Volvo V50 - Weird problem when starting the engine

For an unknown reason, When turning the ignition key, to engine do not start.
Even when keeping the key at the start position, the engine still do not start.
After several try, and keeping the key at the stats position, the engine suddenly starts?!
If you know what's going on, please tell me!

Hi I had that problem and called the dealership. The guy there told me to unlock my door with the key itself and not the key pad and it worked so try that, hopefully it'll help

Another thing to try is to look for bad wire connections on the starter and/or solenoid. In the long run the connectors may become corroded or broken. Replace the connectors and see if problem is solved. Try this if a new battery do not fix the problem. Star with the cheapest step For you (battery or connectors).

I have a 2008 v-70, mine did that and it turned out to be the steering sensor. It is mounted under the steering column. It gets stuck in the up position. Just tap it with a small hammer, to loosen it.

you gave me anxiety rocking the key from P1 to P3 omg. get in P2 wait a second and then hit P3 to start the engine... now enjoy the repair :(

I have changed the battery one year ago and this solved the problem. Did not have any problem after that.

C Bouchard Hi all, I changed the battery, that fixed the problem. Specially if it has more than 5 years. Volvo cars are full of electronics so power from the battery really needs to be at best to avoid weird issues, bad sensors, etc.

This issue is usually because the car needs a new ignition switch. My car had intermittent starting problems and a new ignition switch resolved it.

My car had the same defect. It's a known problem of the starting switch. The problem was away after installing a new switch. There is a modified starting switch. Being a retired elektricien and an investigator I wanted to know what was wrong with the old switch. When I took the old switch apart I saw 5 brass contacts. 4 of these contacts had a good "spring" touch. The 5th was more or less lame, due to a sharper bend in the brass spring when pushing on it. In my opinion it was a kind of metal fatigue on the starting contact. I concluded only a new switch would solve the problem. Putting the switch in took me 1 hour of my time, mostly to find out where all T25 screws were.

Thanks. I watched that one before. My car seems staring fine now. I didn't do anything. Maybe some dusts in the key module. Wish you good luck with your car.

I had the issue of being locked in the car! Drove my Mother to the Doctor and decided to stay in the car, few minutes after parking turned car off and pulled the key. Few minutes later the car locked itself? I thought maybe my Mother accidentally hit the lock button on her key? Tried the unlock switch, clicked but didn’t unlock, pulled door handle, door knob popped up and immediately locked. Tried door knob by pulling it up would not unlock! Inserted key, tried to start car but no start just message Key Not Found! Tried different things with no effect, Waite for Mother to come out and Her remote didn’t work either had to use the metal key from outside to finally open car. Inserted her key No Key Found! Had car towed and ignition module replaced, has worked since.

could easily be a low battery, if you're having trouble starting a car always turn all luxuries off (you have the radio running) as they draw current from the battery

Someone told me that rust can build between the connecter, and you have to pull out the battery and clean the connecter from the CEM and the ECM.

No not yet. But some macanics are telling me to change the ignition key module. About 250$ for the module and maybe 2 hours for the installation. Volvo just can't say nothing more because there is no code from the computer.

Had same problem so had car towed to dealer ship and needed soft wear upload and new alternator .expensive but fixed

Do you get any message on the dssh board? Mine is immobiliser see manual. After a few tries, it suddenly started again. Before that I got a message, key error, try again. I had the car washed (motor and inside), then I got such problems.

Ah the dreaded “ immobilizer, see manual” message… Swedespeed has alot of info on this in their forums. There are up to 30 different problems that can cause this message to appear after a no start accompanied with positions 1 and 2 perfectly functional. and none of them will register a code on DICE (proprietary Volvo code reader) or any other code reader! IMPORTANT: If position 1 and 2 work, your key doesnt need to be replaced!!!!! Dont let the stealership charge you for a new key!!!! Causes of the “immobilizer, see manual” message can include: -Loose relay -loose connector somewhere -Bad relay in the engine compartment fuse box -Bad relay in the ecm under the glove compartment -Bad transponder that senses your key -starter system needs to be reset -A connector is loose somewhere -One of the many ECM fuses is out -corrosion on any contact point in the ECM -corrosion in any connector in the car going to or from the ecm -corrosion in any connector in the car going to or from the starter REMINDER: If no codes are showing up in a code reader: it’s not your starter, Its not your computer. And if position 1 and 2 work And its not your key!!! The solution (if not one of the five things the manual suggests doing) is really just troubleshooting and poking around for hours; Getting two cans of OCM contact cleaner and cleaning every connection you can find; Checking every fuse even casually related to your ECM, computer, or starter. PS- Always unhook the battery in a Volvo before working on anything connected to electricity!!! If you don’t? Your car will then throw a code telling you the thing you just fixed has a problem.

( en ecoutant la radio) bref,je vais t'aider ,moi qui est proprio de la meme voiture une volvo v50 ,et j'avais le meme probleme que toi ,j'etais obligé a chaque fois de faire plusieurs essais pour démarrer le vehicule,je suis parti voir un bon electricien ,et le probleme se trouvait dans le neiman ,au niveau des trucs qui font une masse a l'interieur ,et il m' aréparé ca pour mille fois rien ,alors n'hesite pas a aller voir un bon electro....bon courage,et tiens moi au courant

Bonsoir et bon fete de aid Jai ete sur le cite sujet des problele delarrage volvo v50 Jai vu que cous avez trouve la solustion cest possible ou trouver une lasse dans le neilan lerci d'avance je suis en galere avec cette voiture la cle tourne mais rien qui se passe tout qui allume lerci
