Flynn R. Basically when the game was released in Japan, like Resident Evil/Biohazard they wanted English voiceovers for a Hollywood movie feel. The level of English in Japan is sufficiently low (even more so 20 years ago) that it really doesn’t matter if the script is perfect, and bad acting goes mostly unnoticed as would bad Japanese voice acting in an English-speaking market. Then when it comes time to localise for English speaking territories, it’s a quandary. We already have a just-about-passable English game, we can just localise the text and be done with it. For the non-Japan arcade market it’s just not justifiable to spend the money to retranslate and re-record everything for in incremental improvement in a game that’ll be played in crowded arcades where the VO isn’t front and centre anyway. This kind of “fake localisation” is still seen in a lot of Japanese media today - for example English-speaking characters in movies that speak total gibberish (generally from Google Translate), and are then subtitled in Japanese. The main difference is that the home video game market outside of Japan is now big enough to warrant proper localisation, and the increased prevalence of Western-developed games has raised consumer expectations.

It's quite funny considering how G was implied to be a cyborg in the manual of the first game. Sure, it was retconned later, but when you look at him from that theory in mind, it becomes pretty ironic that a cyborg sounds more human-like than the actual humans.

+UnlikeChuckleIDontKnuckles I think this actually was Sega experimenting with early computer generated voices and not using real voice actors. That's why HOTD1's voice acting was actually better than 2, because they actually used real people for the 1st one. Still, it's hard finding any absolute proof on this. You can't even find a list of the voice acting cast for the game so... seems likely.

Do you have proof yet? I have suspected this for years but can't find anything on it. Edit: Flynn R. below sounds pretty sure of this: _All of the voice actors were American translators residing in Japan, so_ _the reason why most of the voice acting was so bad in this game was_ _mainly because the actors had to read AND act out the script (Which was_ _in Japanese) at the same time, all with no clue of what's going on._ _Corey Bringas was the only VA who was decent enough because he voiced_ _Tails in Sonic Adventure and didn't directly work with sound director_ _Kawauchi-san (Since Corey did his voice acting work in San Diego instead_ _of Japan), he was given a script that was pre-translated to english_ _since he wasn't a legal translator._ _The voice acting was done in a single day, all but Corey were_ _translators (Not Actors), and the VA's had to also work with two other_ _sega arcade games on that same day (Vampire Night & Ghost Squad)._ _Doing some research online, I managed to discover the VA cast:_ _Dennis St. James - James Taylor_ _Corey Bringas - Gary Stewart, Child Civilian_ _Samantha Vega - Amy Crystal, Young Female Civilian_ _Andrew Hankinson - Harry Harrison, Adult Male Civilian_ _Greg Dale - Agent G, Young Male Civilian_ _Russ Veillard - Caleb Goldman, Thomas Rogan_

The first one had decent voice acting, the 3rd game they actually tried. HOTD4, Goldman's voice acting sounded better. Still waiting for HOTD5..

ViperAcidZX Personally I think the voice acting is part of what makes this game so awesome. Just like the original Resident Evil 1 and it's hilarious lines (although the Remake is fantastic too).
