0/ Calibrate your Joycons' motion sensors with a Nintendo Switch. It's in Settings, Controllers and Sensors, Calibrate Motion Controls
1/ Download and install SlimeVR and SlimeVR Wrangler from the description
2/ Connect all your Joycons to your PC via bluetooth by holding down the Sync button on your Joycons until their lights turn on in a back and forth pattern and connect them to Windows like any Bluetooth device
3/ Run Wrangler and click "Search for Joycons"
3.5/ If all your Joycons don't appear : close Wrangler and disconnect then reconnect them all in the Bluetooth Settings, then run Wrangler again
4/ When they're picked up by Wrangler put your Joycons on your body according to what SlimeVR needs, you can read their documentation or watch tutorials
5/ In Wrangler you should see two arrows above each Joycon. Click on the arrows to rotate the Joycons : the images need to match the position of the Joycons on your body
6/ Run SlimeVR Server. The trackers, here Joycons, should be picked up and shown as regular trackers. Then you just use the SlimeVR options to put each one on each part of your body accordingly
7/ Run SteamVR.
8/ On the SlimeVR Server, click "RESET" on top and stand straight for 5 seconds. This will calibrate your trackers according to your body automatically
9/ Done! You should see your trackers when you look down at your body in VR and they should work with any game that supports it. See tutorials on Full Body Tracking for each game if you have issues

If you want to try this, you'll have to fine-tune SlimeVR a bit to get the trackers to point and turn in the right directions. For that, you can launch SteamVR to see your controllers and tracker(s), and use the "RESET" or "Fast Reset" buttons on top of the SlimeVR GUI : it'll re-center the trackers' positions. The Joycons are connected to the PC via Bluetooth, nothing fancy.

Didn't think it would work, but here we are! I'm extremely happy that the tracking turned out to be this good, and that I'm this close to Full Body Tracking. I should've recorded my first reaction, gosh the euphoria... I'll try to find a good camera for AprilTag to get my legs working properly in-game, but even without legs this is already a totally acceptable setup for VR for me.

SlimeVR trackers will be better as they don't drift over time, but definitely give your Joycons a go! Maybe yours will be more reliable than mine ^^

@@ChickenScratch I don't see any reviews or people on the SlimeVR server complaining about drift. I think the IMUs in their trackers also have a geomagnetism sensor to actually calibrate precisely (not sure tbh). They also use higher quality sensors than Joycons

@@ChickenScratch SlimeVR tracker definitely do drift. DIY trackers’ drift will depend on which IMU you’re using. A lot of people are using MPU6050 which drift a LOT. Production trackers (from crowdsupply) use BNO085, so won’t drift nearly as much and have a magnetometer if you want.

with 4 controllers you might get leg tracking but without hip rotation, which would look kinda weird but you can try! or if you have a phone with a gyroscope you can use owoTrack to serve as the 5th tracker for your hips

Have my haptic suit in the mail, decided instead of dropping another 300, I'd use the 4 controllers I have plus my phone for full body tracking! It works pretty well honestly and I might not drop the 300 altogether and stick with this.

I got it all reversed, if i move my waist backwards tracker moves forward, same right moves to left and viceversa. would be nice to have a detailed guide. I also have to reset all the time because it keeps messing up the positions. edit: so I got it to work fine, but movement is not as good as in the video and also I have to reset + recalibrate every 10 seconds because they kinda twist the avatar. Im asking in the discord but also if someone that knows how to get in better please comment, thanks

Seen you in the Discord server, but for other people : if you get too much drift you should try calibrating your Joycons' motion sensors with a Nintendo Switch. It's in Settings -> Controllers and Sensors -> Calibrate Motion Controls

@@davey_fib3702 if you mean reversed tracking, I moved around the joycons, in the discord I was told to use the same orientation as shown in the wrangler software. That helped. But honestly I didnt touched them after that, I found the constant calibration very annoying so even If I followed the advice of Cereal of calibrating with the switch I didn't bother to try them again, because I have a history with electronics, the easy solution never works for me I always have to end up opening the devices and figuring out whats wrong. Hell even my right quest controller is not working just after a month of buying it.

I have a couple of spare joycons one with bad stick drift... I think it's time i repurposed them into footrackers. What's the battery life when they are using the motion sensors constantly and how much motion drift do they have?

The battery life is pretty good, I'd say at least 10 hours but I'd have to test it. The drift isn't the same across all Joycons, at all. Some say that it depends on how old they are, although mine were bought the same day and the left one has notably way more static and active drift (static : drift at rest, active : drift when moving)

technically they *could* work as trackers but 1) their sensors are unreliable, especially if they your wiimote doesn't have Wii Motion Plus 2) they're only 2DOF, meaning they lack one angle of movement compared to everything else

I did this with 4 controllers. 2 up legs and 2 down leg. And a phone for my waist. Work fine but really. I will try with another one on chest later, if it's not working fine, I would recommend it

This Wrangler currently has no support for Dualshock, but I'm interested : how did you get it to be seen in SlimeVR?

@@CerealBowlSystem had the slime software open while pairing and it connected, it did it multiple times while trying wrangler. Not exactly sure if it was glitched but I just assumed it was sensing data from wrangler software and counted as a tracker. Also do you know if they have any plans to add any other controllers for support cause I could see so many other controllers with gyroscope sensors working for this.

you should be just fine chum, the controllers work by connecting to a device using bluetooth, (usually the switch) but this doesnt mean that they cant be hooked up to other things first, or in this case, his pc. your all good

@@opSiix dont sweat it mate and happy trails, but word of advise, if you plan to use the joycons for tracking be sure to get some bootleg ones, they will work just as good and cost half as much so long as they have blue tooth support (and also becuase screw you nintendo im NOT buying more controllers for 90$ that get drift in two weeks)

@@opSiix well as a matter of fact, i nabbed some myself very recently! six for leg and hip tracking, (or three pairs) and they were pretty cheap too, the only bad news is that they're from aliexpress, buuuuuuuuut the reviews seem to be detailing the actual joy cons, so itll be allllllll good! alll youd need after this is a way to fasten them to yourself, but im sure you can figure something out for that, id recommend making a case out of cardboard and hairbands. I'm not sure honestly. Apparently Wrangler works with Pro Controllers, so I tried my unofficial Controller but it wasn't being picked up. My best guess is that it won't work with unofficial Joycons as well :(

I'd love to get this working, but my PC has super unreliable bluetooth. My joycons rarely ever connect correctly, and the bluetooth adapter I bought doesn't work.

I know this is from 10 months ago but, would this method work with out a vr headset? I'm looking into a 3D model for VTubing and streaming with a headset strapped to the top of my head is't going to be comfy, but a joy con wouldn't be to bad. I could replace my headset and controllers for just 3-4 joy cons if its possible.

my guess is that it might be possible but i wouldn't count on it. SlimeVR needs to have a tracker that knows where it is in space, which is always the headset. you could try tho, slimevr does support arm tracking

I had a similar issue, what I did was go into Control Panel -> View Devices and Printers and right click on the undetected Joycons and clicking on "Remove Device". Then connecting them again

the way your virtual skeleton's movements are calculated with this kind of tracking means that for leg tracking you will need 5 trackers at least. if you only have 3 you'll just have "minecraft legs" without any bending at the knees

chances are that Steam itself is trying to use your Joycons as regular controllers. on Steam, in the top left click on "Steam" > "Settings" > "Controller" > "General Controller Settings" and from here you should disable Nintendo Switch controller support and Combine Pairs of JoyCon Controllers. hope it helps!

not with this program. i did some research and it has never been done, as Vive trackers aren't supported without base stations, so there isn't any way to do it unfortunately

I need help! The wrangler installed perfectly but for some reason the server itself will not install. It tells me that it is installing "Java JRE" and doesn't install it right away like I've seen on other tutorials and then for some reason tells me that it has "timed out" and then I need to cancel the installation. Is there a way to fix this?

There are tutorials to use a PC solely for SlimeVR (can be a weaker computer) and sending the tracking data to a Quest headset. Look up "VRChat OSC SlimeVR Quest"

I gave info on setting up the joycons because there's almost no info online, but I trust that you can find info for SlimeVR in general way more easily

Check description, but here it is : 0) Calibrate your Joycons' motion sensors with a Nintendo Switch. It's in Settings -> Controllers and Sensors -> Calibrate Motion Controls 1) Download and install SlimeVR and SlimeVR Wrangler from the description of the video 2) Connect all your Joycons to your PC via bluetooth (hold down the Sync button on your Joycons until their lights turn on in a back and forth pattern and connect them to Windows like any Bluetooth device) 3) Run Wrangler and click "Search for Joycons" 3.5) If all your Joycons don't appear : close Wrangler and disconnect then reconnect them all in the Bluetooth Settings, then run Wrangler again 4) When they're picked up by Wrangler put your Joycons on your body according to what SlimeVR needs (you can read their documentation or watch tutorials) 5) In Wrangler you should see two arrows above each Joycon. Click on the arrows to rotate the Joycons : the images need to match the position of the Joycons on your body 6) Run SlimeVR Server. The trackers (here Joycons) should be picked up and shown as regular trackers. Then you just use the SlimeVR options to put each one on each part of your body accordingly 7) Run SteamVR. 8) On the SlimeVR Server, click "RESET" on top and stand straight for 5 seconds. This will calibrate your trackers according to your body automatically 9) Done! You should see your trackers when you look down at your body in VR and they should work with any game that supports it. You need 5 Joycons for Waist + Legs. With 3 you can only get Waist + Chest or Waist + bad leg tracking

With SlimeVR you need 5 trackers to get legs : 1 on your waist, 1 per ankle, and 1 per knee

To elaborate on what Cereal said, because I ran into this exact situation (even if I'm half a year late), you *could* use only 3 trackers, but leg tracking will barely work. Since SlimeVR only uses IMUs you need at least 5 trackers total, so that the actual location of each of them can be properly interpolated by the Slime Server.
