Some reviewers say that the suspension of the Celerio is too soft and others say it is too firm. This means that the suspension is spot on, right?

I feel like the fuel economy didn't get put into consideration that much... but speed did. How is speed more relevant than fuel economy on a cheap small city cars? 63.5 mpg vs 42.4 mpg both while driving not that economically.. 21 mpg difference is a fare amount, that would save a lot of money over the long run... The people who consider these cars do prefer cheaper running cost than speed. Otherwise they would go buy bigger more powerful cars..
@MrSensible2
@MrSensible2 6 лет назад
abinlukasabraham Since new, my Celerio has averaged about 71.5 mpg. Admittedly, I have a very gentle left foot and do a fair amount of motorway driving but you can get outstanding mpg from the Celerio. By way of comparison, the best I could squeeze out of my old Kia Picanto was 56.5 mpg...
@abinlukasabraham
@abinlukasabraham 6 лет назад
Peter Growcott 71 mpg is great! That's what I mean.. Compare that with the Up, there's so much money to be saved there on the long run.. And that's what a small city car is mainly about..
@RennieAsh

abinlukasabraham that being said some people may not like the tin box feel that the Suzuki likely has. The others while not luxury trade some economy and practicality for better comforts. It comes down to individual needs :)

Bharath Kumar I think it’s more the other way around, you don’t have a religious ceremony when you buy a new car, whereas dealerships in India do Hindu rituals of welcoming the car into the family. On the other hand, cheaper cars are more appreciated in India over features, as the fact that it’s a car is good enough as many people don’t have one (comparatively speaking of course as India’s population is significantly higher), where as in Europe everyone is almost expected to have a car, it’s what extras it offers that make it desirable. Also, safety features in cars for India are at the bottom of the list, in Europe they’re very near the top.

He's being quite fair and mentions the low price multiple times. Besides that, after spending the money, all you have left is the car. Usually I don't think about the price anymore.. but about the product I have. That being said, the VW is the best way to go. Not that I'd every buy such a bland brand ;-)

VladJoachim my 1.0 MPI (60 hp) drives pretty well too, no squeaks or rattles, it's a true VW. the engine is surprisingly responsive for such a small naturally aspirated one and gets up to 100 km/h in 9 seconds which isn't too bad for 60 hp. however, mine does consume a quite a bit of oil, and it's a 2017… I'm not really for all this downsizing and adding turbos to lawnmower engines just because people need to get 300 mph out of a petrol (!!!) car

It seems you already made up your mind before the test because you said that you were surprised by the performance of the Celerio, but you "still" think it is worth getting the Hyundai, and your preference was the Up. From this test I think the Celerio was the far better car, it had more space, it was more economical. Also I preferred the interior because it was more formal and did not appear over designed, which gives a tacky appearance.

I have an VW UP! Move up with the 60hp engine. (Non turbo) I've also recently had an i10 as hire car. Although the hire car was higher spec than my UP!, I found road noise was awful, it wasn't a nice drive either. My UP! is more comfortable, just as nippy around the town, much less road noise and also much more involving and fun to drive. It always leaves me with a smile on my face. And to top it off it's very eco. I get 45mpg around the city. Yes, it isn't as quick acceleration on the motorway as the others or even this one tested here, but that's all. It doesn't struggle except by hill on the motorway but you get a run up and your ok. It is more than nippy enough around town. I simply love it!

Actually, I would prefer my mobile phone's navigation, screen quality and speed over almost any slow car infotainment system. I've experienced quite a few (included the i10's) and only expensive cars (above Golf VII/A3/Megane/308) get decent processor speeds. Even then you're better of firing up AndroidAuto/Carplay instead of proprietary nav. Moreover, you don't pay a million pounds for an already outdated map update without accurate traffic info like Waze or Google Maps. You can spent the money you saved on the sat nav on superior interior quality, engines and handling.

I average 42 mpg. 37 in London. If you drive at 50mph you’ll get high fifties. It will also do comfortable cruising at 70 80 mph. 0,60 mph is 11 secs which is decent. If you don’t care about that sort of thing then go for the 1.0 litre.

The VW gives you the smallest car at the highest price with an overengineered engine, which will cost you a fortune if the turbo breaks down. The Suzuki offers the most space at the lowest cost but it looks a little bit lame and the interior looks really cheap. The Hyundai offers a good design, good space and an engine without a turbocharger. So it is not the cheapest but it is cheap, has no expensive parts that tend to break and it has 5 years of warranty without any limitation. For me, that's the winner. What Mat Watson forgets is that these cars are not meant to be a sports car. Usually, they are just used in cities, not on motorways. I got an i10 last year for my way to work. It replaced my BMW 318i touring, which I still have but I didn't want it to go 200km every day. The only thing I missing is the space if I have to transport big stuff. But here I am talking about really big stuff. The Hyundai can also take 2m boards as long as the width is not too big or some Ikea stuff. I am getting close to 50000 km now and I'm still happy with my car.

That VW interior looks like a hospital waiting room. The Hyundai looks good, looks a solid car and also has a good warranty. The Celerio is a cheap car and Matt clearly doesnt like it but you have to remember, not everybody needs or wants one of these bloody infotainment screens that seem to be getting stuck in every car these days, and dont forget, the more tech, the higher the price. I listen to the radio, I dont need sat nav or bluetooth or apple connectivity etc etc, and electric mirrors are a waste of money. Once you set them so you can see properly, you never use the controls again, so whats the point ? People are so gullible for the latest trends, fashions and gadgets, and car makers know they can sell more cars if they put as much of this crap in them as possible. I got a new Abarth 500 a few years ago and the salesman was going to show me how to connect my phone up but I said im not interested, I didnt buy it for that. They seem to think we all want toys to play with. I buy a car for the driving experience. I often see drivers on the motorway when stuck in traffic, fiddling with the screens, their phones (which I happily point out to them), slurping drinks you name it everything but concentrating and thats half the problem these days.

What if you could not get the 1.0 litre turbo VW up. Budget for example. Would the i10 have won in this case?

We have a “Grand i10” here in Sri Lanka and I’ve been in one. It’s pretty impressive for the money you pay for it. Hyundai has certainly come a long way. Certainly better than Toyota and other Japanese small cars like the Yaris.

replying after 3 years🙂 this i10 better than yaris seriously bro grand i10 is just a entry level hatchback(here in india) Yaris has sedan and hatch and both are better than this

The car is okay problem is for me with it this car as new driver is low speed parking, the tire has traction but I get no feedback to adjust with parking when the car is stopped . My mum says I need practice buts hell to park, she should have Gone Japanese like a Honda Fit/Jazz , Suzuki Swift . How ever feedback at high speeds are excellent handling with my little bit of Motorsport skill even though I've never done motorsport racing. I go based of feel not speed.

I have the previous gen Picanto with a 1.0 liter engine, which is piss-poor. Overtaking is a nightmare. And don't even think of maintaining 120 Km/h on an incline. Rather buy an older car that has better performance! These cars are good if you're *never* going on a highway.

i think thats why there called city cars because they have no power and are only ment for quick trips around town, my fucking hamster running on a wheel produces more power than one of those!!

Yeah but unless you live in one of the densest cities in the world you'll have to get on a highway to get to certain areas in a reasonable amount of time.

The Volkswagen Up looks good, but the problem is that its made by Volkswagen and their service and reliability is terrible so the i10 wins this test really because Hyundai is fine.

I just traded in my 2010 Golf for an i10. The rear brakes on the Golf got jammed on three times in one year and went on fire. Luckily following motorists alerted me to the problem all times but that was it for me and a newer Golf was just too damn expensive for me only doing 50 miles a week so an i10 at half the price with a good spec was a no-brainer.

yeah not reliable anymore... VW had its glory peak about reliability a long time ago, but people still think it's still the case... Bought one, cost me a lot with many problems to solve one after another, then finally and definitively broken down after only 6 years. Never, ever buy one again, and discourage anybody else to do so.

The Celerio is the best of them. Most economical petrol available right now. But if you want to get a decent car that size, you still have to go with the Daihatsu Cuore. Second best economy of them all, fastest 1 litre with no turbo, loads of space for 4 people (adjustable rear seat row, choose between lot of space in the back or for passengers) and you can sleep in that one because you get a level surface out of the front seats folding down towards the back seats. 66mpg, 2600 rpm at 60 mph.

I know I'm commenting on a really old video but Matt, out of curiosity, what are the entry level cars that Brits generally tend to purchase? In many parts of Asia, these cars aren't really entry level. They're placed a notch above what we would call cheap cars. Again, most of our entry level vehicles have failed the NCAP tests which makes me believe they wouldn't even make it to the British or European markets. Edit: I just purchased the Hyundai Grand i10 and it isn't cheap but it certainly isn't 9000-10,000 GBP. Damn, cars are expensive there.

Oh dear..touch screen...avoid whenever possible as it will be legislated on like mobile phones were..it's being scrutinised as we speak and accident data analysed.stick to the simplest design every time, before it becomes illegal to operate a touchscreen while driving!!
