip of the mic and running something up the cable to the tip to measure when it starts sounding scratchy)? You did some simple scratch tests, but the scratch could've been related to mounting. Trying to determine the source. Thanks again, curtis.

Thanks for the insightful review. I've been looking for a good mid-tier lav mic. I would like to be able to plug it into the XLR input of my Zoom H5. I contacted Deity and they said this adapter would work: YPA XLR to Microdot adapter. But the adapter itself costs $50, which is kind of absurd when the W.Lav Pro costs $100. I didn't want the wireless part, just a lav mic that connects via XLR. If the W.Lav Pro + adapter is $150+, it seems like the Countryman B3 XLR lav is just a bit more. It seems tricky to find an XLR lav, not that many out there unless you want to use the adapter that Deity recommended.

Hi Curtis. Excellent review. Really tempted to buy the W.Lav Pro. My only concern is I think you mentioned it would be best suited under clothing (apologies if I'm mistaken!). For our small production company, we do a lot of corporate shoots, interviews etc where the mic is fine to be visible. In future, we will hopefully do more shoots where the mic needs to be hidden e.g. short films. I do want to purchase a prosumer/professional microphone that is good quality (sound doesn't need to be incredible though!). Do you think I should look elsewhere for a mic that will perform better outside of clothing or will it do just fine for the situations I've described, and have the added benefit of working even better under clothing on the rare occasions we need it to?

Would you say that these are a meaningful step up in audio quality compared with other options at or less than about US$100? Also, they offer a micro-dot to locking 3.5mm. Will the locking 3.5mm fit into non-locking jacks? I'm thinking of the Rode Wireless Go as an example.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
I think so. I've gotten out of the business of reviewing every $20 lavalier microphone which is sold on Amazon, so I'm not exactly an authority on the topic of sub $100 lavalier mics, but amongst those I've used, the W.Lav Pro and Micro seem like a nice step up - not lacking capture across the frequency range which is important to dialogue audio. I don't have the DEITY locking 3.5mm on hand to confirm, but my experience has been with most 3.5mm locking connectors, you can attach them to inputs without locking threads.

Hi Curtis, thank you so much for your videos, I've always found your reviews objective and professional. I have a quick question, sorry if you already talked about this matter. I bought the Deity Connect System but the lavs that came with it, as you may know, sound bad (that was expected). I wonder if it's possible to use a better lav like the MKE2 with the Deity Connect Transmitter and receiver? I would like to buy the W.Lav Pro but I haven't found it anywhere in Europe and I live in Sweden. If you believe that I should look for another Lav alternative I'm all ears. I bought a lot of gear based on your reviews and I'm very happy with the decisions I've taken. Have a nice week!

I'm certainly no audio pro, but this mic, as well as the Countryman, both sounded a bit nasally to me, or thin, or lacking that rich, full body sound I normally hear from the reviews that Curtis does. Not so bad that I would not buy either of them (far better than simply speaking into your camera with no microphones), but the sound is just not there for me and is off to my untrained ears. Then, with the EQ on and applied, that made a big positive difference to my ears. Much better.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
Hi R. S., yes, that is due to the timbre of my voice - almost all lavalier microphones pick up this very prominent resonance at 1kHz and in many cases, another around 2kHz. This includes pro-level mics like the Sanken COS-11D which are widely used on the biggest film and TV productions. So EQ is always needed on recordings of my voice with lavalier microphones - mainly due to my voice and the fact that the mics are worn on the body.

Hi Curtis. Thanks for the review. I'm looking for a Lavalier mic for Zoom and Microsoft Teams meetings for my work and came across these mid-tier options. I just had a few questions pertaining to the Deity mics. You had mentioned that you applied EQ at post to get them sounding a little more natural. However, my government laptop does not allow me to install any third-party software and I'm not going to be doing any type of professional recording since my audio is going to be streamed via Teams/Zoom. Would these still be considered a good option to get good audio quality for these streaming endpoints? Hi Ricky, a 3.5mm TRS (female) to 3.5mm TRRS (male) adapter should do the job, but first, how do you plan to listen if you use the 3.5mm jack for a microphone? Playing back from the speakers with an omni-directional Lavalier microphone might not be a great combination.

@@curtisjudd Thanks Curtis. I usually have the output as the onboard speakers on my laptop or send audio out to a Bluetooth speaker. Another option I have is connecting my IFI IDSD Signature DAC via USB A to the laptop as the output (lav mic as the input via 3.5mm port on the computer) and then using the DACs 6.3mm to 3.5mm adapter to connect to my headphones or external speaker. To your point regarding the audio interference with external speakers and the omni-directional Lavalier mic, I do have another workstation where I have connected a Blue Yeti X condenser microphone to the computer via USB as the input and have customized the onboard speakers as the output for my Microsoft Teams calls. I've been using this set up for a year and have had no complaints from people on the other end with the mic picking up any reverb from the computer speakers. However, that is a stationary set-up so I was looking for something that is super portable that I can connect on the go. Anyway, I'll have to do some more research to see if the omni-directional mic will have issues with this type of set-up (might have to just field test them). Thanks again for all your help!

@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 года назад
Hi Michael. That's pretty normal, yes. It is important to gain up enough to get a good signal to noise ratio on the transmitter. If you leave the gain too low, the dialogue will be closer to the noise floor and that will just make the noise floor louder when you boost in post.
