Volcano Watch 2024: Dark Days for Grindavík

The Grapevine was on location in Grindavík January 15, 2024, to report on the latest situation just over 24 hours after an eruption first began just 450 metres north of the town. That initial erupting fissure was followed by another just on the outskirts of town.
Though lava flow from the main fissure that opened just before 8:00 Sunday morning has slowed and flow from the smaller southern fissure appears to have ceased, the Icelandic Meteorological Office maintains that the eruption is not over.
GPS measurements show that land rise continues under Svartsengi, indicating the magma chamber there is filling back up - this is different than the way the land was behaving following the December 18, 2023, eruption at Sundhnúkagígar. Experts are evaluating the data and measurements to determine what that could mean for the immediate future.
The Met Office also says it is clear that the magma tunnel stretches beneath Grindavík.
Three houses were destroyed by encroaching lava that flowed into the town from the southern fissure on Sunday. Lava from the northern fissure also flowed over Grindavíkurvegur and the hot water pipes running from Svartsengi Power Plant into Grindavík. Crews are now working to restore hot water access to the town to avoid further damage to infrastructure as temperatures sit below 0º C.

Thank you, Jon. I hope your parents are holding together OK. I, like many others, are thinking of them and their neighbors and their loved ones, like you, with love and care and concern. I woke up yesterday (Sunday) to Professor Shawn Willsey's live drone flyover. It was overwhelming to watch the fissure close to the town open up and grow within a few short minutes. Ineffable.

Actually there have been studies done, where patients in hospital were prayed for in various religions and by non religious people. The patients did not know who were control and who were subjects of experiment. Compared to the control group who werent prayed for, the subjects had shorter hospital stays, less infections, less depression. Study is referenced in a book by George Leonard called "The Silent Pulse" There was also an experiment done where a number of Transendental meditators ( i think about 200, from memory), decided to try to bring their towns crime rate down through meditation. Its results showed significant and dramatic drop in crime rate during the meditation period that cannot be attributed to any other changes.

@@matzbr5tw You have to understand how large the US actually is. The closest American/Canadian border crossing from Atlanta (in the Southeast) is Buffalo, NY which is 1500 K from Atlanta. The furthest one would be near Seattle Washington, on the west coast, which is 4300 K away. I don't which volcano you are talking about but it's almost certainly out west where the majority of our volcanoes are. There is also the fact that there are several very large volcanoes, like the great caldera under Yellowstone National Park, that get a lot of attention from the disaster media, and are "over due for an eruption." Yellowstone is technically an active volcano but it hasn't erupted in several hundred thousand years and is not likely to erupt for another 100K , although it will eventually. When it does it will change earth's climate in a way that would cause the downfall of human civilization.

The unpredictability of the details of how this eruptions will unfold is self evident. The fact that this is not over. The idea to close off the whole town until the full extent of eruption is over is a good one. Very gratefull for your continued reporting of this unfolding tragedy.

At least they had some of that berm done, it’s too bad they didn’t get more of it done earlier. You can see on the Sunday video how the big river of very liquid lava is being guided west and if that wall was not there it would have flowed south right into the town. Something positive.

If I remember correctly, from the eruption a few years ago, we could see the fountain of lava shooting up in the air. That's where high pressure gasses were venting, but from the same vent, out of view, were rivers of magma, flowing under the black scab of hardened lava. So, the black rocky lava is acting like a skin that is filling up and welling up with liquid lava underneath. So, later, an outburst of lava could suddenly happen at any of the edges of the black lava to allow a big flow of lava out from under it.

At 5:50 he says, "some harbored hopes of moving back into town soon..." I'm perplexed. If I lived in Grindavik, these eruptions took place, lava flowed into town, a life is tragically lost in a crevasse, caused by one of hundreds of earthquakes that tear the town up, I'm moving! I'll get my stuff and move to where my next-door neighbor isn't an active volcano! Grindavik should be abandoned, nobody should live there anymore. This seems simple, yet residents want to move back?! NO! Go live further away from volcanoes! On a side note, I'm _very_ curious about homeowner's insurance in this town!

Pretty luck this was not another Laki which produced a 25 km fissure eruption with lava fountains 1 km or more into the sky. The Laki eruption killed more than 50% of Iceland's livestock and about a quarter of its human population. It also significantly affected Europe and other reigions with the HUGE amount of gases that it produced and may have contributed to the French Revolution.

Look at the bright side. There are many refugees in the world, at least Grinvikings are refugees within their own country. There are many victims of war and human evil. Somehow I think it is easier to overcome destruction caused by nature. Saying that, I realize this is a very heavy time for the people of Grindavík.
