I have a 1970 Karmann Ghia in Seattle. Just found this video. Today my ignition no long returns back after the car starts, keeping the "starter" going even though the car is running. Would doing this replacement in the video solve this issue? It feels like a spring is broke but not sure what causes the key to return after car starts.
Well, it’ll definitely help to understand what the issue is. It can be the worn out key or the ignition switch itself. I don’t think is the ignition lock. Try to replace your key and if it doesn’t help then you need to repair/replace the ignition switch.
I’m having this same problem with my bug so hopefully the switch replacement will cure it. It’s definitely a struggle turning the key and trying not to run the starter too much, while also trying to bounce it back just right so it won’t die.
They all have screws. It can be a different set up. Try to remove the horn cover and see if there are screws or they can be on the back side of the steering wheel. They are probably covered with some cover.
Hi Tomas, Should be the same method. The steering wheel needs to be removed the same way and the springy pin on the ignition lock needs to be pushed in order to remove it.
Sevan Locks & Doors ok, great thank you for reply. I am having trouble with my ghia. I dint know if my ignition switch is shot, or if my Starter is bad...my ghia doesnt start at all. Battery is perfect. So its either the starter, or the ignition switch...
The video showing how to replace the ignition lock cylinder. If you can turn the key but can’t start the car, replacing the lock is not gonna fix the issue. It can be the starter or fuel pump. I wish i could help more but unfortunately i’m not mechanic.
Sevan Locks & Doors your words are worth million dollars. Like u said, my key works fine, and turns properly. So, i am going to replace the starter. Thankyou sir

That’s not a lock tumbler. That’s a lock cylinder or you can call it ignition lock that goes to the ignition switch. Lock tumbler is a tumbler that located inside the ignition lock.
