While a Thomann Gearhead University (TGU 2019) I had a wonderful chat with Phil Scarffe an engineer from VOX. Phil and I had a lot to talk about, first was the Vox AC10 which I never knew was such a thing. - I may have been living underground, haha.
Second was the remarkable MV50's which despite their small size, they’re punching well above their 1lb weight class! And finally the latest and greatest Vox had to show off at TGU 2019, their AC30 S1 otherwise known as the AC30 ONETWELVE.

I recently bought a Marshall 2525h. I went for the HD3 one, absolutely love the look of it. This is a fantastic amp and easily gig-able at 20 watts. Plug it in and set the gain to 12 o'clock going through some V30's and its Malcolm & Angus. Gonna get the matching greenback 2x12 soon.

Thank you Warren and Paul! The MV range looks interesting, but I must admit my favorite part of the video is when Brian May is mentioned. Man, that room lit up with the joy and enthusiasm of two schoolboys! It brought me back to 1975 when I begged my father to drive me to the record store to buy the original 7" 45 rpm release of "Bohemian Rhapsody". Absolutely lovely!! - chaz.

I'd honestly never heard of the AC10. Having coveted the AC30 after hearing stories about so many artists using them - primarily The Edge and Brian May - that's been the Ultimate amp I've been aiming for. After learning about and hearing that AC10, however, I very suddenly have a new goal on the horizon haha Loved the video, as always. Looks like you had a lot of fun with these Vox amps, and they all certainly sound fantastic!

I love those little MV50 GnuToobs! I have all 5 of them....because ;-]. All of them do what it sez on the tin very well. Awesome for pre-prod quick tones. They are good enough for production too as an alternative to your main squeeze (s). An amp switcher like the KAHAYAN is very handy. The 8" speaker is also worth having, again for pre-prod or for something sonically different than your usual cab.

Tip; I have tried taming my AC-10C1 to make the controls more manageable. First I had a JAN Philips NOS 5751in V1, and it helped a little. Today I put a JJ12AU7 in V1, and there it was!! gain at twelve, volume at twelve, bas and treble at twelve and reverb at nine. Perfect sound and volume as a starting point, much easier to adjust gain and volume form clean to top boost. You might think that the 12au7 would be too weak, but no, it's perfect for getting right control of tone and volume! highly recommended.

LOVE my AC-10! I have though added a parallel speaker jack (on the 10"), for using loadboxes and linedrivers, because the amps speaker-out shuts of the internal speaker. This way I can reintroduce the speaker signal to the speaker, and also use it to drive other amps through it (using it as a speaker cab, without using the amp). VOX you really should add this feature, it's a very simple mod ;-)

My favorite amp is my ‘73 Marshall Superbass. For both guitar and bass actually. It has tons of headroom, loves pedals, and really lets the sound of the particular guitar come through. Not very practical though. My desert island amp is my ‘69 Deluxe Reverb. Perfect size, volume and can cover most anything. Not ideal for hard rock, but a true workhorse nonetheless. The one style of amp I’ve never owned is a Vox. Something I’ve been wanting to check out for a long time.

I miss my mid-90s AC15 but I wouldn't give up my Roland JC77 or JC90 for anything, except possibly a Brian May AC30. Even then... I use 2 amps, one for clean (Roland JC) and a PRS Custom 20 for distorted sounds for originals with a Morley AB/Y pedal. For clubs and playing covers, I use the Custom 20 only, no need for the two amp setup for that. (SUPER clean sound and 'verb!) The AC30S1 is now officially on my radar for recording.

The Cure - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me for a great ac30 sound.. you mentioned in another video the cheap boss pedals Robert Smith uses as part of his sound, but I think it's the AC30 lightly breaking up depending on how hard he is picking (which the edge also does) that really makes that tone where your picking controls if it's completely clean or light breakup.

I'm a Shadows fan and have been using the Vox AC 30 Top Boost since the very beginning!! There 'is'no other amp for me! I've tried many!! The Hank Marvin sound was simply dynamic, introducing the AC 30, a few years before The Beatles! Yet, whenever there's a demo on any Vox product, there are only 'over-driven' sound demos and never that clean sound, with maybe an extremely small bit over overdrive! How about the other thousands who want this!!?

Hi Warren, slightly unrelated to the video but I was hoping to hear your opinion about hearing loss as someone who has been in this industry for a long time. Have you personally had problems with hearing loss, tinnitus, or ear pain in any way? Do you set hard limits on how long and how loud you listen to music while mixing. How do you balance listening to music loud in a professional context as opposed to listening to music just for enjoyment? Thanks so much!

The very early AC30s actually did use EL34s. Just throwing that out there for those who didn't know!
@JimijaymesProductions
@JimijaymesProductions 4 года назад
More importantly alot of the Beatles 'ac30' tones were ac50 and ac100s which were fixed biased el34s. Cathode biased el34s are kind of a middle of the two sounds and I wish there were more ac30 inspired amps with el34s (bad cat hot cat and cub are sort of somewhat influenced but not really).
@Stoney3K
@Stoney3K 4 года назад
@@JimijaymesProductions And a fixed biased EL34 circuit would *in fact* be class A because each tube is always conducting some current, that's the definition of class A amps. Class B amps always have a set of tubes (or transistors) which are basically switched off during each part of the wave. The crossover distortion is caused by the area where the tube is opening up and conducting bias current, but there's not yet any current that carries sound yet.

In the case of BM sound. Even though he quite always use an AC30 (or a deacky), the speaker used throughout the years did change. Going from Blue to silver, to greenback, to new bluedog... having change my 2000's celestion bluedog to 67's bluedog, the sound is hugely different. not even close. the Current Bluedog have far much low end. I own an ac15c1 from when they first came out with that line. Best amp I've ever owned. I get decent mileage (a year or two for power tubes) and a happy sound using EH tubes. I can't deal with solid state or emulators or this nutube business. They are nice options for someone with limited cash, space or other options, but I'm past those worries.

@@Producelikeapro I just never hear you talk about them all that much. Although I understand there are many bands to talk about. I am personally an extra-large radiohead fan myself.

If you want to know how smart Brian May is, he is now a physicist. He finally finished his physics degree and did his thesis on, what other physicists say is the most boring subject, space dust. Yes, he makes space dust interesting.

What I find interesting is the low end on the ac10’s comparatively to ac 15 and ac 30’s, ac10 has more bass. Weird.

Why you have 3 amps and "Demo" in the title of the video when you choose to talk about them instead of playing? Change "Demo" to "Story behind them" in title.
