Frollo has long been recognized as the most evil of Disney's villains. It is because he brings the worst of human depravity to the forefront of his character. When Geoff's eyes glowed with the fire it made many people shiver. The guard was played by Toni Wakem, but the guard's voice was Eli.
Not only Geoff's low (we know and appreciate those) but also his highs AND the enourmous flexibility of his voice. AND of course his acting... 😮😅❤ And all of the others shine too - but it remains a horrible song if you listen to the lyrics... 😢
It's supposed to be. Frollo is gaslighting about his emotions. Instead of accepting that he's attracted to Esmeralda, then letting it go, he's blaming her for it as if she's a temptress. The emotion of attraction is fine. Normal, she's a beauty true. It's how he's handling it that makes it so wrong. So yes. This song is meant to be uncomfortable, a bad song.
@@danielstephens1185 thank you so much for bringing the term "gaslighting" into this... there is no expression in German for it but a 5-line explanation in the dictionary... the situation Frollo/Esmeralda seems a perfect example. Thanks!
Something that struck me the first time I watched this, and continues to resonate is J. None's verse, but not for the reason you might think. If you listen to it, you can hear big gasping audible breaths between his phrases. (Protect me Maria *breath* don't let this siren cast her spell *breath* etc) Not only is this not something J needs to do to support his singing here, as he's in the sweet spot of his range, but its not something Voiceplay typically leaves in an audio mix. That's when I realized. Frollo is desperate, pleading. He's coming undone due to his temptation. Of course the singing isn't smooth and polished. Think about the last time you begged with someone for something, if even just to listen to you in conversation. So much meticulous care in this arrangement, and the final mix.

I so loved both but from what i see most reactors haven't caught up yet with Bass Gang's new vid, Gaston. Peter embodied the character in a hilarious way and set and costumes and location ate like a Broadway production
I see this as a man going from torment (the crackle in his voice) into madness. There is a point just after “burn it” where he looks at his hands as he’s singing “this fire in my skin” as if he is confused by his mania. There is so much to unpack in this. I had listened to it over a dozen times before I heard Geoff’s arpeggios while J is singing. I think I probably heard them, it’s just that my ears and my brain were full of everything else that was going on!

J. None is appearing more often often now with VP, maybe because he was recently moved to Washington from the North West section of the navy music section. He was promoted and now sings bass with them but the move made it a bit easier, travelwise, to get to Florida for filing, when he's on leave. I think maybe Geoff was layered, to make a fuller sound. They do a lot of layering these days. The guard who speaks is Tony Wakim, ex member, who still helps out with the filming often. He owns and runs Pattycake Productions with Layne. Layne's genius as an arranger and editor is shown here so well. For once, no outro, there was nothing else to say. :) But to see a bit of how they arrange, look at the video they did on making a Loop.
Tony Wakim is the body, but Eli is the voice of the guard, much the same as when they did Oogie Boogie's Song, where Kathy's brother was the body of Santa while Eli did the voice. 😉
As it says in the credits in the description, Tony Wakim was the physical embodiment of the guard (a last-minute choice), but it was Eli who provided the voice of the guard. I was also blown away by the precision of the arpeggios Geoff did behind J's verse!
I’m happy you picked up on the timing. Many of Layne’s arrangements feature tricks with the timing, but to me this one is one of the hardest to sing along with. Toward the end when Geoff is singing ‘God have mercy…’ the background Kyrie Eleisons are almost impossible to place.

@@YBPlaysMusic It's part of the formal churches litany. Geoff's lines about God have mercy on her, God have mercy on me is basically the English translation. Kyrie Eleison is being sung in the background.

Somewhere on RU-vid there is a clip of Geoff saying nothing but Um, Ah, Uh taken from a variety of his work..... You made me think of it there at the end of your outro! Great minds, right?
When has VoicePlay _ever_ done a cover that stays on the same rhythm and tempo for the whole song? I don't think they did that even way back when they were called 4:2:Five, let alone any time recently.

The guard was played by Tony Wakim who was a member of VoicePlay and now is a partner of the company where they filmed the video (the other owner is Layne). Tony spoke the guard’s lines.
Appreciate the insight offered in your reactions. It helps a lot. While I never appreciated this Phantom of The Opera Voiceplay's rendition is a perfect example of the abilities and talents.

J None was a former member of Voiceplay from 2018 to 2021, when he left the group to join the Navy. Why wouldn't he know how to make Voiceplay succcessful? Huh? He will ALWAYS be considered a Voiceplay family member, and, when his schedule permits, he comes back as a guest vocalist. Stop delegating him as a "flash in the pan", when his voice talent was always there.
