Volvo EX30 Software Glitches So Bad Some Owners Are Returning Them! 

Really not interested in buying any vehicle that they expect the user to test for them. If it doesn’t work when sold DONT SELL IT!

Ours has been great. The 1.4 update fixed all of the minor bugs we previously experienced. Couldn’t be happier with our Twin Motor Ultra EX30

I had my EX30 for a few weeks now. There's some small bugs and annoyances but nothing even close to bad enough to think about returning it. I do admit they should have taken another 6-9 months or so to fix all of this and provide all the features they promised ( digital phone key, android auto, carplay, etc ).

i watched a ton of videos on my model 3 before i placed an order, and even after i took delivery i had more questions, i had to be quite patient learning things that were different from previous ICE vehicles i drove, if i was one with not a lot of patience for these things, it may be better to stick with what you are already familiar with.

Was thinking of gettin an EX30 but not with issues. I hope Volvo fixes the software problem better than VW has dealt with their ID models. I do own a '23 ID4 Pro AWD and it's been ok with the software but the interface isn't great. No bugs or anything just dealing with the annoying steps and hidden features in the software. They haven't had an update in the two years I've owned my car.

Thanks, Francie. After Mr. Biden announced the tariffs, I decided to forsake my $500 EX 30 deposit & lease a Polestar 2 (thanks to OOS for alerting me to the leasing deals). That car has been pretty solid software-wise so I'm surprised about the EX 30 issues. (One of my friends ended his early model VW ID4 lease early due to software troubles.) I'm currently (no pun intended) dealing with home charger installation, which is more complicated that I imagined! Greetings from So California 😊

Volvo solved the major and most of the minor bugs with version 1.3.1 and newest 1.4. So what is the problem here? Most of the other EVs had software issues at the beginning. I have no problems with my EX30 and I love it.

The issue is where established automakers know how to build cars but not software. Where some new makers come from software or electronic manufacturing into automotive and make the same mistakes as major OEMs. I think that some regulation should be in place to ensure cars are delivered with certified software to meet the minimum usability standards. Optionals, gimmicks and additional features could be delivered OTA preferred or at least an easy and fast in the shop update. I heard the term the other day that EVs are COWs. (Computer On Wheels) Too funny. 😅

I think the software issues are just more noticeable. Automakers have released cars previously with multiple hardware issues that have lead to recalls. I think it is a sign of how much more reliable and less complex the hardware is on EVs, that now software is now the most notable issue. For most automakers, this can be fixed over the air (sorry, not the VinFast).

I feel like there should be a requirement that a car be able to be safely driven even if the main infotainment screen dies or is damaged. A single point of failure is a concern with some of the new car designs.

It's a very big issue with the normal person. I am very tech oriented being an electrical engineer. So dealing with new technology and software issues is not an issue with me. But on the other side my wife is so anti tech. It also adds to the issue being in the retirement age group. So for her she has an 2021 Leaf which has no remote control and all is analog controls. I currently drive an ID.4. not many software update but overall I have not had any issues. So the EX30 is a car that would appeal to the older generation. I feel like they dropped the ball with just everything one one screen. Major mistake.

I like the interior and exterior of the vehicle but the that one screen and the backseat space make me say I'll look forward to Kia's Ev3 and hopefully Hyundai Inster to come to the US. Maybe the new Bolt be worth the wait.

I don't think this issue is unique to EVs. All major redesigned car models have historically come with a higher rate of new problems. New EV models being released from new automotive companies further increase the rate of problems. Personally, I steer clear of any new models and especially new automotive companies. Tesla is a great example. Their models were riddled with issues in the early years. However, they have gradually increased their quality controls and now have excellent initial customer satisfaction scores. However, they still struggled significantly with the Cybertruck QA issues. Another example of a major new model that needs time to iterate through problems. Early adopters will always suffer through these teething issues. Some of these issues can be quite severe. Customers should vote with their dollars both before purchasing and after (in the form of returns) to incentivize manufacturers to improve quality control.

Car Companies taking a page out of Triple A Gaming Companies. Push out the software and then fix with Patches and updates. lol

All new EV manufacturers face this dilemma on releasing a vehicle before it is 100% functional. Nearly every manufacturer has done it. About 17 months ago, I had major software and a few hardware problems with Lucid GT after spending $155K. For that amount of money, wouldn’t you expect a near perfect EV? We returned it for refund. Many of the problems we discovered probably were fixed, BUT you don’t know if the manufacturer ever will fix them. They won’t put it in writing. For example, look how poorly VW handled bugs in the first iD4s. Horrible.

This is kind of why I don't like being an early adopter of anything. I am still watching closely on the car and see what happens in the next 2 or 3 years. Maybe I'll get it then.

We were _really_ tempted by an EX30 or XC40 electric but ultimately got a Tesla precisely because of the software. 💭 Sadly, Tesla is still miles ahead of Legacy Auto on software and charging network and the gap is only widening. 🙃

Had my EX30 since 8th June 2024. The IITC has not worked since day one. Been messed around By Volvo UK as far as I am aware there is no fix at the moment for this issue. It worked for one day. Unfortunately I told Volvo it worked. The day after it’s gone back to not working at all. The EX30 app doesn’t integrate with the car at all and therefore doesn’t hold data or information. I am still in discussions with Volvo to replace the car which is ongoing and extremely frustrating and disappointing. I wish I could get a straight answer. Been back Four times in a month to the main dealer they say it is not their responsibility as Santander/ Volvo finance own the vehicle. I just want someone to help

It is all about past history. If the manufacturer has a history of consistent OTA software updates, then waiting for a feature is OK. The problem is that Chinese manufacturers are not known for long-term support.

To think that Kyle called my IONIQ 5’s software crap. It has yet to blank/black screen me and if the infotainment screen did the essentials would still be on the instrument screen and if not there the bare minimums would be on the heads up. Creating a GUI interface doesn’t have to be hard but it had better be built to be stable. There hasn’t been core vehicle ‘over the air updates’ so an annoying trip to the dealership is all this caused but Hyundai got 98% of this right. We haven’t been beta testers with a 2023 for Hyundai. Yes the route planning still is lacking but I’ve never depended on vehicle NAV for that. I typically arrive at single digit SOC to available chargers. So yes I want improvements with this delivered on the EV without a phone but not at the sacrifice of stability. I’m looking forward to selectable NAV SOC arrival levels, manual preconditioning and that being available to 5% SOC, elevation calculation and selectable charger options as alternates. Mind you no one will ever be stranded by their IONIQ but I’m in to exploiting the capabilities of 22 minute charging for 82% SOC instead of sipping like a humming bird often. Is it New Porsche Taycan level no, but Randy Pobst will tell you the pack management development has only gotten better and personally am looking forward to even better charging which is the technology that will give me what I want because I don’t have a Lucid pocket book either. #pikespeak 11:03

All of us with an Aptera reservation are very concerned about numerous software bugs at launch. Buyers are anxious to take delivery and the manufacturer wants to get revenue to fuel operations. Buying the first production run is a bitter-sweet experience. Burn rate is the number one enemy to start-ups, especially car companies.

Francis, I don’t think this is only an EV issue. GM, for example, is installing exact copies of their screens in gas powered Traverses. Dave B sells Chevys has a post showing off the 4 levels of Traverses. From the power seats to the screens, it looks to be the same stuff that they are installing in the Blazers and Equinoxes. While some of underlying software has to be different, a screen could go out on either type of car. Reviewing EVs in a vacuum or assuming that they are always “different” I don’t think is always true. Also, when you reset the VinFast by resetting the 12-volt battery, it bought back memories of doing the same thing on our 2014 RAV4 EV early on.. It’s still running fine, just passing the 10-year mark a month ago.

Caveat emptor. It’s never been a good idea to buy one of the first cars off of a production line. Bummer about the EX30, it seems like a really cool car. At least Volvo is an established company that should be able to make things right for their customers. At least you didn’t buy a Fisker

I bought a Smart #1 Brabus in October in the UK 🇬🇧 This car is from the same manufacturer (Geely) as the Volvo EX30 and built on the same platform. This is where the similarities end. The software is totally different, I have a driver & heads up display. Because I bought the car a week after launch it didn’t come with all features eg no Android Auto, Apple CarPlay or a heated steering wheel. All these came 2 months later via OTA updates. This is a big difference to having bugs, it doesn’t have any and if you bought it today you would not have to wait for an update. I’m so happy with the car and the customer service it’s a forever car I would never sell it. This could really damage the company's image, as the main reason people chose Volvo over German or British cars in the past was the higher safety expectations. I wouldn't blame Volvo directly, because Lotus doesn't have the software in 100% condition either. So it may be something deeper within the Geely platform. The question is whether this will also affect the upcoming Polestar cars ? Also, the timing is not in their favour as the pricing and specifications of the EV3 for Europe will be released in a few weeks. In general, a car (or any other product) should have all the features and equipment that the customer pays for at the time of delivery. Customers should not be unpaid test drivers.

What makes Tesla software best in class is that it provides new features and bug fixes over the air and delivers what is promised (eventually). I think its the Tesla Effect. Everyone thinks Tesla's don't have problems(they do), so my EV that I just bought should be exactly like Tesla, and when it is not, people complain and return it(or try to) instead of figuring it out and getting it fixed.

Manufacturers have gotten to comfortable with over the air updates. The cybertruck that was the definition of to reliant on over the air updates. We used to get finished products, now the customer is the inspection team and whatever they don't find the manufacturer can get away with

You asked when a car is ready, finished, and truly ready for delivery. Kyle questioned the same with the Cybertruck's lack of promised features. Software and features that are marketed as present need to be complete. Volvo's reputation is taking a hit with the EX30 for those who are paying attention. I'll add that a viable charging network is also a manufacturer's responsibility. They don't all need to make their own networks, but they do need to be putting pressure on the 3rd party charging networks to make sure the customers they sell cars to are getting a good experience.

Noone cares if a software has issues because pretty soon they fix them. those who complain about software issues and return cars are just totally ignorant. This is not a faulty machine. It's just a bug which will soon be fixed

The reason Tesla is orders of magnitude more reliable is because they change the way the vehicle body controllers work. Traditional manufactures are using off the shelf controllers and trying to integrate them with electronics. Tesla changed all the controllers and then they changed them again in the cyber truck to make 48 V is ultimately the goal everybody needs to get to so I have enormous issues with Elon, he put his money where his mouth is and he makes the cars correctly

I know your focus is EVs, but maybe Kyle could look into how the software is functioning on new ICE vehicles as a comparison. Those vehicles also have a lot of software driven features. Maybe this issue of new cars being released with software glitches is not confined to EVs.

So many automakers struggling with infotainment software, especially legacy automakers. I almost feel like legacy automakers should just transition to Android Automotive and let a dedicated software company handle it. But I don’t like the idea of Google gaining a dominant position in yet another software market. I wonder if Tesla or Rivian would consider licensing their infotainment software platforms to other manufacturers.

Volvo is not alone: - Tesla Model 3 Performance breaks and battery are overheating after minutes of track/high speed driving. Little 5 minute wonder, and it is over. - Cybertrucks have apparently motor/powertrain recall now.

not sure how Volvo ever thought this would be acceptable...? surely they know a primary reason consumers seek to buy an electric Volvo is PRECISELY because they DON'T want to risk spending "big ticket item money" and ending up with a crappy Tesla. mind you i say this despite the fact the build quality of the Model 3 SR i first bought new (but sold after only 3 months) was actually quite good, however i recognize that there are many owners who DID NOT get lucky like i did.

This is a consequence of Tesla's attitude of using the customer as beta testers/ Other car companies look to emulate.
