I tried out Void Linux because of this video... then tried out OpenSUSE... and came back to Void Linux because of you Jake. Kudos to you my friend, I love trying out hidden gems. Totally excited for the Hyprland setup I just noticed you posted 😊
Hi Jake, I agree with you that there isn't much coverage of Void. Looks like you'll be the go-to man for many new void users. You may have just convinced me to give it a try this weekend :) Thanks for your work, from australia
Well if that is the case, I hope people are patient with me, because I have only been on void for a short time. I'm glad to get it some more coverage though, it is definitely lacking in that area.
Great video. I tried Void a few years ago but I wasn’t ready for the void. Today, I’m using two OSs on two machines. I’m running Slackware and FreeBSD with DWM. I have nothing against Void Linux. It is a fine distribution. However, these days, I’ve moved away from rolling distributions and I’m doing a deep dive into the BSDs specifically FreeBSD. Personally, I don’t care for the direction Linux is going though I understand why it is doing so. It doesn’t suit me. The BSDs don’t seem interested in taking that path forward, so I’m learning it now with Slackware as my backup. Having said that, I’m looking forward to your series on Void Linux. It has always held a certain appeal to me. Take care and God bless.
I have never tried bad, I installed it once in a vm but I never used it. I have Slackware on my list of distros to check out, I always hear good things about it.
@@JakeLinux Freebsd is quite the change. I have been impressed with the advances that have been made in the past few years. As with Void, it takes time to figure everything out with FreeBSD. Slackware is also in this category. I used a series of videos by Old Tech Bloke to get Slackware up and running. I look forward to following your journey with Void Linux though installing it would constitute a major deviation from my objective to learn Freebsd. 😉
You're so careful during the installation, confirming each step. Some of the RU-vidrs just don't care and some even skip things. Keep up the good work!🎉
not specifically for this one, but I'd like to see a Herbsluftwm config done in python or something. Because I hear everyone say you can configure it with any programming language, and then they all do it with bash ;)
Thank you so much for this step by step. I'm still learning my way around Linux. I've been a windows user all my life and I just could not get partitioning down for the life of me. Still haven't brought my void system online, but I'm one step closer thanks to your vid.
great vid! I've been on Void for almost 3 months now and not looking back :) I say go with i3 it's a very common wm that lots of people use and people that are wanting to get started in tiling window managers usually go with.
I also like awesomewm but I feel it so easy and nice that I am getting bored with it. Love it tho. I guess I just need something more challenging like xmonad or dwm.
First off... Lots of activity in the comments!! Awesomeness! I'm happy for you Jake. I have been thinking about trying out Void. I just did my first Gentoo install on my home server machine and am trying to wrap my head around emerge atm but Void is next for my main machine and this will help. I was thinking of a few things that I would like to see from your channel (second to the growth it is showing) Vim Skeleton files with date and mod stamps ( you did a video with a macro that dates and sets a header) I dig your FZF use and would like you to show off some of those awesome menus. (people want an alternative to rofi and the D) ...there was something else...but I can't think of it right now...lolz. Anywho CONGRATS on the traffic brother.
@@JakeLinux Sorry I think I got hyped, thought you were saying wm, not vm XD. In my native language w is spelled as v sometimes! The hype got me! My bad! Still great video!!
Is is recommended to do the partitioning as shown at 10:00 when I want to install void linux on an empty drive? Like should I generally separate boot, root and home directory even on a fresh OS install on an empty PC? sorry for nooby question :)
Definitely do a separate home partition: that will let you reinstall your OS easily without losing any data. As far as boot on a separate partition: I’ve never done this, I don’t see a need
Title says base, but you were going XFCE until that fork in the install. There is a TUI based Void base image though. As for WM's, dusk or leftwm would be interesting to see. Both are pretty solid yet don't have a lot of attention.
Been called out on that by a couple of people, will poss do another video with base iso and maybe one using chroot, we will see. I've never looked into dusk, left is quite popular right now though.
@@JakeLinux I'm not calling out! 😀 But was hoping my base install a few months go, if I missed something that you will do, like something that syncs ntp - which I missed during my install.
I have tried DK, unfortunately I could not get in it to work on void, did not spend a lot of time but was still a bit of a headache. I want to check out DK, just need to build it on my artix partition.
I'm not against an i3 install, this series is not about being hard or simple, just want to have a walkthrough people can follow to get void going, I want to help get voids popularity up, it doesn't get the love I feel it deserves.
Like any distro it has good and bad points. I found it annoying that I had to update the xpbd-installer before getting updates! How very M$ of them. haha xbpd-install is annoying to type all the time. It is fast but again some simple wrappers to do the soft links would be nice. It's a throw back to the old days haha An OS should make management functions easier. Systemd is annoying for sure but an improvement over the old days or rc files and run levels. it's consistent too which is nice. I miss tab completion for package names like apt has. I'm still experimenting with it. I chose to start with XFCE but I plan on following your videos and see what you do with it. Thank you for the video. Others asked about disk encryption, I noticed their website has info on how to do that as well.
Yeah I'm not saying it's perfect, just perfect for me. There are definitely things that could be improved on, but that goes.for any distro. Xbps is by far my favorite package.manager it's fast and I like how it is broken out into individual binaries. I have never used disk encryption but yes it is documented, I will have to check it out and poss do a video on that since it seems to be a popular topic.
I was thinking of Hyprland, maybe. I don't know if it's in the repo's. If not, Sway. Or some wayland compositor. Qtile as a Wayland compositor if Sway is a no go.
Great Vid. i just got Void to run on a PiZero2W last night. Will try on x64 platform soon as well. Just a slight note. Ram in your video should be 4096, not 8, right?
There's a real obscure and minimal twm called sscrotwm. It's a fork of spectrwm and cuts out a lot, like the bar! heh. Maybe not for now, but near future? My sscrotwm build on void fails to start with no obvious logs. Arch builds and runs.
@@JakeLinux yes, scrotwm -> spectrwm, but sscrotwm is a fork of spectrwm. Per sscrotwm's github page, it's the shriveled scrotwm , and maybe there was a great schism then on the team/fans of scrotwm/spectrwm that weren't in favor of the name change/direction. idk.
I found you channel today, new sub here. I've used void before and it felt like home. I'm probably boring but I love openbox and it would be interesting to see what you'd do with it.
Welcome, glad to have you! I will do an open box setup in the near future but the voting for this turned up in favor of dwm. So that will be the initial wm, however, I plan on doing several WM install videos with this setup after it is finished.
nmtui (Network Manager Text User Interface) will work for network setup if someone uses the xfce iso and it is pretty easy to connect to either ethernet or wifi in a physical machine. I love your tutorials and I think it would be great if you make a video about installing void linux in chroot method with btrfs subvolumes. Hyprland wm in void is pretty good despite the fact that it is still in beta version. You can give it a try. Thanks for your videos about Void Linux.
Hyprland is getting a lot of push lately, I have used hypr but not hyprland, I use nmtui myself and it works great, I always suggest installing that in place of wpa_supplicant, but the install does not come with it, need to have connection before you can install. Glad you are enjoying the videos, I am possibly going to do an install vid with the base iso and in chroot, we will see. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it
@@JakeLinux... xfce iso comes with network manager pre installed. You can connect to network in the live environment as well as in the terminal with nmtui. On the other hand, base iso only have dhcpcd and wpa_supplicant. Although wpa_cli is also not that tough but there is some works to be done.
@@dr.asifakonjee good to know, thanks for the info, I didn't use the Xfce iso when I installed on my personal machine so I was not aware it was on there.
@@JakeLinux I've just attempted an install on one of my laptops. Your instructions worked perfectly. I did the local ISO install and didn't have any issues with sudo for the user or having to redo the user password. The only issue I had was no audio - but I installed pavucontrol and all is fine now.
hey i have a question. After a successful installation, i have to enter sudo password to run simple command like poweroff, reboot, shutdown etc. How can i run these without entering the password ?
Hey Jake, thanks for the video. Trying to setup Void for the first time. Some fonts are too large and not able to make sound working yet, but other than that all looks good.
Xmonad was a bear to get running and keep running, in fact I gave up for a while, I will make some videos on how to get it up and going as well. It is one of my favorite managers.
Now wait a minute the installer doesnt automatically add the regular user? Does that mean i also have to manually add my user to all the groups as well?
Hi there, I'd like to ask if you have any interest in looking into Splitlinux at some point? It's a security focused void-based distro. I've been fiddling with it, but I can't seem to wrap my head around it.
@@albertpiekarski4569 not sure if this is your issue but that happens to me once, I originally used the dd command to flash my USB, when it didn't read my drive I just reflashed my usb with balena etcher and then it worked, I don't know if the initial flash went bad because of using dd or if it was just a fluke but once I reflashed the bootable usb my drive was there.
Tried to follow this video to install void on virtualbox / vmware. I cant do it. Everytime the same problem with Grub. Have to use some other distro i guess
Fun fact, the audio on the live iso is muted or basically muted. I had to install xfce-pulseaudio-pulgin (i think) to be able to change the audio. I just don't know the pulse audio commands off the top of my head. Finally putting void over my Gentoo install. Debating if I want to do minimal install or go easy route and do local install. Thinking I will live in bspwm and qtile on this system.
Have to resort to using chatgpt to connect to wifi. Idk the method provided by void wiki just doesn't work for me. Although I'm 100% sure it's somehow my fault but still...
I would like to use scripts to create and view the virtual machines, since the virt-manager is heavy. Could you in future videos, explain how to run the script and what to install? Thank you!
@@JakeLinux Thank you so much! I have some problems that Son of Confiturecion Segurarie ... only nudoro qemu? or should I install anything else? By the way ... I also have to edit the file /etc /hosts? I appreciate your help, I am evaluated a lot about your videos!
@danieldiaz2093 make sure you have qemu, kvm, virt-viewer, and libvirt/virtlock packages installed then make sure to Start the libvirtd, virtlock, and virtlogd daemons, check in the void manual and it should show which services you need to run to get everything working.
Great video. The user creation bug only happens to me if using the xfce iso. If I use the base iso the user is created sucessfully. Hope this might help someone out.
@@JakeLinux I remember it correctly when I installed it on my computer a while back it completed as well. I am currently running gentoo at the moment. I really enjoyed my time with void linux. I may have to install it again sometime.
@@wolfgangeppingen1855 I have not used a cannon printer before, have you tried installing and using system-config-printer? What is the actual issue you are having? Does cups not detect the printer? Can't find the right driver? All set up, Just won't print ?
Sorry to be a pain but what is the correct syntax for symlinking services? The void linux handbook says e.g.: ln -s /etc/sv/ /var/service/ Yours says: ln -s /etc/sv// /var/service Notice the difference in the placement of forward slashes between your video and thr handbook? Does this not matter?
Hey Jake, I love void Linux but one reason is stopping me from using it. For some reason its kinda slow when opening apps such as Firefox loading web pages I don't know what's the problem. Im currently on arch and never had this issue if your able to could you please help me next time I install void. Great content btw
@@JakeLinuxthanks for the reply! I might reinstall void and also try finding the problem. I don't know if it's something with void itself or something else that can be fixed.
@@JakeLinux also you don't need to enable dhcpcd-eth0 if you enable dhcpcd. If you enable dhcpcd it'll enable all network devices. Whereas eth0 will only enable one.
Thought you were gonna do a base install, not XFCE install. As you said kinda like Arch clean installation. I never managed to do the base one on a real hardware. Always had to go installing XFCE and then removing stuff from XFCE that I don't use.
I know, I used the Xfce iso, but I didn't install Xfce, maybe I will do a video using the base iso and possibly one using chroot as well. That way I will cover all the install processes.
@@JakeLinux Hahaha... I tried to keep my comment short. I know, all the rage is Hyprland and I'm kinda quit watching them as I'm not interested in wayland at all.I just watch (listen) sorta just for the views.. But each to there own I say... 😄 Herbsluftwm, Dust, Leftwm are others, just saying... Lol LLAP 🖖
Herbstluftwm hands down ! ,,,,,,,,,actually spectrwm or bspwm would be fine. I would like a window manager with a bash config file so you could do an in depth config file and creation of our own desktops. I figure bash is the most likely the one language that most of us know.
@@JakeLinux I am still using Krohnkite, a plugin. I have yet to tinker with bismuth. krohnkite is VERY barebones, but fills my need to tilling in a full DE.
The typical guide of a "neckbeard" that don't explain any of the steps, just oh I'll choose "1GB" here and oopsie it is "way too much for a boot partition", so what is the actual right size? Not even a casual Linux user can toggle along. Who is this video for? What I learned is that Void is not worth it, it does not even have a choice of a guided partitioning. I watched both of your videos "install the hard way" and this one. I first was interesting in Void but I'll rather stay on Debian or even use Artix instead. Void what hassle... oh and for the devs good luck getting new users, because your going to need it.
@@PixelBoarthanks for sharing your thoughts. void is a great distro but it is not for everyone, just like arch isn't for everyone, and Debian isn't for everyone, and Gentoo ism't for everyone. Use what you like and what works for you. By the way, 300-500M is good for a boot partition.
@@JakeLinux I understand and you're right to some extent, it can never be "good" if there is only two hassle ways in how you choose to install it, as I see it, that means that every other distro that give you a choice is superior i.e. having a "easy" install and guides you through it all even the partitioning part, as well as having a "do it your own hard way". They've put more work and thought into it. Gentoo I can at least understand that it is that way, I don't see Void being that kind of a distro at all. I read about Void it sounded perfect: Minimalism, which I like, something in between "bleeding edge" and "stable"? At least those were the written words. Thanks for the reply and sorry for calling you a "neckbeard".
No worries, I've been called worse. I am personally working on an installation script for void that will help with partitioning because I do see your point, and others have commented on the installation process as well, which is a shame because in my.opinion it is a great distro choice.
@@JakeLinux I will give it a go with Void when I got some time to kill. That is awesome and will probably be helpful for many! Subscribed, you're cool.
@@PixelBoar well thanks I appreciate that, feel free to reach out if you have any issues, I may not always be able to respond immediately, but I try to do what I can.
