We test the updated 2022 Volvo XC60 and see if this B6 R-Design is the right spec.

The Volvo XC60 is one of our favourite luxury crossovers. It competes with the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q5, but in many ways it feels more solid and comfortable than those vehicles - but you do need to specify it in a certain way. The air suspension ($2600) in particular is a helpful option.
In today’s episode of Chasing Cars, Tom reviews the facelifted 2022 XC60 B6 R-Design, which has 220kW of power (295 hp) and standard AWD with 48-volt mild hybrid tech. The B6 R-Design costs $82,490 before on-road costs and options here in Australia. Less powerful B5 Momentum and B5 Inscription trims are also available.

I love my 2022 XC60 B5 Inscription. It drives and ride like you’re on a cloud. Really smooth. There’s so much it does, I haven’t learned it all. Mine is crystal white with blonde interior, sunroof and tinted windows. I would have preferred Siri than google but it’s ok.

In Europe you can get 2 Diesel engines - b4 and b5 - these are called exactly as petrol ones - hard to tell what's under the bonnet. The momentum, inscription and r-design are gone. Now we have light and dark exteriors - where dark is the r-design one. You can also choose from six interior colors. Currently drive XC40 r-design d4, but picking up XC60 r-design in Cristal white b5 (petrol one) next month.

This one would likely be my choice in this segment. The 21in wheels look great. The front fascia is simple-no crazy lines or fake vents-yet it looks modern and elegant. I also love that Volvo has kept the separate fog lights in the lower part of the bumper. Then you add what is arguably the best sound system, based on testimonies from car journalists around the world, and I am sold.

I own a MY21 XC60 T6 R-Design with Polestar. Polestar ECU upgrade was standard in all T6 R-design in Australia. Since it is now a breakaway company, the B6 R-Design missed out on the extra tune and down on power compared to T6 R-Design. I previously own a Lexus RX400h & Mercedes GLC250, both doesn’t ride as good, less power and surprisingly used more fuel on my regular long trips to the regional area. I never thought I would buy a Volvo because of the stigma of “bloody Volvo driver” 🤣 until I test drove the XC60. I've got the Bower & Wilkins in the XC60. Based on my experience, it's slightly better than the Burmester and Bang & Olufsen, miles ahead of Harman Kardon and Mark Levinson.

We have owned an XC60 R Design for just over 3 years now and while we love the car, the biggest disappointment has been the way it goes through brake rotors and pads. We had to replace both front and rear brake rotors and pads at 18 months ($2K) and just replaced the rear brake rotors and pads again ($800) and the fronts will be due again soon. Car has less than 40K kms and is driven sedately mostly for school and shopping runs. Explanation given is the stability control but find these running costs totally unacceptable. Was the first and now the last Volvo we buy.

Do you use the adaptive cruise control by chance? That relies only on the rear brakes

For some reason, rotors are being replaced along with pads. I don't see why. I remember about 10 years ago only the pads would be replaced and the rotors wouldn't be replaced for a long time. That's a short life for pads and rotors. But some other Volvos have actually bigger problems. All-in-all, your car seems to be doing well.

My 2016 GLC had its rear rotor + pad replaced at 30k km. This is the biggest reason for me to look at non euro cars in oz unfortunately. A family member got more than 100k out of his original pad + rotor from his Tiguan, I would guess it’s because it’s localised to his country? Why can’t we have it here in oz 🙄

@benjaminsmith2287

Nice review, thorough and fair. Air suspension. Well, if and when it breaks or needs servicing, it's ridiculously expensive. So you may want to think about that. Yes, the regular suspension may not be as fluid but it's not as expensive to fix if and when it's needed. If opting for the regular suspension, smallest tires possible, take off 2 lbs of psi from what Volvo recommends. The overall car is a familiar design. It's middle-aged and I guess I'm ready for the next-gen EV Volvos (although I can't get one new, out of my means). I'm just interested in seeing them and what they're like and test-driving them. I've driven a Polestar 2. I feel that's a Volvo albeit with a sportier suspension. Loved it. For now, this is a classic, elegant Volvo. Be aware it's expensive to run and you'll be OK. But expect the maintenance bills to be Euro expensive.
@Skye_the_toller
@Skye_the_toller 2 года назад
Remove 2 lbs air in the tire? You will pay more for gaz and more for the tires, losing driving experience… after 4 years under warranty, you will loss enough money to regret not buying the air suspension!
@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 2 года назад
@@Skye_the_toller Yes. There's no need to use the psi Volvo recommends. It will make the ride more comfortable but still well controlled. the air suspension is a lot of money to replace if it goes. But that's the customer's choice.

I do have a 2021 XC60 T5 and it’s a joy to drive. Weirdly enough, although all reviewers mention the seats are super comfortable, I’m little bit uncomfortable on the seat. I feel the base is a bit too firm and I find myself leaning a bit towards the centre console. It is to the point that I actually put a level on the seat to make sure it’s not crooked and it actually wasn’t. It might be because I lean a bit subconsciously to rest my arm on the centre console but I also do have a GLB and I don’t feel the same way but other than that which might be just the way I sit or maybe my seat, I cannot fault the car. It’s an eye candy, accelerates like a hot hatch, perfectly priced and oh my God about the safety features. They’re second to none. The lane centring feels like it’s me driving! Comparing to the GLB which kind of jiggles little bit in the lane, the XC60 drives perfectly. I mean that the car behind cannot tell it’s the car driving. The wireless charger is useless though. It’s not cooled (doesn’t have a fan) so if you put your phone on it for more than a little while it cooks your phone. It’s only for emergencies. I only wish it had a cooled glovebox or centre console. BTW, do not forget to get the cooled seat. Black leather in Australia, you’ll regret saving that money everyday like me!

Tom, you didn’t mention the absolutely ridiculous design flaw at 3:43 The bonnet lifts so (unnecessarily) high, that, if you are of average height, say around 5’8”, it is impossible to close it, as you would normally do, from the front middle edge. As I discovered in person, one has to grab it on the side, which is quite difficult and awkward because one cannot get enough leverage on it! Has anyone else noticed this ?

Volvo are now winding down diesel production globally. Remaining MY22 oilers are reserved for Europe & some other markets. Diesel production will finish completely by yrs end . There are still stocks of MY21 Diesels still available & these will last on sale here for several more months. The fact that diesel variants won't return may put some buyers off once the last of the current diesels are sold .

Personally, I feel the market is quickly getting to the point where I would want an element of electric assistance / propulsion in anything I buy, from hybrid (if needing range reassurance for longer trips) through to full electric. I do think that ICE vehicle running costs will be rising over the next 5 years, while their resale values substantially diminish. Seems to me too, that electric based vehicles are the ones that will from now on be bringing the greater degree of technological development including chassis and safety gear. As "nice" or "good" as this XC60 may be - and I definitely do think that a vehicle should be a hell of a lot better than nice or good at the suggested drive away prices - to me, ICE vehicles are starting to feel like the 'past', and a poor investment over all. Sure, electric vehicles could do with some further, next gen developments such as solid-state batteries and longer range to deserve their pricing. However, to me, that simply means I will delay my next car purchase for another few years, even if I were to feel tempted to buy a new car now. My current, six year old vehicle (Hyundai Santa Fe) will easily see out another few years unti then.
@chasingcars
@chasingcars 2 года назад
I think you are partially correct - but the switch won’t just flick in 2025 and suddenly everyone will be buying BEVs - it will be a slow slide towards that conclusion in the 2030s. And not everybody has the luxury of waiting until the latter half of the decade to buy their next car - people’s families are growing all the time and their tastes change. I am of the view that one final ICE purchase is OK - but probably not for much longer

This car's EV successor is coming around 2025. The XC90 successor is due out late this year but probably on sale early next year. It seems it will look a lot different inside than this car does. You can get plug in hybrid versions of this current xc60. I'm ready for the next-gen Volvos. While still elegant, this cabin now has become very familiar. Still, it's quite elegant. Delaying buying a car makes sense. Let the EV market mature some and right now, there's a shortage of EV cars and long waiting lists. Also, infrastructure and charging networks hopefully will improve in a few years.

Bought a Polestar engineered one and am very disappointed with the infotainment system! Lots of functions such as control of cruise control have moved to the main menu, and that makes it useless! Also, the finish is not on par with Germans like Mercedes GLC! Just check the empty hole in the back pumper, where the trailer hitch should be, and they didn't bother to cover it! or the finishes in the cabin, how they handle the area under the steering wheel or beneath the seats. Remember that the car is around 70-80K, loaded, and it doesn't live up to the standards of German cars like BMWX3 or AUDI Q5.

What makes it a Chinese car? IMO, since it is engineered, designed and tested in Sweden by the European personnel that has created Volvos over the years, it's Swedish. I buy many products that are assembled in China. Assembled in China no longer means cheap. Volvos are made in several factories. From what I've read, there's no difference in quality at all in the factories except there are some issues with some s60s built in the USA. You're not getting a cheaper Volvo made in one factory vs. another.

Volvos have awful interiors, hope these seats are better than the last model they were shockers and those awful headrests, a safe car definitely, but owned by and made in China … that’s a deal breaker

owed by China but not made in China. It is made in Belgium, Ghent city, Sweden Torslanda region and also in USA. let me only ask you this.... Land Rover is owned and built in India, by an indian company called Tata motors. Is it less refined and luxurious, and high end quality because of that? of course not. come on...be intellectually fair.

@@MrTribalsun horrible build quality and nothing close to German rivals. You clearly see they are cutting here and there to save money. I own one and I might say it seems that there wasn’t any proper Quality control. A big waste of money! One example, AC of my brand new XC60 has stopped working in middle if summer, TWICE, had to stop the car, park, hard-reset the infotainment system and it started to work again! We are talking about a car with same price tag of Mercedes GLC and AUDI Q5!!! RUBBISH
