I can definitely recommend to check the Vaultmaps contests, as there have been many awesome and unique maps created for it(with the last being Portal related). I myself have made multiple maps for Alyx and these contests, mainly trying to take advantage of VR - so fun stuff like Drivable cars or Functional Spaceships and a lot more. There are some showcases on this channel if you're interested.

@thcirblueerf Yeah, it got a little stale initially, as people were still figuring the new Source 2 tools out and by the time some more experimental mods started coming out, there wasn't that many players as a lot of them lost interest. So if you look at the top-rated mods, vast majority of them came out within first few months after the tools were released(which was May of 2020), because new mods have a hard time with getting as many reviews as after the first "boom" of excitement and thus what most players will see are the initial efforts that are very similar to each other. Which is why I believe that exposing the modding community once again could be extremely beneficial for all the modders and players interested in VR and Alyx. It's still a great template for all sorts of VR experiences and the latest mods are definitely the proof of that. I highly recommend you to check it out.

The youtuber Skummeh would be a great place to start if you look for maps to play. He literally played every single map on the Workshop, recorded his playthrough and made a review with feedback to the creator. Seriously, I can't stress enough how nice and awesome this man is. He's been helping around the community a lot, especially when it comes to helping modders gather feedback, along with other things.

I truly don’t understand why other manufacturers aren’t copying the index controllers. Whenever I play on my friends quest 2 all I can think is just how inferior it’s controllers are. The Index controllers are SO much better than the competition that I’d recommend the index for the controllers alone.
@klystron2010
@klystron2010 2 года назад
Quest 2 needs to track the controllers with the headset, not lighthouses, so I guess they need that ring thing on them. And they just use the headset cameras for finger tracking, but you obviously can't have both controllers and finger tracking at once that way, because the controllers occlude the fingers.
@fireaza
@fireaza 2 года назад
Well, that's not much of a surprise, considering the Index controllers cost almost as much as the Quest 2 itself! But yeah, the features and design of the Index controller should be the industry standard.
2 года назад
@@klystron2010 Correct me if I am wrong but controller and finger tracking would be very much possible at the same time. The finger movement and it's tracking would be in no conflict with the controller tracking since the index uses sensors all around the controller to track the finger movement. Other headset could very well implement that feature too. The controllers track the fingers and the headset cameras track the controllers. In addition, the AI tries to correct the lack of data that might occure.

just controller comfort in general is an area that needs some attention, I've heard a lot about the index's controllers, and all I can say is the quest 2's leave a lot to be desired, being able to grip objects without pushing a button would do wonders for my hands, not to mention wrist loops should've died with the wii, strapping to the hand sounds miles better. Of all the VR stuff coming out I'm still amazed that the Index Knuckles are the only controllers that understand it's better to strap to your hand instead of your wrist. I feel like the G2 is underrated and so much more than just "a good option for simmers". Of course if you don''t have a half decent computer it's the quest 2 or nothing but the G2's quality is so much better and factoring the frequent sales the value is arguably better if you are a frequent vr user (well depending on your use case of course). I get that a lot of people were burned by the tracking and fov but if you can get your hands on a version 2 I highly recommend it. I feel most of his review was really bias. He glossed over the vive pro2 which aside from pimax 8kx is the best consumer headset. It's compatible wirelessly, there's foveated rendering in the works, there's facial tracking, it's 120hz, it uses index controllers (and they're cheaper than the vive controllers, so there was no reason to say the controllers were bad for this headset) it's got a really good fov compared to everything except pimax (including index) but when index came he said "res is a bit out of date" when the res is absolutely abysmal, it's got zero compatibility for wireless etc. it's got equally awful dual stacked glare producing lenses etc but he called it the best all rounder. I strongly believe the G2 is the best all rounder, and I think the VP2 is the successor of the index but not an all rounder because of the lens quality. But he owns an index so I really think that's why he put bias in there, I'm not saying it was intentional, but the index doesn't have the best anything, but it does have the worst image, so I can't call that an all rounder like the G2 is. The only reason the G2 wasn't the all rounder last year was the tracking which is since fixed, now there is zero reason to buy an index over the G2.

This is all super exciting for the VR space. I love the innovation and I love the competition. I've had the HTC Vive since 2016 and since then, have acquired over 50 VR games. I play at least 10 hours per week and have seen the evolution of VR tech and game mechanics over the past 5/6 years - it's all been fantastic. My take on all this is that for me *personally* for me to shell out the cash for a new VR headset, it'll be the NEXT generation of VR tech that gets me to put my hand in my pocket. Am I missing out on resolution and clarity still sitting on my HTC Vive? Certainly! Do I have the best controllers out there? Nope! Am I missing out on the comfort other headsets bring? Oh yeah! I feel though, like those things are only really emphasized when you get the opportunity to compare them side by side. For example, I didn't realize what I was missing in resolution until I got to try someones Quest 2, same with the comfort. So If I manage to trick myself into looking the other way for another year or two, I don't think I'll be any worse off game-play wise, especially having a PC that can do some supersampling within the SteamVR settings. But I just can't part with my Vive right now. Non of these next generation headsets seem to be the "full package". The Index has the controllers and the speakers - but not the resolution. The HP Reverb G2 has the resolution, the comfort however the controllers don't quite compare to the Index, nor do the stability or the speakers. For me, that's the reason I'm holding off for whatever comes *AFTER* this. I'm hoping that the "Next, next" headsets, will be a golden year for VR, similar to how the 30 series GPU's were a golden year for gaming. If you're buying your first VR headset, you can't go wrong with any of these options and you'll be having a fantastic time with any of them, but for me - I just can't part with my trust Vive yet... flaws and all.

Your statistics are absolute bullshit. Valve's official research documentation shows around %60 FPS increase with foveated rendering. Not "16x to over 64x". Your peripheral visual is not as detailed yes, but you still can't get away with rendering those parts at too low resolution, They still need to be decently high - like 1080p. Especially since you can still perceive sharp contrast differences in peripheral vision pretty well (think of stars for example, rendering stars at low resolution would result in very-very annoying popping artifacts.) And it is not like current games are not using same tricks. They just apply it to center of the image instead of having the effect where you are focusing at. This is of course, unless you are fully content with having 5 degree FoV. But even then game engine still needs to process all the AI behaviour, physics etc just the same.
@jujuteuxOfficial
@jujuteuxOfficial 2 года назад
@@Navhkrin no, current games don't They use viewport culling, wich still renders the entire screen In this case we can reduce the render from two 5k screens to 2 1080p screens, wich is 25x faster. hell you could even go lower if you made the resolution an actual circle since it's 57% less vs a square and the 1080 is a 16:9 So 5^2/((1-0.785)*9/16) = 57x reduction at the 10° reading cone Everything else can be basically set to potato mode and you get a 55 ppd headset with a ~50x increase in fps

(And for this reason the oculus will be the most profitable since even if it becomes outdated it is still super cheap compared to others)

I hope you realize that they are selling the Quest 2 at a loss in order to gain a huge market share so they can be in control of the market and lock people down to their storefront in order to recover the funds by selling games and applications not to mention that they are buying up any VR developers and VR game studios they can in order for them to release exclusively on their storefront and in order for them to focus on Quest compatible games and often even Quest exclusive games. In the end Facebook is very Anti Consumer and honestly nobody should support their practices and what they're doing isn't good for VR in the long run at all but we all know that the hardware is good aside from the comfort and nobody can really beat the price since they're selling it at a loss and in order to compete other companies would have to sell at a loss as well and considering the size of those companies compared to Facebook they don't have the amount of available funds in order to get cheaper manufacturing costs by buying in bulk or just by sheer reputation.

Hey Philip, would you consider making another video like this for 2023? I'm thinking about trading in my first gen Vive for something wireless and easier to use, but doing research into the market it looks like there are a ton of potential new headsets coming later this year; so I'm unsure whether to go for something like a Quest 2 now, or to wait and see what we get (like Valve's "Deckard", especially since I already have the Index Knuckles). Regardless, I greatly appreciate the time and effort put into this video, and I'll definitely be using it as a resource when I make my decision. Thanks!

I'm still on a OG Vive and think it's still a great experience. But the resolution makes me want more sometimes, a resolution where watching a whole movie or a tv-show on my headset without a bad experience would be really cool. The controllers would be cool to upgrade but I have never been annoyed at the OG Vive sticks tbh, they work great still! Would the Quest 2 feel like a upgrade worth the money? I'm not rich by any means so a upgrade for me would need to mean a much better experience and I'm not sure that any of the "cheaper" headsets is worth it.

Oh yeah I suppose that's right. Like if the definition of being next gen is to make a decent game on a new platform, well you got pavlov and likely many others. HLA I then don't think is anything special, apart from that it's a game with great (valve) attention to detail - I find it a boring, pretty walking simulator, with basic though enjoyable (but very short) combat.
@friendofp.24
@friendofp.24 2 года назад
@@telgou The game's mechanics are designed entirely for VR, but also doesn't fall into the tropes most gimmicky VR games follow. The game's gravity gun, the gravity hands, make total sense for VR controllers. A huge amount of objects are physics based. They also have a huge amount of detail, interactivity, and often times react with other objects in the world, which heavily compliments VR's level of input. Levels in Alyx are designed so that you won't need to spin around too much, they are crammed with those aforementioned physics objects to gawk at. Combat encounters focus more on tactics, staying behind cover, flanking, rather than guns blazing. Guns blazing and 30 enemies on screen is much harder in VR. The game doesn't do weird restrictions that make it feel gimmicky, like locking you in a tight area like most VR games, or relying entirely some niche mechanic. Plus, the game is structured and feels like an actual, linear story based game like Half Life 2, and not a tech demo with a story tacked on.

One incredible uses for augmented reality is for flight simulators, If you think a full VR setup where your hands reach out in a virtual cockpit is fun, or if you think physical hardware with a screen in front of you is fun, imagine having the benefits of both. 100% physical buttons and layout like the real thing, but when you look "out the window" (keyed by a greenscreen) you're looking in the "AR" world, outside of the aircraft like you would in real life. It's truly insane how good it feels too. It's tremendously expensive of course, but such a joy to fly.

I have an Oculus Rift CV1 I bought from a friend for $150 USD but then we got the kids an Oculus Quest 2 128GB for $300 plus elite strap and Logitech earphones for Xmas, and they have not put it down. I really don’t like that you can’t play rift games on the Quest 2 without some kind of AirLink cable, or vice versa (so hard to play games together with two VR headsets) but so far the kids will not put down their headset and with no cables or PC needed it’s really convenient for them. Only issue is the lenses and how they keep getting them greasy with their eyelashes, etc. I haven’t even bothered to clean the lenses yet because last time I used a microfiber towel on my CV1 I scratched the lense barely just trying to get a bit of dust off. Really wish the lenses & the battery inside these headsets were replaceable. Also not sure how I get higher framerate in the Quest 2 & didn’t know it had that option but I’ll see if I can figure that out. I def like the clearer resolution of the Quest 2 over the screen door I get with the CV1

Airlink is the wireless (preferably done over 5ghz wifi or wifi6) solution. (Theres also Virtual Desktop for quest which also can be used for wireless pcvr, it's paid but some ppl prefer it) Link is the cabled solution, though I don't see the issue since CV1 also needs a cable anyway, if you're worried about the official cable costing alot, there are cheaper 3rd party cables (technically any usb 3.0+ cable thats long enough and has a type c connector should work) Are you sure you cleaned the microfiber cloth before using it? Maybe it had some sharp dust idk? I had a vive and now a q2 and never had issues with my microfiber cloth scratching the lens. 120 Hz can be enabled in experimental settings. If you wanna use 120 Hz for PCVR ur gonna need to go to Oculus app=>Devices=>Q2 and Touch=>Graphics Preferences and set 120 Hz. I too wish Q2 would be easier to replace stuff on and had more open software, but unfortunately that's the current situation for alot of tech :(

How has noone else tried pushing the VR headsets like pimax has, especially the fov. Most baffling to me is that everyone else is still stuck with 120 fov or less, while Pimax is at 200.
