VP shunt or ventriculoperitoneal shunt is a process for taking out excessive cerebrospinal fluid got deposited in the ventricles of the brain and spinal cord. risk factors for such conditions are the production of excessive CSF fluid, low absorption of CSF, or some blockage.
This causes abnormally big head size, headache, seizures, irritability, incontinence, loss of memory, and poor coordination.
In this procedure a VP shunt, a medical device is placed to release the pressure building upon the brain because of the fluid accumulation.
The primary condition is hydrocephalous for which we need VP shunting. it is done under general anesthesia and the device is placed behind the ear.
The fluid drips out and is collected, this continues till the condition is normal.
The doctor who can do VP shunting is a neurologist, neurosurgeon, and a spine surgeon.
The success rate of VP shunting largely depends upon the age of the patient and the etiologica factor which has caused the situation to arise.
In general, the success rate is around 50% as there are chances of shunt tubes getting infected or obstructed.

I have a vp shunt put in my brain since I was a little kid. I'm 21 but I'm turning 22 years old next month on June 3rd and my shunt and I have been doing well!😊

I had my shunt tube inside me since I was 3 and at 26, my shunt failed and they had to place a new tube on the right side of my head and leave the left alone since it's been working for almost 30 years. There's no way you're going back to the same hospital 5 years later. The VP Shunt lasted for decades.

I had my first shunt placed when I was 15 days old, replaced at age 2 and then had that one in until I was 21. I'm now 31 and still have my 3rd shunt in.

23yo, last changed when i was 10 due to short distance not problems so i think that 5 years change period is bs.

My grand son had shunt from first year of his age. At 4 his shunt is replaced. Thanks to the doctors who assessed in emergency that vomiting is because of blockage of shunt. He just after replacement was fine. Little one was having a feeling of razzered hair.

I got it when I was a baby, I’m 15 now, I had a revision when I was close to a year old but they fixed it and I’ve been fine since, I can ride rollercoasters, play football. I can do almost anything any other kid can do, two exceptions are sky diving and deep sea diving, that’s it, I’m perfectly fine

@@Heisenberg7-ix4le Hi there, im 18 rn and will get my shunt next month. Does shunt make your life any harder? Or is there any limitations? Currently i go to gym, do martial arts and etc. Also do you have any pain or what are the downsides? Thanks.
