Voltaren for arthritis pain is a cream/gel infused with diclofenac and well known non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for pain relief. Here in our physical therapy practice, we often get asked by our patients about its use for their joint arthritis.
Here are some of the most common questions people ask us :
Can I use Voltaren for arthritis in my joint?
Is Voltaren a natural product?
Can Voltaren help fix arthritis?
What are the side effects of Voltaren?
Keep in mind that Voltaren is not a long term pain solution. It is intended to only give pain relief for the short term.
🔬 Here is a great research study we found about lidocaine:

Long time knee arthritis sufferer who has used cortisone injections every 3 months for over 10 years. A CRNA told me about Voltaren 2 years ago, and it has been a game-changer for me. It literally allowed me to increase my ROM and controls my swelling better than anything I've tried.

I agree Voltaren is a game-changer. the Injections did not work for me. I also used the Lidocaine patches, easy to use-less messy and amazing. Lastly, I never thought Ibuprofen would help- but it really did (for me). Now with 2 recent hip replacements I am pain free. PS: i don't even want to think of my knees LOL!

63 with bad knees here. My doctor (at my request) prescribed sodium diclophinac tablets for my severe knee pain. A 100 mg tablet would last me 2 days. Sometimes even 3 days. Even after I showed him the small amount I was using, he stopped prescribing them. I tried Volteron and the the wally world equate version. It usually took 3 applications in one day before I felt relief, but it didn't last long. Not even over night. Now I do some herbal and natural oral stuff, but discovered your channel and have been doing some of your exercises. They seem to help, but nothing has worked better than those 100 mg tablets.

I was prescribed Voltaren, and it does eventually work, but must be applied 4 x day for two weeks before it reaches full effectiveness and that was not convenient or useful for my needs, plus the 21-day limit doesn’t help! I do use it 2 weeks in advance of an event like travel or concert or a wedding, and then discontinue it for several months. More natural and quick-acting topicals work better for me as an occasional user, thank you for your channel!

I found using turmeric every day my pain is so much less. I make the paste with turmeric, pepper and coconut, cook in a sauce pan, mixing the whole time. I put it in small jars, place in my refrig, and take half a teaspoon in the morning and evening to help me sleep. I also found CBD oil has helped. This drug is no to be used long term so get off for a few weeks before starting again. I am in my 60's and am playing tennis and pickleball. Now

Also available in pill form (highly effective). The Osteo Gel version (In Australia) at 23.2 mg/g is the strongest available over the counter. The stuff just works. It is not as long lasting as a topical application as the pills are, and everyone's situation is different but it has kept me working and playing guitar for the last couple of years. The applied quantities shown in this video are ridiculously over the top and must appear on the US packaging. A 6mm (1/4 inch) application does my thumb, palm heel and inner wrist easily. Generally considered to be one of the safest NSAIDs. The generic Diclofenac products are cheaper, Voltaren is just a brand.

I took oral Diclofenac for years until I developed an allergy in the form of a Fixed Drug Eruption. I learned that all NSAIDs are common culprits in this. I also participated in a study of the topical form before I developed the allergy. After abandoning the pills for a few years (which completely stopped the reaction) Diclofenac/Voltaren became available OTC and I bravely tried it in the topical form. I use it sparingly but it has not caused me any problems. I have also used topical Arnica cream. It is just as effective for me. I find that it helps when my arthritic fingers when they flare up.

I tried Voltaren and was not impressed. At least it doesn’t have a horrible fragrance. But it doesn’t do anything. I have bone-on-bone arthritis in both knees. Voltaren just can’t penetrate deep enough into the joint to do anything. I didn’t really expect much, but when my doctor suggested, I figured it was worth a try. Good news is, my co-pay was low so at least I didn’t waste much money on it. I have sensitive skin, but Voltaren did not cause skin irritation for me.

I would just like to add that one should always keep in mind that we are all individuals and even if there is only a very small chance of a allergic reaction, you might happen to be that person. I certainly am. I am allergic to all NSAIDS & when I applied a small amount of Voltaren I immediately started toi feel unwell. I can't even take 1 Advil safely. Some gp's will try to push this medication even if you tell them you've had allergic reactions to drugs such as Naproxen or Advil. This cream goes into the blood stream all the same. I just hate the thought of patients feeling pressured by their doctor to use this because the majority of people don't have a bad reaction. Beware!

Good reminders: I was taking oral dicofenac after a car accident about 8 years ago~had whiplash~decided to go to Physical Therapy and did that for quite some time, an hour of various exercises every day! Cut back was taking the oral med still, had plantar fasciitis treated by a great podiatrist, he urged me to only "pulse dose" it for a few days at a time. Then I switched primary care doctors thank goodness. Well, I developed stomach problems (polyps) and had my 1st endoscopy 2023, then another 2024, polyps etc. removed and have completely STOPPED oral NSAIDS. Have had a neck injury from a smaller accident 2 months ago, back to PT, not taking oral NSAIDS, I can use the topical for thumb arthritis and knees. However, I avoid these things. I am a pianist and my hand doctor told me that practicing helps keep the arthritis in the thumbs at bay! I have found that to be true. Yeah long story, but doctors who just keep writing Rxs w/o periodic evaluation and updates can cause HARM. Glad we switched primary care provider in 2019 before the pandemic. Sorry for the long comment but I have watched your videos for advice for walking for the knees and feet troubles, and your suggestions are helpful! Thanks for your videos!

OTC Voltaren in the US is only 1%, whereas in Europe, it is 2%. You can buy it OTC, even at the airport, before you fly back to the states.

Severe arthritus in Right Knee, began using Voltaren several months before my TKR surgery. It was one of the few medications that both my Doctor, the Surgeon and Physical Therapist all told me NOT to discontinue in prepraation for the surgery and during rehab. I'm into 14 weeks after the surgery, Voltaren and Ice are my main go to meds to control pain and swelling. I only need it once a day, generally at the end of day, prior to going to bed, along with my final tread mill & recumbent bicycle training, and ice pack use.

I use a rubber glove as well to apply it. The directions say to apply the gel with that spreader/measuring card, which implies it’s not meant to be applied with a bare hand. A gloved hand is much more effective at throughly applying the gel than that card.

I love Voltaren. I rub it into my hands before I do yard work. It doesn't help my lower back pain but PT did stop that. For arthritis it stops my pain in hands, thumbs and wrists, shoulders, and knees quickly and long lasting relief. I am petite and don't use as much as it says to use. It is the best cream I have ever tried.

The heart attack and stroke warnings are based on adverse events when diclofenac is taken orally (and I would not use it by that route). FDA requires the warning. But with topical application there is no evidence of that effect at the concentrations used in these gels. There is quite a bit of literature on that.

You are talking about Topical Votaren. I would like to point out the dangers of taking Voltaren by mouth for to long. I took Voltaren by mouth for many years on a regular basis. I ended up with severe bleeding in my stomach Bur worse still it damaged my kidneys quite badly. They are okay now. They are okay now through the help of a fantastic kidney doctor. I hope you don't mind me butting in on your video. I just wanted people to know harmful it can be if not used in moderation.

Please lift the tub up higher as what you are doing is hidden behind the subtitles. Also, why keep going to the Dr. for every little question. Why not just ask the pharmacist at the shop (it is free to ask the pharmacist) who dispenses all medication and they specialise in the combination of taking the prescribed medication and the over the counter medication and their interaction with each other.

I live in Ireland and it's called voltarol here. I have been using it for a short while because age is catching up with my joints😔 it gives very effective relief for many hours. I use it once or twice a day, and only if I really need it. My doctor recently prescribed difene tablets. But I won't be using them. They can cause stomach issues and heart attack and stroke. I am surprised the tablets were prescribed for me, as I am already on meds for cholesterol, blood pressure, gout and stomach ulcer! I think I will be sticking with the voltarol gel while seeking out a more natural method to help my aching joints.

I am a US Marine Corp, Desert Storm/Shield Veteran. I have Arthritis in every joint in my body, along with Degenerative disk disease, bone spurs, pinched nerves, Radiculopathy and Plantar Fasciitis. I used to use diclofenac for about two years, but it really did not relieve any pain for me. I have also used Lidocaine patches (5%) and those take some of the sharpness away from the pain, but those patches don't stick long and I have to wear 5 or 6 of them just to get any relief. The only thing that has ever helped get rid of my Arthritis pain completely, is smoking weed! If I take a few puffs off of a one hitter, I will have Zero pain for the next three or so days. I live in Atlanta, Georgia USA, and weed is still illegal here, so it is hard to come by unless you know someone. We need to make recreational weed legal Nationwide!

Have your doctor write a prescription for Lidocaine cream vs the patches. It's fairly new to the US market but works much better than the crappy patches.

I get diclophenac (generic name for Voltaren) via health insurance at a much cheaper cost... With use 4+ times daily helps with MILD to somewhat MODERATE arthritis pain in my hand for about 3-4 hours after each application, but doesn't stop the sharp Trigger Finger pains at all.... But, worth it for the arthritis, as I don't need to take so much Ibuprofen.

I tried this cream because I have pain in my left thumb pad. After my first dose it felt better until I started spiraling into a dark depression. I couldn't understand what was happening until I read the side effects which includes depression. I immediately washed it off and discontinued use then I returned to normal. A coworker told me he experienced the same thing and had to discontinue using it. This is just a warning for anyone else who may experience the same side effects.
