This is a very inexpensive but excellent motor glider. It's actually 2.54m not 2.6m. Very easy to assemble. Maiden coming soon.

The motor is decent too. not a rocket ship but still good. I found the standard aileron a bit anemic, so a good mix to use flaps with it makes it pop. the balance of the whole craft is excellent. small battery required - I used a 1500mah 3s but it also flew well with a 3000mah low rating multistar further back. inside the canopy you could park a mini minor as well. would be great for APM or other GPS / RTH - fpv solution. thanks for posting.

Hello Andrew, Congratulations for your videos very inspiring ! I would have your opinion on 2 gliders you know well i think ;) Which glider do you prefer the most between ASW28 V2 & Phoenix V2 2000, and why ? which one do you think is the best for thermal in plains ? In advance, thank to you, Ben.
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 5 лет назад
Phoenix V2 2000 for me, better all rounder. The ASW28 is cheap and looks great but doesn't work all that well as a thermal glider, fine for sloping and powering around.
@benwhite9971
@benwhite9971 5 лет назад
Thanks ! Too bad, I hesitated to buy it for a long time ... what do you think is missing to be a good thermal glider? Is it too heavy? Or is it due to its geometry or the profile of the wing not enough carrying the wing? because in this case keeping the fuselage very design and resistant we must perhaps be able to adapt another wing ... It could be an idea of experience for your video blog;) Anyway thank you very much for your wise advice, Hello from France to Australia, Benwhite.

It would be good for long range FPV, but it's not a good model to learn on. Better to learn on a pusher motor glider like a Bixler so you dont destroy the motor or prop when you hit nose first. You will crash often while learning

Have just received my Volantex 2000 ranger. Great kit and well built. I have one small issue with regards to the installation of the recv esc and the best way to connect the aileron wires. It is supplied with 2 Y leads. One for the aileron and the other for the flaps they both have numbers on them but it seems at odds with how I was told to connect them, The instructions do not mention any of these operations. Your advise would be appreciated Thanks Colin
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 4 года назад
Depends on your gear. If you have 8ch receiver and a good programmable transmitter, plug every control into it's own channel, then you can have fun with programming. If you have a simple transmitter and 6ch receiver then you have to use Y Leads and use one channel for ailerons and one channel for flaps.

I think the wing design doesn't scale down well for a foam model. It flies well at speed but doesn't float for thermal gliding. Needs more chord length or less weight. The T-tail is too flexy and the fuselage it too draggy. I use the ASW28 wing on a Phoenix 2000 fuselage for slope soaring and it's fantastic.
@leecourington2536
@leecourington2536 5 лет назад
Ok. So the big question Andrew - ASW 28 or the Phoenix 2000 V2 if pushed to live with only one glider. Would the decision be different if it was going to be used primarily for FPV?
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 5 лет назад
For powered flying on FPV they would be about equal, for actual gliding I prefer the Phoenix. The ASW28 is kind of twitchy and prone to stalling unless you're on the sticks maintaining the airspeed.

Being a glider it's not designed to be flown on power continuously. If you're catching thermals the battery would last for hours.

So what would you say is better between this and the phoenix 2in1 for soaring?
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 7 лет назад
Phoenix Evolution 2.6m config wins easily. It flies smoothly and thermals easily. The ASW28 looks great but doesn't work so well as a foamy model.

Would you happen to have ever flown a F,lyzone Calypso?

No, it looks quite good

What are you using to test the servos?

HobbyKing servo tester

What are you using to strengthen the flap, aileron, etc. hinges?
@AndrewNewton

Either blenderm tape or smear of hot glue

Thanks for replying - er . . . what's blender tape? I've got seven different types of tape in my box, but have never heard of 'blender tape'. PS. Like your show. Clear and easy to follow.

Blenderm (dumb auto correct) also called hinge tape from HobbyKing. It's light flexy medical tape

Thank you. PS. I've ordered the plane! And all the bits . . .

Do you know which foam the wings are made from?

Thought you'll like to know that the ordered ASW28 arrived, somewhat damaged. The canopy was cracked, one of the fixation pins was missing, and the control horns and some of the screws were absent. I got the impression that the damage to the packaging was deliberate - not difficult, the packaging is minimal to say the least. Anyway, I've contacted Banggood and am waiting for their response. It's really a question of more delay - it takes at least a fortnight for anything to arrive from Banggood. When I'll finally be able to build and fly the glider I'll be considering upping the motor power. Can you advise on which motor, and, probably which battery?
@AndrewNewton

Very annoying Robin. The canopy is a weak design. I left the motor as it was. Chat to Allen Moore about mods, he has done a lot more flying with his than I did.

i have one for fooling about cheap and cheerful cost about 90 eur in germany fuselage is ok wings are wobbly and trailing edges waaaay too thick there is no dihedral tail plane same with a 3 S and decent motor it will climb ok but the glide ratio is very poor i have a calypso and its a much better plane with a 2x better glide ratio and flies like a real plane...
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 7 лет назад
Yes it makes me want to try a decent glider.

hi andrew as mentioned the calypso is about as good as it gets in foamies for bigger intermediate stuff the siren is ok but is not strong enough for sloping if you want 4m+ then rippin in germany is good value for money but involves some work i have 3 from them and am working on a 7 m ventus now from another german maker

Certainly doesn't work very well for these wings.
