This video was a life saver. I lost my only key for my 1973 Thing and got to the point where I needed to get the core out. Without the key I could not disengage the steering wheel lockout, so I couldn't pull the whole assembly. Knowing to press in on that spring clip to get the core out was NOT something I was going to figure out unless I had been able to remove the assembly and look at it from all directions. Thanks again!
I was supposed to drill out a lock cylinder today at work, just to get a new project rolling around. it's a Super Beetle, had to bolt the pan back to it too. Anyways I drill dead center right into the lock... And I just brain farted and went clear through it. Looks like I probably damaged the steering wheel lock mechanism too. Thanks for this video, I'm more confident that I can fix it now. Wish I would've looked this up immediately before i even picked up the drill.
i saw a 72 super beetle for sale where the ignition tumblr was shot so this helps me a lot deciding whether or not to get the bug. thanks for the info.
whoever couldn't make a copy of your key because of the age I call bull crap on whoever told you that I just went and had a key made just from a code today and they were able to.. thanks for the video I'm going to have to do the same thing on my ignition someone changed out my ignition so the door key and ignition key were a different cut.

I start a 72 project today I turn the steer wheel and it’s got locked the keys I have won’t turn over You think I need to change ignition Celynder in regard to free the steer wheel ?
I have a 1970 Volkswagen beetle, however when I tried to remove the ignition, it seems it doesn't have that small tab. I'm not sure what to do aside from drilling a hole on the side?
Hey Jimmy, I'm not sure what you are trying to ask. But if I guess the answer is, the grease is not necessarily to help the cylinder slide in, but for the end of the cylinder that makes contact inside.
@@vwbeetlesfordummies ahh okay, but my issue is, on the inside of the space where the ignition cylinder goes there appears to be a small pin like thing on the left that's stopping the actual cylinder from going in all the way
Thanks for taking the time to shoot this video. I had 71 Super Beetle for 25 years and still enjoy looking through my Bentley's manual. I've had my 91 Jetta diesel for 30 years and enjoy it as much as my Beetle. It has 318,000 miles on it.
