We usually think of materials based on our experience in the natural world. For example, something that’s light is usually fragile (like a feather) or something heavy is usually strong (like a brick). But what if we could engineer a material that had completely new characteristics that defied properties found in nature? Engineered materials, also known as metamaterials, allow us to do just that. DARPA Program Manager Dr. Rohith Chandrasekar in DARPA’s Defense Sciences Office has led programs designing metamaterials that revolutionize how light interacts with matter. His programs are enabling new concepts for improving Warfighter effectiveness and health on the battlefield with new optics and materials. In this episode, Dr. Chandrasekar discusses several of these programs including Enhanced Night Vision in Eyeglass Form (ENVision), which has developed metamaterials to replace heavy and bulky binocular-like night-vision goggles lenses with lightweight lenses providing more infrared information and near eyesight field of view, in a form factor like a pair of glasses. He also discusses his Coded Visibility program, which focused on developing novel obscurants (aka smoke) used on the battlefield to provide friendly forces with visibility of the environment, while simultaneously hiding them from detection by an adversary. The catch, however, is that the smoke particles needed to be safe to breathe and potentially even tunable using active sources. Finally, he talks about the Accelerating discovery of Tunable Optical Materials (ATOM) program. This effort seeks to identify new materials whose properties could be rapidly changed to enable different functions. Imagine a massive telephoto camera on the sideline of a sporting event replaced with a planar imaging system that could zoom, or a thin filter that can rapidly collect critical data across infrared bands for spectroscopy, all with no moving parts. Sounds like magic, but it’s not! Enjoy listening to DARPA’s Metamaterial Visionary.

I'm just a regular guy who didn't finish college. I enjoy discussions on topics like metamaterials and how I can apply them to my absolutely unnecessary projects. For instance, if I were to create a quantum communication antenna, would a semiconductor-based or superconducting qubit be best?

The qubit would be for entangled resonator.

HOW ABOUT USING RESONANCE TO CHANGE THE PHASE OF PHOTONS? In condensed matter physics, for instance, when sweeping the incident frequency of light in a reflectivity experiment of a semiconductor, a phase difference arises between the photon and the phonon above the phonon frequency --Resonance can affect the polarity as well as the dipole moment of a molecule, but only if the resonance structures involves 'formal charge separation'. The formal charge being a theoretical charge doesn't indicate any real charge separation in the molecule. Formal charges help in the selection of the lowest energy structure from a number of possible Lewis structures for a given species.

Oooh, optics! Question. If I were to create a magneto-optical nanostructure using something like yttrium iron garnet and e-beam lithography, could I theoretically use a magnetic field to manipulate the nanostructures?

This may be a stretch, but I conducted RF reception studies in the direct path of Hurricane Irma, under a bridge on the beach. I found 33.7MHz would transmit at some distance. How this might be applied as optical informational transmission? Well, I dunno yet.

It's time to declassify stuff that I've been talking about on my YT channel for 15 years now... This is the only way to give US a techncial advantage over Russian and China in the coming decades. We need to educate young people on these technologies...

That makes no sense some things deserves security clearance, and therefore some technologies don’t deserve to have public scrutiny in the over them quite yet. It’s a miracle DARPA even has his RU-vid channel.

Unfortunately it makes it available to all our adversaries…and those who could build on to become new adversaries. Recall the release of nuke science to the world by Eisenhower’s administration Atoms for Peace which was suppose to increase nuclear energy, nuclear medicine etc. It also gave a blueprint for weapons with the idea that everyone had them no one would fear them. How much time and fortune did that save every country? The best of intentions can result in the worst of results.
