If you go further in the future with adding patches to dwm and st, git clone the repos from suckless. Might also be faster than downloading a tarball and unpacking it. Looking forward to this series.

I will definitely be patching, I usually just pick the specific diff files I need from the patch list and patch with those.

Hi, I dont normally comment in RU-vid, but just sharing this incase it's helpful. I had the same user issues after a new install, I wish I'd found your video first. I only had root and didnt have anything but the base system installed. Here's how I solved it, logged in as root > useradd -D user1 (I had hoped that'd add me to the default groups - but it didnt) > passwd -d user1 (removed the password the user had and set it as passwordless) > usermod -a -g WHEEL user1 (appends user1 to the WHEEL group) > su - user1 (allows you to change from root to user 1 in the same terminal window) From there, because I'd dropped the user1 password earlier, it auto prompted me to create and confirm a new user1 password. I gave it a reboot cause why not. and it worked. I consider myself barely past the beginner linux stage so this took a long time (over an hour) to piece it together reading various void docs and stuff from linux in general. Don't know if the above method is better or worse than the way you solved it, just providing options. Hope it helps someone.

Hey, so I'm following along in virt-manager and we're actually running dwm...startx usr/local/bin/dwm, and it fires up, but I have no kb input after that. I've tried meta+shft+enter, cntrl+alt+t, ctrl+alt+enter...several others. Nothing seems to actually open a terminal? It obviously worked in tty? Not sure where to go from here? Any ideas? SOLUTION -- The "mod" key defaults to "Alt" instead of "Win". Simple mistake.
@JakeLinux

Do you have st terminal installed?

@ScoldAudits
@ScoldAudits Год назад
@@JakeLinux Okay, no it's still not working. I can go into another tty and startx ./bla/bla/st, and it runs, but it won't let me start dwm from there. I'm guessing because dwm is already running in tty1? Not sure there. I doubt it's possible to run st in tty1 from tty4....is it? Like: startx /usr/local/bin/st -command to make it go to tty1 ??? Okay, so apparently x server has to be started from tty (it says only console users can start xserver, if I start st first, and try to run dwm from there.) I'm not sure.
@JakeLinux

@@ScoldAudits are you running startx /path/to/dwm or exec /path/to/dwm from tty?

@JakeLinux
@JakeLinux Год назад
Dwm can be fickle if you get too many patches going, it doesn't mean you can't use a lot of patches it just takes some work. I try to be very selective about the patches I use and make sure it is functionality that I want and need.

One thing I find not very practical is that almost all tutorial when it comes to Xorg the user install the complete Xorg package that includes components that no one is going to use specially in a virtual environment.

@notFudl

it is but dwm configuration is based upon modifying the source code it self so it doesn't make sense to distribute a build of it since people usually have their own version of the source code to build and use
