The W8 is one of the 10 most complicated engines made for cars. I have 2 of them, both are being removed and repaired (my bads). The engine is a work of art. Like a Rolex watch, a masterpiece of engineering that is a beauty to behold. Great machine.
@@goyslop4289 True - and the turbo 4 was a powerhouse too! However, I think that a retune in the ECU and a few other tweaks could get more. That being said, thought, these engines can go 1/2m miles and are a beauty to behold. They deliberately underperformed so they could last forever. Makes sense.
@@goyslop4289 yes it sucks in terms of power but the whole point of the w8 is small form factor. You wouldnt be able to fit a traditional 8 cylinder into a passat. Thats what makes this engine special. Also the bugatti veyron engine from 2005-2011 was a w16 so it was basically two of these combined at the crank.
@_icscata_ NOT so. There are the same number of moving parts in a DOHC V8. What makes this unique is the compact layout design. about 30% less size of a normal v8. But it has a myriad complex cooling system, water cooled alternator, oil and auto tranny coolers above normal. it rubs butter smooth. i am just finished a core motor and I'm impressed with the German engineering. it is a beat for servicing, but tge whole idea is to NOT require service. Made to last 400k. work of art.
No prob. For the record it also had bad O2 sensor, and all weekend the dyno was notorious for reading much lower than people were expecting. But the dyno guys were also dynoing people in the wrong gear and I asked them to do mine in 3rd even though they wanted to do 4th.
@@Ardonn yes.. The W8 is a 4L Engine with 2*4 Zylinder VR Banks. The W16 is a 8L Engine with 2*8 Zylinder VR Bank. The W8 is just half the Engine of a W16!
@@aliver8794 Not quite. The Veyron is a 90 degree vs 72 degree, probably different cams, lower compression because of 4 turbo chargers and intercoolers, connecting rods, beffier crank and 1,100 / 1,500 ho and about $1/4 million more.

And your point is? The W8 wasn't built as a high performance engine. Passats weren't heavy so they didn't need to tune the balls out of it from the factory. It was built to power a long distance comfortable cruiser on the Autobahn. Still makes more power than some shitbox American 8 cyl engines

Thirdly and most hilarious 🤣...your explaining to me it was made to be a luxury autobahn cruiser and I agree with you...... so why as you put it a luxury car with zero sporting potential slamed on its arse with a set of 20 inch wide J wheels on the dyno getting thrashed in 4 and 5th gear..... which i may add is stupid considering w8 of that era was famous for engine issues. @@ErikMontenegro92 Nah sounds completely stock. Just muffler deletes thats it. No rocket ship, it does have around 280hp but its very heavy, not that quick. The engine in stock form is NA.
The car is limited to 250 kph. I know of a chap on the internet who got 283 out of it with computer mods. It is a bit detuned so it can have a longer life and not breakdown. Smart move. It is a very smooth running engine and fun to drive.
@@TheBlaert bro, I own 3 cars, mk1 tt 3.2 vr6 with a build engine, check my page. Lotus elise s2 (just sold that) and my daily s204 c63 amg. What should I be jealous about? Makes you look stupid don't it. Those w8's aswell as my TT are both great sounding cars but are slow as fuck, hence the fact I have a build engine in my TT. I could of turbo'ed it but wanted to keep it N/A, I love N/A cars. So yes I inow how that car goes. Takes almost 7 seconds or maybe even more 0-100, a common 2l diesel can take this car so yeah it's slow and the sound doesnt match the go. Now pls stfu and go to bed.
