Thanks for this, helped confirm my own suspicions. Btw for those wondering it’s also called a Schottky diode. Also the diodes are MS (metal semiconductor) which uses anodes to conduct in one direction meaning obviously it needs to be installed with the silver band on the diode being the direction + power should be flowing. In other words the metal band should be on the wire that will be going to the relay next.
Thanks Steve, i always look forward to hearing from you. That being said, i want to buy a bunch of parts and do a bunch of how to videos on suzuki’s this fall. Any How To’s you would like? So far i am going to do my front brake pad change and possibly wheel cylinder trick on the 97 i bought. I would like to do a ton of procedures. Any ideas are appreciated as i know you are a King Quad guy. Josh
My boat was not stopping by removing the key, after I stopped it it cranks but no power is going to the fuel pump , by changing this diode will help me?
My motor won't turn off but my starter isn't turning. Basically the purple wire that goes to the alternator, then coil and then to ignition still has 12v on it when switch is off, batteries etc. Guess i'll put one in it?
This is interesting. I'm wondering if diodes where installed on older carbureted VP models with mechanical fuel pump, or if it's EFI only? I have an older VP 5,7l V8 I'm installing an electric fuel pump in and this might be important to consider to make it run right.
If you install it aftermarket like that you could wire it up with no diodes needed. This was a carb 4.3. Not sure when the diode system started but it is garbage
Thanks a lot, I could guess I had a diode problem but could not begin to find it and didn't want to open the whole wiring harness. The original coud be anywhere, right?
I am hoping this might be my issue but I’m not 100% my engine turns over but won’t start. It is not getting power to the fuel pump from the relay. If I bypass it with 12v it starts up no problem the boat is a 99 penta 5.0 gi The motor is fuel injected. Is this the problem?
New starter solenoid same issue , no power on key wire from relay to starter , can I run a secondary wire from relay to S terminal ( key wire ) on starter ?
So....i am looking for info on a 95 Volvo penta cobra efI 5 liter. This is what led me to this video. I have twins that wont start. I'm seeing no voltage on yellow wire that goes to starter. I have no starter clicks, alarm...nothing other than fuel pump sounds. Ignition switch is fine. Controls in neutral. Circuit breakers good. No crank on either of 3 battery switch positions. Gauges on with key. Assuming same issue with both motors because they have same characteristics.
I've a different issue as others have that's not been properly addressed, solenoid clicking, can short the solenoid with success, nothing from the key switch, I've ruled out key switch, neutral safety switch, still no power at starter ( yellow / red wire ) tracked power to Hella relay 4rd 007 794 32, has power but none at the starter , ( yellow / red wire )
Hello , excuse me , i have problem with the electrical system with the sale engine , it’S V6 volvo penta. Do you have the electrical diagram please, m’y problème it’s when i turn the key to start the engine nothing happen . Thank you for your help
Hey, sorry no diagram as this was a long time ago. Do you hear a click or anything? Try and verify that power is making it to your starter solenoid. I have replaced a few starters on volvo’s.
Is it possible to bypass all of this, just have the oem pump connected to a 'key on' circuit? A prior owner of the Volvo Penta I just bought started snipping wires at the relay - it's a mess. Maybe the diode was bad, or the feed from the alternator - who knows, but I'd like to just bypass it all. Possible? I wonder why Volvo wired it this way
Very possible, i have rigged a hacked merc setup( similar) to 12v key on to fuel pump and off when key off with no issues. I don’t know why volvo did it this way to be honest. In the end the only thing it saves is your fuel pump running if your key is left on and engine not running. Not a big deal at all.
