I drove Amarok 1 year ago at dealer's center. It was Rancho version - I liked it very much and still I regret I didn't buy it when I was able to do that. Maybe Hilux also good, but even specs says Amarok is a bit better.
sebomalebo my friend's 2008 did already around 400k miles with factory engine and clutch ...with no mechanical issues..name one Amarok that can do that
Comparing this to a Hilux may work for a video review. However, put on a few hundred thousand miles and you will find out the VW is guaranteed to cost you more money in upkeep and maybe even leave you stranded because of some stupid german electrical issue....
***** didn't know they still made rangers. One thing we build better than everyone else is pickups. The full size Toyota Tundra is just a reverse engineered ford f150. Trust me no one builds better trucks than us.
I guess it's because historically if your vehicle breaks down in the american deserts, steppes, snow etc. it can mean death, cell reception still not good everywhere either, and low density means hours can go by without anyone coming by. Not a problem in europe or in jamaica, that is small, tropical and has high density population, i don't think anyone could die even if they tried. Today for most people there's no reason anymore, but history is history i guess.
Do a camparison in 10 years time, not when its brand new. If the Amarok is as reliable as the Hilux after 10 years, then it is worthy of the same status...
There's no comparison at all. Amarok is way more refined, just as capable if you deck it out, uses waaay less fuel. Maybe not as reliable, but I'd take it any day over hilux.
You don't have to wait 10 years. Amarok turns shit after warranty runs out. It has DPF problems, dual flywheel issues, air cabin fan issues. ABS will kill you off road if you forget to turn it to off road mode. The cheapo bearings on rear axle run out on me after 150000km. However if you use it as a mall crawler (as i do) the comfort is definitely way better then Hilux. If i had to choose again it would be Amarok with all it's faults over Hilux. Good car, just not reliable.
Agree. All Amarok. Anything the the H could do better he had an excuse. Here in Australia Hilux is king. No Amarok parts outback. There is a huge range of H models too from basic to luxury.
I got to admit, they passed the point of which..can you get as much parts as the Hilux and for the same price worldwide?, the pricing of which it would cost to fix / repair as the Hilux?, is the electronics and general reliability as strong in all points as the Lux?
Guess it would simply be to small and expensive to compete with the likes of an F-150. Yet I do wonder the same, especially since it is made in Argentina.
As an American I was at first disappointed that we don't get this truck, but then when I heard what engine it had, immediately I didn't care anymore. You simply cannot haul anything with that little power and torque. The American marketplace would snicker at it, and then proceed to buy a truck worth of hauling their horse trailer at speed
The Amarok May Be Better Bulit But If I Was Stuck In The Artic Or A Desert. The Hilux Is The One That I Would Like To Be In After A Few Hundred Thousand Miles The Hilux Would Still Be Working Perfectly. Whereas The VW will Have Some Expensive Technical Issue.
I live in Central America, and here the Hilux is the number one selling truck, and it's proven it self well, and the Amarok wasn't well received , people were skeptical including myself. t finally got a chance to do some off roading in it, I was impressed, just wasn't on par with the hilux. I appreciated the car like feel and comfort, today the Amarok is mostly used as business trucks for the government. The Hilux is still known as the " workhorse" around here.
There are still people living in South,Central America? I thought they had all snuck into the USA as fucking illegals since everyone I meet is a speck who can't speak English!
I've got a 2014 3.0L Turbo Diesel Hilux. No modifications and I've found the fuel efficiency to be better than our old 2003 2.8L Diesel Hilux which we had for 10 years. So when the host says he's guzzling fuel compared to his companions V10 or whatever, I wonder whether it's because of the modifications the Hilux in the video had (thereby increasing the weight and more drag) or because he's probably changing gears a lot more than is required? Any which way it's all down to the individual taste but I'm happy with the Hilux, you can keep your Amarok.
I wouldn't pay too much attention to the host, he's absolutely clueless! Hilux for me, I don't want a "pretty, refined truck" I want a tough, dependable one.
try to run down the stairs, hit a tree, put it on the sea, hit a wooden buildings, drop it from 10 meters, hit it with wrecking ball, set it on fire, drop it from the top of building ... see, it's nothing compare to the hilux ....
Indeed. Top Gear cemented the Hilux's reputation for reliability, and for good reason. The only people who think VWs are still reliable these days, are people who don't know what they're talking about, I'm afraid.
I don't know what he's talking about with fuel consumption! My Hilux gets 8.3 L/100kms whereas the Amarok gets about 7... It's more economical but not by a whole heap.
The Amorok is nice but the Hilux is more reliable and you never need to fix it, the Amorok will probably cost you 2x as much as Hilux with all the repairs and maintenance.
I´m deep into the Toyota camp. But where I live there are many Amaroks drivng around, so I felt i had to test one. The dealer had a top of the line as a demo car. With the 8-speed automatic. And to say the least i was highly disappointed. The car itself drove good at the A-roads. On B-roads it felt better than the HiLux. But i was left with an impression that VW had´t thought the car trough. the reversing camera was misplaced, under the tailgate (wrong word, I know) where dirt collected and was hard to clean off. The messages in the displays was written in a really bad language. "Put the choosing stick in parking"(directly translated from Norwegian). The felt build quality of the exterior was not quite up to the level i had found in the Toyota. But then we have the engine and gearbox. The lack of a low range and lockable centre diff is a turnoff for me. I'm not entirely sold on the 2.0 liter engine. I find it to be too small. But the programming of the gearbox is the most horrid thing I've ever experienced in a car/truck. During any form of acceleration the engine shot up to 4000rpm. The noise was horrid. When we had reached our speed the engine fell to 1200rpm and the whole car started shaking. there were so many times i had to oversteer the gearbox. And to make matters worse, in uphills it started out in 5th gear, then up to 7th, down to 2nd, up to 4th, before I in furious anger put it in Manual and did the shifting myself. All this in a constant speed of 55km/h. That is not how I want any of my cars to behave. I love the design of the Amarok. I would gladly have accepted a entry level amarok with single turbo, manual gearbox, lockable centre with low range and no reversing camera to worry about. But I do not want to pay for it.
you guys should do a review of the up coming Ford F-150. I'd like to see what you guys think about it. It'd be best if you did an unconventional comparison as well, just to keep things really interesting. F-150 vs. Hillux vs. Range Rover. I think that might be sorta cool. You could compare everything people look for in a truck: towing capacity, off-road capability, ruggedness, value, ect...
Except that your Ram would fall apart after a few years, whereas the Hilux would live on forever, its like a cockroach, not even a nuclear explosion can put an end to it, hypothetically speaking ofcourse. In-short, its THE best pick-up truck bar-none.
Ahmed Irfan Yeah you're pretty delusional. Rams dont fall apart. The Hilux is not the best truck either. All the ones in this video are modded way past stock. There are plenty of Rams owners in the million mile club. Ask anyone with a turbo Cummins Diesel engine.
Ahmed Irfan New Hilux's and new Toyota's in general are not as reliable as they were previously know for. Plus current Hilux's are way out of date. Drive a Hilux back to back with almost any other modern ute and you will see how old school teh Hilux is. I have a PX Ranger and drive a Hilux with work, and have to say I much prefer driving The Ranger than the Hilux. Ill have to wait and see what the Rangers long term reliability is since It's only a year old.
Ben Jarrott A friend has an MY10 Hilux diesel, bought it new 5 years ago, almost touching 300k km's on the odometer now, aside from a few squeaks and rattles, the truck runs flawlessly and not once, and I literally mean, not once has it gone wrong. As far as the ride is concerned then yeah I do agree these light trucks are not as comfortable as they can be or should be. The Toyota Hilux and the Nissan Navara/Frontier, both could use softer suspension, no doubt about that.
Had a Mitsy L200 V6, pretty good, but thirsty and liked to break rear springs, then tried a Lexus RX300, lovely on road but it got real boring replacing bits that were ripped off underneath every time it went off road + no low range.. I have a Hilux MK7 now and I love it, does everything I need, when I need it too. when you get stuck just select low range and let the tyres down and your on your way (so far never had to use my shovel). Shes not that thirsty I average 23mpg pretty good for a automatic lump. Personally i will never make the mistake again of buying a 4x4 without a low range box.
VW should consider selling the Amarok in the U.S. This would please urbanite hipsters who love their VW's, they rarely go off-road. VW should bring the Amarok to the US and add an option for 3.0L Diesel that is the very capable Touareg Diesel auto four wheel drive.
Big competition in the US for pickups, it would be really difficult and expensive for VW to do that, but as soon as america will fully embrace diesel like Europe (and it will happen eventually) they might try the pickup route.
I am a fan of this channel and most of the time I agree with the opinions presented by the numerous hosts but in this case the comparison is not accurately conveyed. There are 5 criteria’s to consider in order to appreciate their pros and cons. The first one is the time each model has been offered in the market, in the case of the hilux model IMV, which is produce since 2005 while the amarok is, produces recently. Liability is the second criteria, which Toyota in all it´s models has no adversaries. Third are the engine´s configuration and the different hp offerings with in the models. The forth criteria is the different continents where it is sold. The last criteria are the most important of all them, supply and demand, in which the truck has to be the number one in sales.
3LD4D in the Hilux is one amazing engine & it's an extremely fun truck to chuck around on the farm. But must say of all the trucks/utes come rain or shine give me an HSV or FPV, don't care if I can't go off-road I'll compromise for that addictive speed & power you can get.
Well-well.... Our Amarok is a 2011 BiTdi. The vehicle has only delivered the best for us and until now it has only done long distance hauling and bush driving and off roading with a ton's worth of camper on the loadbay. As for the Hilux fans out there, yes you have much to lean on, but the Amarok truely delivers. Have never tried the 8 speed auto box, but ours still has a manual box with low range and diff lock coupled with an amazing offroad functionalty program which most other trucks do not have. Point is you can still get the Amarok with manual box, low range, diff lock in South Africa (2L130KW).. Pitty you cannot get the V6 with a manual box. So to all the bad critics out there, the Amarok has only given us its best being almost ten years old. One reason the Amarok gives a much gentler ride is its long leafspring setup. Even fitting a EFS Elite suspension with a five blade pack has not caused it to become a harsh ride. The worst news out is that Ford Australia and Ford South Africa is in the design stage for building of the 2023 Amarok lineup. Added note: Found this... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Nox1XQosFh8.html
No low range.. yes so i presume that you are driving the 8 speed auto.. Elaborate on that a little and get people to see the light on what really lies in the drivetrain.. I do feel you missed a lot of technical facts, improvements and features that this car brings to the table in comparison to the Hilux's and a lot of other 4x4 pickups in this market segment. Anyways.. buy what you feel is the best..
Agreed, I was looking out to see if it was the 8 speed auto, got a glimpse of the shifter on the interior shots. IMHO the ZF 8-speed makes up a huge part of what makes the Amarok so damn good, and fuel efficient. First gear is basically your low range, and on the highway and cruising around town the close ratios keep the engine either in the power band or at peak efficiency. The gearbox alone is massively ahead of everything else in the market in both refinement and performance.
All that matters when comparing vehicles is...RELIABILITY!!.. RELIABILITY..RELIABILTY! Not much good heading into the Outback in a flash ute that breaks down as soon as it gets out of range from the dealership!
Depends where you live, in australia i would prefer reliability too since everything tries to kill you. In western europe it's really not that important, rescue is one phonecall away and there's reception everywhere, you'll hardly have to wait more than half an hour anywhere.
Sorry but a little too much talking that was not clear or to the point. Making the Off road test in ambient mood edit removed the highlight of the vid. It was not a bad vid but I needed more defined information regarding details, space, drivetrain etc. and perhaps the "vs" title is promising to much also, since it was not a real vs. Never mind though - The question is will you XCAR take this as your next crew car if you should replace the HI-LUX ?
I don't disagree with anything you've said here BUT what you've noted here about the difference between the Hilux and the VW is a similar story between the Hilux and most of its competitors. The Hilux is way underpowered now compared to the Mazda BT-50, the Isuzi D-Max, Nissan Navara etc. They all ride better than the Hilux due to them using modern suspension systems. I could go on but bare in mind the Amarok is made in Argentina and ALL of the pickups I've mentioned, including the Hilux, destroy the Amarok when it comes to reliability.
+lapamful Hilux and Ranger are also made in Argentina. Dont get the point about that. Amarok is also made in VW Hannover plant. Toyota Hilux also in Venezuela.
I have a 2016 Hilux and Ive got to say 3 words to all these Hilux die hards... TIMING. CHAIN. TENSIONER. Mine is rattling like hell... I don't think the new hiluxs are built like the old ones, with cost being a big factor in manufacturing. I've just bought a 2012 Amarok Ultimate also, so my opinion will be as unbiased as they coming owning both. Check back in 6 months time and I'll give you the low down!!!
@marijanmahne that's a good question. The Amarok has a better (ZF) gearbox that changes faster, but the Hilux isn't a bad ute.. if they were the same price, I'd chose the hilux, but the Toyota is much more expensive so I would go the Amarok
The only people who are going to buy the VW are people who just go to the shops and are brand snobs. They won't mind it breaking down or falling apart since in their eyes, VW can do no wrong. I'll take the legendary Toyota any day.
I wonder why we never see any US trucks in all these legendary drives to Arctic or places like that. I mean it would be good advertising for their trucks so they could support such events. At least one of them can do something special from time to time. Or maybe they have done it but I have missed it?
Here in South Africa, there are basically only 3 workhorses for farmers, construction people and the general family man i.e. the Isuzu KB the Hilux and Mazda B series. The Amarok is relatively new here and according to local vehicle reviews competes mainly with the newer Ford/Mazda and the new Isuzu, while the Hilux does not even feature in reviews due to it's age and lack of updates. The irony of this issue is that the Hilux has been the "BEST" selling pick up since the 70's till present, albeit being years behind with their current Hilux range. I'm sure this testament enough to support the 'bullet proof' reputation of a tried and tested vehicle. I'm just not sure how the Amarok or any other brand will compete with the new Hilux due for launch later in 2014/2015.....waiting very patiently for the arrival of the revival of the KING OF PICK UP's
Nice Truck but If it doesn't have a low range gearbox they aren't even close to being in the same league. If you just need a good "crew car" any car based SUV would do the job just as well
The Amarok takes it in every catergory? I challenge you to load & unload goods from the rear bed ( such as a 50" LCD T.V !) And then see how practical it is! The clearance is a little higher than the Toyota plus the tailgate is larger, making it more difficult to load & unload goods . You have to climb in to retrieve your goods!
You compare a Hilux fitted with offroad gear with a standard Amarok, how biased towards the Amarok can you really be? Not to mention that the Amarok cost a lot more, at least in Norway (approx Prizes in dollar, Hilux 64 000, Amarok 97 000), both with most stuff, biggest engine etc
correction, they aren't sold in the U.S. and Canada, everywhere else in North America has em. But they aren't sold in the U.S. and Canada, because mainly of the U.S.'s strict emissions, and Canada decided to connect their emission standards with ours for a "closer connection" I guess. And there's the stupid chicken tax that the government won't let go of. While its unlikely they we will every get the Hilux, because of the Tacoma. Volkswagen does need help regaining market share in the U.S. market, and the Amarok, could be a better competitor to the Tacoma here than the Frontier. But who knows, Volkswagen may mimic Toyota and create a separate Pickup made for the U.S./Canadian markets and maybe based on the VW cross blue SUV.
I'd rather see the European Ranger come to the US than this Amarok. It's ugly and small looking. As the F150 gets bigger and bigger, the ranger has a spot again.
Ford says that they aren't bringing it here cause of the size of the Ranger is too close to the F-150, but if you go to a ford dealership in Mexico or Saudi Arabia, Ford sells both the Ranger along with the F-Series in those countries. Ford isn't telling us the truth.
+Dan Holroyd Yes but this guy never even touched specs of the Amarok regarding the "no low range".. Read up on the 8 speed auto this thing has and it might make you think..
Its refined, it consumes less, it will break twice till 100.000miles :) the 2.0tdi are bad engines, they fail alot, just like the 1.4 TSI engines. Just ask any mechanic which car comes most. I own a car dealership, so i kinda know what breaks a lot... And well my cousin happens to own an amarok, at 8000km he had an engine failure... at 98.000km he got a new engine from VW due to a mechanical failure, now he is at 150.000km and hopes nothing major breaks again.
+cdude100 The Amarok has Higher Payload than most of your pick-ups of the same size. Take the new Tacoma. The SR5 had the highest payload. 1620lbs. In Norway the Amarok is sold with two different sets of suspensions, giving us two payloads. So the 180hp automatic Amarok has a payload ranging from 2134- to 2561lbs. Payload on pick-ups in the rest of the world is in general beter than in the US. the Tacoma TRD sport had the highest towing capacity of 6800lbs. The Amarok has 7054lbs. You can't compare pick-ups from outside the US with the Silverados, F-series, Tundra and RAM. they are in another league. The Tacoma, Colorado and Dakota is the same size and are therefore comparable. And more often than not the trucks from outside the US comes out on top. If we limit our view to payload and tow. US trucks always has lager engines than what we have in Europe. That's just how it is. But who buys a pick-up to take it to the race track? Do you really need power to compete with a Corvette? 180hp and 295ft/lb is adequate. It´s not much but enough. I do agree with you that a 2 liter engine is to small in such a large vehicle. I´m really considering buying the new HiLux. In that there is either a 177hp, 331ft/lb 2.8 liter diesel or a 150 hp, 295ft/lb 2.4 liter diesel. I believe the 2.4 has what it takes for me, as the payload an towing numbers are the same on both engines.
+Torvikholm your joking nobody buys a 1500 for work they always get the 2500 wich has a payload of 3200+ and towing of 15,000 maybe if they made a heavy duty version were the suspension won't go to shits after the first 30,000 of extreme use then they got their foot in the door
+cdude100 Didn´t you read what i stated my initial respond with? I don't give a shit about the RAM, F-series or Silverado. Had the Amarok been launched in the US, which it won't, It would not compete against those lorries. I am aware that the 250(0) or HD models have higher payload numbers than the Amarok. But saying the RAM 2500 has a higher payload than the Amarok is like saying a Antonov 225 has higher payload than a Cessna Skyhawk. In both cases it's true. But they are not the same size. Not made for the same job. Yes the VW and the RAM are both pick-ups, as in the same way as the Cessna and Antonov both are planes. But they are not made to do the same job. I am aware there are several different models of your large trucks, ranging from the light duty 150(0) up to commercial 550(0) models, or what ever. But the light duty 150(0) are still larger than the Amarok. What the Amarok would compete against would be, as previously mentioned, the Tacoma, Colorado and Dakota, to take some. I am aware that you use your 250(0) for heavy hauling. In Norway you need a commercial drivers license for driving those trucks. Therefore the marked for them are fading away. Also for moving something in the range of 12 000lbs we use trucks in the size of the Volvo FH16 750. They often have cranes and a large bed to put the ting onto. They also cost the same as a RAM 2500 due to taxes. If you don't have a Commercial drivers license you are not allowed to drive a car with the maximum total weight of no more than 7716lbs pulling a trailer with the maximum total weight of no more than 7716lbs. This is the same all over Europe. Also. I'm the foreigner. Why do I feel I'm writing your language better than you?
+Torvikholm your a 15 year old little shit because they always point out the grammer issue and jump to the over facts this thread is done goodbye i aint reading any other replies
You can say the stuff about the amarok being used by the dutch army cause they got the best deal from Volkswagen not cause its the best 😂 saying VW's are good because of it is like saying a Audi rs8 is as relaible as a supra cause its a German police car its Just utter utter nonsense. Folks buy a Hilux.
In documentaries and news, almost all such cars I see, whether it's driven by IS or UN or if it's in the middle east, Africa or the arctics, are Toyotas. Coincident?
Put that amarok in the real workhorse world and see how long It lasts . They got issues here in Australia now . They just stop for no reason OH that's right computer says no !! I can't believe you so easily hood winked by a car like ride and interior. It must have been a Volkswagen paid for comparison ,
john oliver It's faster, more horse power, etc. than the Hilux. Now with the new twin turbo 8 speed automatic it really is a game changer. I've owned my Amarok for almost three years and have almost 100K KM on it and it still runs and rides like the day I bought it. Just go drive one and see for yourself which one you like best.
i can't understand why the hell car makers build cars with headlights without proiectors????its just the dumbest thing they can do to a cars lighting system
1:40 there is a story that an american security company was ambushed in Iraq despite getting a few shots in its engine block their ford f350 got them back to safety .
