One of the clearest differences between phase modulation and linear+through zero FM is how they behave with a square wave modulator. When the square jumps, the PM oscillator jumps to a different part of its phase, while the FM oscillator gets a corner as it suddenly starts going faster. Jumps sound buzzy compared to corners, so PM tends to be slightly harsher than "true" TZFM.
One way to explain phase modulation is by pointing out that this is what Yamaha marketed as "FM" in the DX series of eighties. Now the whole room will nod and we can move on to the next topic
This company has intrigued me since I first saw your video on the Cosmix. Which I will be adding soon cuz it's the coolest eurorack mixer out there imho (Cosmix Pro!) This is amazing sounding and I may have to add also. Really dig how they do things
hi, may i ask what reverb, or combination of effects, did you use in the first example, where vortex osc are panned full wide ? PS beautiful theme and lead sound from 7:12 onwards. wonderful..
I recorded that session as a part of the 259 series and my case did not have any reverb. So the reverb you're hearing is from Native Instruments Replika XT in the DAW. It's a delay, but it has this great diffusion mode. So I learned the 'best' reverbs are actually delays with reverb. Desmodus Versio comes close, StarLab comes very close.
The vortex combines the sounds of the Shared System in one module: There is the complex oscillator (DPO), the Ringmod (Modemix) and the LPG (Optomix) mixed up creating something completely new.
I currently have Sofia and Shapeshifter as my "big" oscillators but I've been wanting to play with vortex more, I don't think I gave it enough time before I semi-downsized. This settles it, when I do a little rearranging after I'm done with my current patch, vortex is going back in for a while.
You could say that, but actually it's two voices doing different things with different sounds. I also used two GC channels. I had both oscillators panned hard left/right. I'd say it's either multi timbral mono or duophony. GC can do true polyphony over midi with a module like Knobula Poly Cinematic.
@@CinematicLaboratory I was referring to the patch around 7:00, but it looks like you are only using 1 cv track. It is probably a legato glide! haha no wonder! brilliant. It has opened my eyes. Thanks for the reply, and the beautiful video.
Mee too. I want to buy my second complex vco. I own Brenso, and it is amazing. I'm going to buy an Instruo Cs-L but I'm looking for Vortex Cosmotronic too. Very difficult to choose.
