Here is one that many people pay big bucks for. The fuel pumps in these will leak, or fail altogether, and it can cost an average of $500 to $750 yo replacement at a shop.
I bought this pump on ebay for less than $80, and splurged for the $18 fuel pump socket to go with it.
When your done, you can always resell the socket!

Great video! I've got a fuel gauge reading empty all the time. Research says entire fuel pump needed to fix the issue. Anyway to test
@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs
Yes. Unplug the connector and ground the right pin. The fuel gauge should go to full. if it does, the problem is the pump, if it doesn't check the wiring, or it could be in the dash. Both of those issues are rare on the 01 models.

Volvo for some reason also made a steel gas tank in a few cars of this era. If yours is steel, it takes a different pump.

Great video. I had this done under warranty. Reeked of gasoline for days. After that, the engine completely cuts out at about 1/4, sometimes 1/2 tank then starts right back up. They wanted 16 hours to drop the tank when I called... When I opened up the level gauge side, it's still covered in 20 years of dust. Did they not replace the FP whatsoever? Or is the siphon somehow still dangling in the fuel tank?
@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs
It is certainly a problem with their install. It should be covered under warranty.

Thanks for the video, very helpful! I just replaced my son's 1999 S70 pump recently and it was WAY easier in comparison to this one. My 2001 V70 XC is exhibiting the same symptom as his was (longer and longer cranking duration before she fired up) so proactively got a replacement pump. My question is on the pump side float, was it difficult to get the float out of the opening, and then back into the opening with the new pump? The pump float ball is clearly sticking out on the arm and the pump opening in the tank looks super tight. Were you just able to angle the float in and then guide the rest of the pump into the tank opening? The video did not seem to show how you managed to get the pump side float in with the rest of the pump so just wondering. For the sending unit it seems the float on that side is easier to guide back in after you get the wires reconnected compared to the pump side? Thanks again!
@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs
It's not hard at all, you just angle the pump to get the float in the hole, then push down the rest of the unit.
@timholland191
@timholland191 Год назад
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Awesome, that's what I was hoping to hear so thanks for the confirm. When I saw the removal I was just wondering if the ball float was what might have snagged and made the removal a bit of a challenge. I got the replacement pump and gaskets yesterday including a ring removal tool (the job just looks so much easier with the tool). Tank is about 1/8 full so now to just have wait for a mild New England days to take it on. Thanks again.
@timholland191
@timholland191 Год назад
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Well, it was 45F yesterday so decided to tackle the fuel pump job. Went off without a hitch....well almost! The video really helped, everything was exactly as you outlined and I was able to angle the pump to easily get the ball float into the opening. That cable tip to snake the wire and hose harness through was huge, I cannot even imagine how I'd get that damned thing thru w/o that cable tied off. Also, the tool was SO worth the $. My only frustration with the actual job was keeping the pump and sending unit aligned and the arrow pointing between the hash mark lines on the tank, even with the offset you suggested I kept overshooting the mark and needing to back off and try again. I ended up bracing the units with a large screwdriver to keep them from moving, all good! One huge bummer that was self inflicted by me, I decided to prime and drive the car before I buttoned everything up, just to make sure no leaks, and top the tank off to be sure seals was good. Confirmed no leaks, and everything buttoned up perfectly when I got back into the drive. Problem is that when I started the car w/o the seat installed and airbag connector plugged in I immediately set an "SRS_Airbag Service Urgent" error on the Message Window on the left. I have to assume this is because I started and drove it without the seat installed and airbag wire connector plugged back in? I cannot get rid of this error message and have the orange exclamation point staring me in the face every time I drive it now. Any ideas on how to clear that error message (battery disconnect did not do it)? Thanks again!
@timholland191
@timholland191 Год назад
Just to close this off, I was able to clear this SRS error code with the help of my local repair shop using his tool, a no charge easy fix....lesson learned for me as I caused this error by driving w/o the rear seat air bag connector installed (so I could see both the fuel pump and sending unit assys to make sure they were not leaking). Thanks again - this video was a huge help for me to get this job done - properly!

Great video! I just replaced the fuel sending unit in my 2007 s60. I just bought this car, and the second gas fill up was after the repair. I immediately smelled gas from outside the vehicle, near the rear of the vehicle. I thought at first that I didn’t do the repair correctly, but I went back over everything, ensuring a good seal. So I think I had a leak somewhere before I did the repair. Are there any known places to check? I have a smell of gas when the tank is full with no drips anywhere. Any advice? sounds like the fuel is leaking back into the tank. Did you just replace the pump, or the entire assembly? The anti drainback valve is in the assembly so it may be defective.
@yoursoulmattersmost

the fuel did return to the tank, but through faulty/dead fuel injector. It was causing difficulties with building up the fuel pressure on the common rail and delayed start of the engine. @@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs HI, thanks for your reply. Yes, evidently my 2006 V70 does have a metal tank. I was not even aware there was another option and it was not mentioned in the video. I only found out when I started to do the repair as you outlined in your video and found nothing but the top of the tank beneath the cover on the drivers side rear floor, where the sending unit would be. I was able to find another video that shows both options and details the procedure for both. As you know, the procedure for the metal tank is vastly different. No, Volvo just LOVES to be different. The tank is a saddle style tank so fuel fills both sides, but past the 1/2 way point it doesn't flow side to side so there is the second line run over there to help regulate the level.

Thank you for the thorough explanation and showing the whole process on video. Just subscribed! Is this on a plastic fuel tank? Also I saw another comment about the fuel gauge showing empty. That's the issue with mine too. I'm thinking if I need to buy a new sending unit, might as well buy both new and a new pump, so I can put my interior back together and not worry about it for years. Is there a way to just take the potentiometer out for the sending unit without removing the whole fuel pump assembly and fishing wire from side to side? I was considering repairing the pot and seeing if that fixes it, otherwise just buy new everything and put it to bed.

You have a steel tank model. They are different. The steel tank is not compatible with the composite tank pump because all the pump components are on the passenger side. The fuel filter for both is located underneath the car on the passenger side about where the rear door is. It has a Schrader valve to release the pressure and the same type of connectors for the fuel as the fuel pump. It holds a lot of fuel so have something there to catch it. I hope this helps.

@@nwsights6301 I promise it's there. It's tucked in there but it's there. Look in about 8 inches in from the side of the car, in front of the rear wheel well about where the bottom rear seat pad ends under the car. I passed it myself several times when I looked for it. @@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Thx for the support. Just seeing all that gasoline in my back seat! One thing you could've mentioned. If someone wants to spend the money, there are 12v inline gasoline-rated pumps you could use to empty out the tank before doing the work. I luckily just bought one to drain the fuel out of a car that had been sitting for years. So maybe between that and your encouragement I'll do it. Hopefully it'll be the filter or sensor which I'm doing first. Anyway, thanks for the video and and the encouragement.

Flat rate techs have to hurry to make a paycheck but if I was doing it myself, take your time and be a bit more gentle with all that or you’re going to create more problems. Definitely clean up around the pump and level sensor before you open them up and drop a bunch of debris into the tank and cause more issues…
